    Kraftwerk ride high
German godfathers of electronica peddle their way into the people of Manchester's hearts
03 July 2009 - Kraftwerk wheeled out some surprises during their unique performance at the Manchester Velodrome last night (2 July), which saw the British Olympic cycling team ride round the venue whilst the band played.
The German pioneers of electronica are well known for their love of cycling so the Velodrome was a fitting venue.
However, it was a couple of minutes into the song Tour De France, that the names of the Olympic Gold-winning cycling team were announced from the stage with a thick German accent.
Each member proceeded to appear from behind the band and cycle round the purpose built track, much to the delight of the crowd.
The cyclists rode up and down in a wave-like formation, an image then mirrored by elaborate visual effects on screens behind the stage.
Most of the audience agreed this was the highlight of the show.
"I think I died and went to heaven when the cyclists came out for Tour De France. Thats the best track and action I've ever seen working together - it's my gig of the year," said one enthusiastic fan.
Another added: "It was absolutely fantastic, seeing the Olympic team cycle round the track was amazing and it gave the music so much energy."
Kraftwerk played a two hour show altogether. The first half saw them romp through the best-known songs from their back catalogue.
Trans Europe Express, Man Machine, Computer Love, The Model and Autobahn were particularly well received by the crowd.
But the treats didn't end there. For part two, the band emerged from behind a light show, dressed in luminous green outfits set against a backdrop of 3D visuals that required the audience to wear special glasses.
The lyrics of tracks including Radioactivity and Computer World were then thrown out at a Velodrome full of 3D spec wearers in futuristic style.
It made for an impressive encore and at the end of the set, as deadpan as ever, each of the current four members of the Kraftwerk line-up left the stage one by one.

"Kraftwerk is a European band, with German passports- and we're touring the world."
That's a very good answer, in just a few words. I guess Mr. Huetter has that ability to put a lot of meaning in a few words, the way Kraftwerk has the ability to put a lot of emotion into synth pulses and a drum-machine beat.

Actually the robot/mannequin thing came about when a German music magazine wrote about the stage performances by Kraftwerk and said their movements were sparse like the emotions of a schaufensterpuppe/mannequin. This inspired them to write Schaufensterpuppe and then to elaborate on it with We are The Robots, The Model etc and finally it turned into an half-ironic stage concept.

      Incorrect.

@tn800 Hi there, I guess, with "Zero-Situation" he refers to something, he said in an interview with Rock & Folk Magazine back in 1976: "The living culture of Central Europe was cut in the '30s, and all the intellectuals went to the U.S. or to France, or they were eliminated. We take back that culture of the '30s at the point where it was left, and this on a spiritual level..."

Yeah, in German, as you may know, it'd be nearer "Krafft-vairk" (as in "air") but I don't think the band would ever expect Brits to pronunce it like that. The Germans pronounce Jaguar (as in the cars) "Yag-yoo-ar".

Miranda Sawyer is pretty good at breaking it all down and sorting things, and she's been behind many scenes for over twenty years, excellent journalism, she doesn't need to brag about it is all. Believe it or not not everyone wants to be Piers Morgan.

@tudgefunnel there were a bit more people who contributed to progress of modern music. You heard about Concrete Music movement? They were using oscillators and samples in 50s as well. But wait, electric guitar wasn't first electric instrument too, before that existed already few electric instruments. One good example is Theremin invented in 20s in USSR.

Found this interesting with one minor flaw. Gary numan wasnt influenced by kraftwerk. He said himself he was more influenced by uktravox with Jon Foxx and others if the post punk era.

They look more like Fatwerk now. Sheer awesomeness from the early days of the music revolution (no not that 60's hippie crap, the real one from the 70's/80's techno/punk/new wave movement). The influences from those days are still all over the radio right now.
