I totally understand what you're saying, though you don't have to relate to music to love it... but for the record, it's fine to like the Smiths and also like Hip-Hop. I don't believe that genres are good or bad, I think you can find a good artist in almost any genre. For that reason, I try not to think about genres, just who I like and who I don't.
Charles don't you ever crave To appear on the front of the daily mail Dressed in your mothers bridal veil... They weren't miserable in the slightest, they were fucking hilarious. Not to mention the most important of the last 50 years.
Not a massive smiths fan but the Mary Anne Hobbs comments were totally out of order. I wonder what those Smiths fans would have felt about a middle class english girl being into hip hop in the 80's? newsflash no one gives a shit its just music!
I saw them at the Greek, in Berkeley, then several times in Germany. They were always great. I was actually at the Rock am Ring 3-day festival in Germany, where they were supposed to play on Sunday night, but Johnny quit that week. Never been more pissed than when promoters announced on Sunday afternoon that they had broken up. Ate mud for 3 days, waiting to see them.
@jbdean55 I'm African Canadian and you hit the nail right on the head. I couldn't have said it any better myself. That was an excellent point. Man who is this woman? I've never seen her before she doesn't know what she's talking about. I listen to hip hop and I love the Smiths one of the best bands ever to do it.
I don't understand how all these people were noticing Morrissey, "quiet, bespectacled boy at the back of the club," _at all,_ before he was, you know, Morrissey. People coming to see him out of the blue because they're worried about him... "And I heard Steven Morrissey was in the band..." - uh, what?? Nobody pays attention to nobodies _before_ they become Somebody. (As a nobody, I should know.) I smell bullshit.
Micah Newman He’d already been lead singer of two punk bands, ran a New York Dolls fanzine, sent scripts to Coronation St producers, his book about James Dean to publishers and letters to the NME. His best friend the artist Linder did Buzzcocks cover art. That’s why Tony Wilson was sat in his bedroom smirking at his ambitions - the guy who presented the tv news and co-ran Factory records. He was a face on the (tiny) scene but painfully shy and the last face anyone expected to see become a pop star. Morley and Wilson are playing up to his bedroom loner legend because they love myths as much as he did. He was industrious in that bedroom, as people who make it always are.
personally mary an hobbs i feel the smiths play to people with intelligence and a sense of humour and most of all a common ground as people relate to the smiths like myself, clearly you possess none of these.
@jbdean55 morrisey listened to rap and dance music too, you do realize it was manchester in the 80s? in the north of every country thats always happening although it sucks, rap and dance music
People throwing fits, haha. If you so much can't bear the fact that someone doesn't like your favourite band, maybe it's time to consider your own openness in music and taste. Hobbs (they even misspelled her name) has been a music journalist since the early 80s. She's allowed to not have liked every single band that came out since, just as you all are. If you didn't pick up on the tongue-in-cheekness of her statements, I believe you were just looking for something to get upset about.
It's not that people are mad she doesn't like band, it's because her statements and analysis of their background is just so completely inaccurate and unfounded. Flat out wrong and improvised. She's really doesn't have a clue and I doubt she'd listen to much of them, thus her "journalistic opinion" is completely ignorant of credible context or insight.
Marr: You're gettin' down with your bad self then WHOA, a tulip!"
fkn hilarious!

Nothing before or since can hold a candle to The Smiths - perfection personified
So true. Only other band to float my boat is The Cure. But not to same degree.
I saw them at the Greek, in Berkeley, then several times in Germany. They were always great.

what a great band i dont give a fuck what anyone says thanks for the great music
First I only liked the riffs. Now I think the lyrics are the best parts, they're so true and funny.
Mary Anne Hobbs has changed her fucking tune.
I remember this series. They did the whole of the 90s too so you ended up with a program called I love 1999 which was broadcast in 2001...
The women either hold him in utter contempt and jealousy, or think he's the most beautiful thing they've ever seen.

The dude's right... Anyone who ever says that Morrissey is sad has just shown that they have an asymmetrical head and their brain bounces to and fro

Lolollollol they way they ragged on bespectacled young Steven. Thankfully he believed in himself and so did Johnny.
So what was with the hearing aid and national health glasses?
I love the video discription.

Johnny looks terrible here.
Lol @ Mary pretending to know about music.
I find it odd, that no one every suggests Morrissey has Asperger's. To me, its so obvious! Hence the perceived corks, and the genius!
@jbdean55 Bringing Social class into music is lame.
