That frequency splitter is a game changer. Looking forward to utilizing this in my workflow with 808 distortion, and playing around with melodies. Excellent tutorial as always. Keep up the good work!
I always distort the 808s in parallel, send the original and blend the distorted to a bus channel where I EQ it. A 60Hz boost and 200-300 Hz cut with a low cut at 25Hz. This pretty much makes for a solid 808. It’s much easier though if you start out with a good 808 sample that properly balanced.
Really appreciate the editing/meme efforts on this one ! Made it really entertaining and informative at the same time. Keep up the good work of explaining in detail, it helps making people smarter (I hope).
quick tip: if you do sounddesign you can do multiple layer for your sub and basses. i always use at least a highend, midrange, bass and sub. you can now distort any layer as much as you want without huting the other frequencies BUT BE AWARE there might be some polarity problems if you don't take care well of your mix and sounddesign
I have been watching this channel for like a year or two and i will say navie d is one of the best youtube producer out there with great teaching techniques and super useful videos
This was an inspiration! I spent the afternoon setting up a freq splitter and playing with different distortions and other effects separately on higher frequencies vs lower freq. Much fun!
You can manipulate each frequency band individually in maximus as well but in some cases it's definitely more beneficial to do it in parallel or manually as you demonstrated
Very informative as always, fav beatmaking tutorials on RUclips ! ♥️ I have watched all your videos, many of them several times, and i was wondering if you could do a sdetailed video about mixing Boom Bap Beats, newschoold or oldschool! I feel like a specific video on this topic (eqing the sample, the drums, etc) would be extremely useful! Keep it up ♥️
I use Camel Crusher, mainly the British Clean preset, my 808s always slap🔥. The 808 punches without the high end distortion sound, and the compressor if you turn it up will bring the high end distortion out.
IMO Sosig always sounds best at about 3-8% as a slightly gritty gain boost... making the sosig too angry tends to muck things up a bit. Good looking out Navie.
Love you navie have to point out a few errors. Distortion on 808s is what makes good 808s, an 808 itself is a distorted sine wave. I think this video only applies to a very select few sub genres of trap beats so for musicians looking at all genres this is bad advice. Distortion makes everything better if you learn how to use it. Never avoid anything in beat making, even mistiming something can make a song better
The point I was making is that distorting a sin wave, and moving it away from a perfect sin shape, has an effect on how much low end it generates. And that people should be aware of this.
@@NavieD Video was good overall bro, I have just been making a lot of house music recently and I have been noticing the difference in the way 808s are used. In trap sub bass is the main goal with 808s, where as trap music is more driven by moog style sub bass. Learned a lot from you over the years and I have massive respect for you, apologies if it came across snarky
Navie, I would recommend someone on here rent an actually TR808 and sample the sounds You’ll notice the 808 is out of tune A cool trick is to use melodyne to fine tune them by key and use them that way
if you bring in a seperate kick and stick to one pitch wouldnt that introduce some phase issues or conflicting pitches? if not what do you tune the kick to?
What if I want my 808 to be felt in the 400hz(300hz maybe) to 6000hz range? I was watching some mixing tutorials and the speaker said most audio devices output that range most significantly, not all speakers and headphones of course, but I have been trying to keep that in mind. I still have more tutorials to watch from him but recently I have been trying to make my 808s higher frequency. Any advice?
Its your decision if you want to have your 808 distorted or clean. Just keep in mind that distorted 808 take more space in the spectrum than the clean one. For example if the beat is busy and has a lot of melodic instrumentation i would use clean 808. If the beat is minimal and you need to fill the empty spaces i would use distorted ones. At the end it depends on your taste and style:)
One of your best vids so far in terms of editing. Very informative and entertaining at the same time ! Thanks
Thanks Sammy

If you dont have a frequency splitter just double the track. Roll the highs off the one, add distortion to the other and season to taste. 😙👌
