  • For centuries women in Africa and the Middle East have used this music to cure pain in times of stress or illness. Followers of the Zar cult believe that sometimes their illnesses are caused by "red spirits" - the Zar - who use human bodies as hosts. These spirits attract attention to themselves by making their hosts sick. Only after acknowledging a spirit's presence and meeting its demands can a woman hope to attain a symbiotic relationship with her possessor --- and she discovers the identity of this intruder through a dance-induced trance.
For more information about the Zar and trance dancing in general please read the book "Trance Dancing with the Jinn" by Yasmin Henkesh. Music from Sands of Time: The Zar (www.serpentine.org) and Rapture Rumi by Steven Flynn (www.stevenflynnmusic.com) ©1995 Wild Child Music BMI. There are 3 albums of Zar music available by Awlad Abou al-Ghreit from Sands of Time Music.
Correction: Neanderthal bone flute is from Slovenia - • Neanderthal Bone Flute... - NOT Serbia.

ZAR - Overstand this is an African tradition and dance and culture have always been a mechanism for healing, expression and communion with the Divine and Ancestors etc. Yes some form of it is found in every indigenous culture...for instance...Native Hoop Dance...very similar...etc. Had nothing to do with not being able to get to a "medcial person" Heal Thyself!

Fascinating. I just heard of Zar in this month's Conde-Nast Traveler (article on Cairo). Rich, heady stuff. Therapeutic, too. More, please!

You are absolutely right. I wrote Slovenia in the original script and accidentally said Serbia as I did the voice over. My apologies. I put a link to a film about the discovery in the description.

Most researchers and the Egyptians themselves believe the word zar either comes from the Arabic root "to Visit" or the Amharic language name that migrated with the ritual from Ethiopia to the Sudan and then into Egypt when Mohammed Ali invaded the country in 1820.

@shtookatz Well, women are/were considered very powerful in some cultures. in some cultures, it is still the practice to separate the women during their menses, for reasons of cleanliness, and the idea that she has too much power at that time. In this day and age, it is the unfortunate belief that women are considered weak and chattel... and some women believe it.

I've read about the Zar, and the sufferers generally go the medical doctors when possible before they go to the Zar cult. Or at least that's how it was in the Sudanese village that Janice Boddy did her fieldwork in the 1970s.

I've been studying this, and I think that women are more suceptable to spirit possession because they generally have less power and prestige in society, and they have to repress their emotions more.

Great documentary! Correction though: The world's oldest flute (to my knowledge) was found a couple of years ago in 2006 in Southern Germany: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hohle_Fels and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paleolithic_flutes I went to the cave where it was found and to the museum, where the flutes are shwon, and exapmples of how beautiful they sounded, can be heard. Very recommendable!

Interesting, but why is it always the women who get into these kinds of crazy superstitious things? We have the same kind of thing in Southern Italy with the tarantata

Of course Egypt is part of Africa! But from pharaonic times forward their history has been very different from that of sub-Saharan Africa. The spread of Islam did not occur as early in those countries as it did in the north around the Mediterranean Sea. Nor did the deep south experience such a large influx of foreigners from the spice trade and various conquests (Ottoman in particular). Egypt's history is more closely aligned to the Middle East than it is to Africa below the desert.
