Saw Allan sing this several times during Hollies concerts. In the live theatre performance they had a back cloth with flashes of light and smoke to simulate a battle field, and it was fantastic with the sound of cannons etc. Brilliant emotive performance from the wonderful Allan Clarke.
Thank you for posting this--I never heard it. SO beautifully haunting; I am surprised it never charted in the US. Then again maybe I'm not--growing up in the 1980's as a teen, the airwaves were dominated by Michael Jackson. Still, I am thrilled to hear it now and appreciate Allan Clarke's vocals even more with age.
Saw Allan singing this live in several concerts. They did it with back projection of canons thundering and smoke to simulate the battlefield, it sounded and looked fantastic! Still one of my favourite Hollies songs. Strange to think it came from the pen of a man who created the Wombles!
Written by Mike Batt, probably about the Napoleonic wars, but this magnificent song is still relevant today, as the tragic events in Ukraine demonstrate.
They wouldn't have gotten me. I'd be alive and well up the hill pegging my rape rock collection at their beans! LoL. Great live version of this song! Such a powerful yet sweet voice, excellent harmonizing. I've liked these guys a long time. Thanks, man, I subbed your channel.
Incredible, wonderful, song and ALLAN CLARKE, telling the tragic tale.
How can you not love the Hollies?

Wunderschöner Song mit tollem Text (auch heute noch aktuell). Leider hört man diese Perle selten. Ich habe manchmal Tränen in den Augen.
Fabulous!! The Hollies were live the same they sounded on records!

This is from a UK show called "Starburst", broadcast 22nd October 1980 (probably their last UK TV appearance to feature Terry & Bernie!).
Beautiful song and sang so well. Thank you, Anthony!
Thank you Anthony for sharing this gem. It's brillant!
As good as the original- a tribute both to the Hollies arrangement and Mike Batt's creative genius- arguably Britain's greatest living composer
One of my favs. Thank you for posting this, Anthony.
Brilliant vocals

This was big in Germany back then - goes to show how countries' tastes differ.

It's about a one night stand
