- Scraping the antifouling off our Maxi 84 sailing boat is one job I will NEVER do again... but it was handy to try out different paint scrapers, and there was definitely one clear winner from our mammoth 3-day effort.
If 15 minutes of watching paint being scraped is too much (sorry) you can read the article at: bit.ly/3QLuEMm
V-Tuff Cobra scraper hooks up to a vacuum too 👍
I would try pressure washer sandblasting kit for that job. Easy work, no dust and surface ready for epoxy.
After scraping my boat, had to sand it back to the laminate... You think scraping is bad, the sanding is torture! Worth it though, I'll soon be putting a west system 422 epoxy barrier on. Well done on a gruelling job guys🙌🏻
Can we get bottom scraping robots to do it?
What about the waterline?
Looks as if lateral scrapes would be better on convex areas and horizontal might avoid the deep gouges the concave.
PS. You probably shouldn't admit on your CV, to having done a bit of stripping.
Maybe a full integrated mask and goggles?
You never considered using paint strippers? I've seen demonstrations in videos where it looks like you could do the entire hull in a few hours of light work.
We were advised not too on this particular job, but yes that is an option (still have to scrape and leave on overnight, then apply another lot to get rid of the primer, which we needed to do because starting with new antifoul, which would have been incompatible) - there's some more info on paint-strippers in this article - bit.ly/3HMxiNL
Should add that this was very thick antifouling - from many seasons' applications.
Why aren't you using a random orbital sander?
if you were local to dorset, i would have helped!
