As a long time football fan and a budding designer I found this video very interesting. From a design perspective it looks like the whole process was handled sensitively and the designers did a great job with the updated club badge/crest. As a football fan, however, I understand the emotional response of the Norwich City supporters. Football clubs are not seen as brands or businesses by most fans. They are the representative of the local communities from where they emerged, and are seen as institutions with rich histories and traditions. There is certainly a debate to be had about whether the badges should ever be altered or redesigned at all, but I guess that's where the fan survey came in *rolls eyes*. It will be interesting to see whether fan opinion on the new logo shifts over time, and if the initial resistance to change dissipates. Thanks for the video, Matt. I enjoy your content on Flux too.

Great video. Really into design and logos, not a football fan. I’m from norwich myself. I think the lion caused so many issues because the original lion is based upon the two lions which stand outside city hall which are based upon the lion which is one the crest for the city of Norwich. In both the lion has its head turn so it looks towards you. Whilst I think the new lion looks modern and will be easier to reproduce online I think it’s now become just a generic lion and not a representation of the “Norwich lion”

Good background, thanks for sharing! Yeah, I've Norwich fans saying this. Just shows the importance of research.

Hi Matt, just stumbled across your channel while mindlessly scrolling. As a Norwich city fan I didn’t know if you wanted feedback on your Norwich badge design ? The castle as part of the badge outline would be a no as it would be the same as our local rivals. And the lion is from the crest of Norfolk there’s 2 lions outside city hall. I understand it was only a thing you where messing around with tho :-)

As a actual Norwich supporter and as one of the major objectors my reasoning is this point by point
To start as you seemed to like the new one the lion… the old one is actually quite close to a medieval style lion “as a very medieval city it suits the branding” the new one is a carbon copy “although changing the colour” of the British quality stamp you find on fresh eggs not a great start our original is actually closer to the England lion design but the new one looks like the sort you would find on a England shirt you would find at the market with no affiliation to the original copyrighted design
Second part the castle now the original does take a inspiration I believe more of the boundary wall in Norwich than the castle itself but the new one looks like the super Mario castle when I see the new logo “I refuse to call it our crest” I expect to see princess peach calling out for help…
Now the main part the canary yes it’s very slim for a real canary I agree but it’s a sport club do you think that a over weight canary looks better or something stream lined or aggressive look at it like a car would you rather a Lamborghini on your drive or a bulky fiat multipla ? Both are Italian but one has far more powerful looks than the other
That then brings me to the off center ball well for all those with ocd we now have a central ball but the main identity “the canary” looks like it’s not only over weight but it’sbelly is going to make it fall forward
It’s a mess simple as that I get from a designer’s perspective it was messy before but now it’s just a mess it doesn’t represent us at all and just for context that 5000 people asked about it some of them was people working for Norwich city back room staff players etc basically for a few of them they are not supporters just employees and even if it was 5000 supporters that’s not even a stadium full let alone the rest of us who was simply told “we WILL have a new logo” yes our crest might look like it was hand drawn but the new logo looks like someone with windows 95 paint shop did it in a 30min break but that only tips the iceberg of why we are so against it as a designer you will understand the cost involved it making this and many others presenting them to focus groups trademarking and copyrighting it making everything that has the old crest go away and replacing it with the new logo “not filtering it but a blitz top to bottom” all this when we are told we have no money for players to survive or a more experienced higher cost manager to guide us to survival now we are back in the championship “ok we are doing well as we normally do in the championship but…” for all that cost what did it bring to Norwich city ? More of a divide between the fans “who pay for this sort of faff” and the owners and board who have not exactly treated us as well as they have themselves just recently so yes we are angry most now have just said ok whatever now as we know we the people who keep the club going have 0 say we was represented by 3-4000 voices it a massive change and that 3-4000 was quite probably only the fans that are yes people out of those asked originally
If the image had just been cleaned up but retained its design we wouldn’t have been bothered at all but what we are left with looks cheap fat and lazy “the first thing you see looks like that…”

@@MattBruntonUK thanks and yes the shirt is a total win for me I’m not totally sold on the away for me personally keep it a classic look with the retro reissue of the home shirt and make the away white with green pin stripes then the 3rd kit “if we really need one” can be the off topic style but the home shirt is a win I just need to salvage a old crest to sow on the new shirt though 😅 I’m not bitter or petty about it as I’m shore you can tell… 😂👌🏻you didn’t mention who you support but as long as it’s not Ipswich I wish them all the luck as well 👍🏻
