One of the most debilitating chronic issues that a jiu-jitsu practitioner, especially a competitor, can have is back pain due to an injury or injuries. In this video, I share some background on my personal experience with back pain, what led to it in training, and then we pitch it over to Dr Carlos with BJJ Physio for more info on avoiding and fixing this condition.
HUGE shoutout to BJJ Physio for doing these collaborations & to MUSA Visual Media for the amazing filming and editing. Stay tuned for more of these collaborations over the next few weeks! The link for the medical breakdown of this rolling kimura is at the end of this video.

Unfortunately, when you do bulge a disc in BJJ it sucks! Been 10 months post acute injury. Hardest thing I’ve ever dealt with. Couldn’t sit, stand or walk for months. But I’m 2 months back training and managing the pain and progressing everyday! Protect your spine, you only get one!

Hey Chad. I got something similar going. Luckily got hurt outside of BJJ. What has helped you recover? I feel like I’m progressing slow as hell! I’m on 3.5 months.

I badly bulged a disc 19 years ago and for me my ball room days were over to be brutally honest. I can still train but I am acutely aware of my limitations and what will aggregate things. I really listen to my body now where when I was young I would try to train through pain.

Had a extrusion L5 & S1 10 years ago ,managed to keep active with taekwondo and muay thai over the years but recently decided re-start training BJJ.
After 2 sessions of BJJ felt a bit of more severe pain more than normal or similar to the one I had 10 years ago.
Could i still train but without grappling sessions or less grappling sessions than normal?
