@@SwedeRacerDCThey are the only surviving members of the order Xiphosura and you can only trace back their commonalities to other animals in the animal kingdom species tree back to the phylum Arthropoda, which you can subdivide into Insects, Crustaceans, Arachnids, and Chelicerata (which horseshoe crabs are a part of). So they are only similar to those animals in that they are athropods and we can't get any more specific than that in our description. I don't think there is a creature type as generic as "arthropod." I play Insect tribal and there's so many cool Spider cards I wanna play. Living Hive was changed from Elemental to Elemental Insect so idk why they can't just... change the name of a creature type that already has a lot of mixed support though...
@HanayomeK my thought on it would be at least if they can group land faring arthropods together, it's should be distinct enough from the water arthropods that no one's really going to argue that much. The issue ultimately comes down to the fact that it's actually just wrong, it's like making a fox card and giving it the cat type when foxes are actually grouped in with dogs. Better yet, why not just separate the arthropods into their proper groups (insect, arachnid, myriapode, crab, lobster), then use arthropod as a batching term, á la Historic? That would make for better visual design and allow some design space for synergistic abilities and spells. Otherwise, if they're going to make non-insect arthropods insects, then they can make crabs and lobsters (homarids by association, too) into insects without issue.
This video is really the highlight of my day. It's insane how this video is engaging even though it should be boring. Well done. One point of critique: The caterpillars and stuff that you signed off on actually didn't have the three pairs of rudimentary legs that are supposed to be attached to the abdomen. I think most of those actually should not count. Pretty sure the token of the clothed insect with the horse only had 4 limbs too.
You may very well be correct about the caterpillars, I found it hard to judge at times. Though that bee person I think is Xira's kid, so I'm willing to let that one slide
2:27 This one is actually Chinese! You probably found it on Scryfall, and it actually shows that it's Simplified Chinese there. Most cards under the "regional variant" art tag were alt-art censorship versions specifically for Mainland China from 5th to 8th edition, purely because of a old longtime rumor which went "morbid graphics (skeleton, gore, body horror, etc.) would 100% gets a game banned". For example, World of Warcraft had to replace ALL in-game BONES ON THE GROUND with placeholder cubes. 😂 While the truth is that there have been precisely zero laws/regulations about this. It's at best a rumor of some high official's personal opinion. But one rumor from the "high castle" alone was enough to deter everyone nationwide for a decade, because boy, who would have believed that a well-oiled communist society could be corrupted to the max??
To me, Spinal Parasite looks like it could be a wingless wasp. There are parasitic wasps with large stingers like that, and a few species of wingless wasps, so I’d put it there. Also fireflies are beetles.
@RedBobcatGames I think the insect categorization is getting to you Mr Red Bobcat, you should sit down for a second. Now tell me, am I holding up 6 legs or 8?
These days we tend to prefer taxonomy based on evolutionary relationship, so things that convergently evolve to look and behave like insects wouldn't class as insects. Thus there can only be "insects" on one plane, unless there has been an insect planeswalker spreading insects to other worlds. Those mantis ants could theoretically be insects if the mantis arm things weren't legs. For example, if they're mandibles that have evolved articulation. According to The School, wasps would actually be ants, not bees - ants are more closely related. Bond Beetle appears to have two heads, so can't be an insect. Brain Weevil looks to have 8 legs? There's a bee amongst the tokens that appears to bee a man in a costume.
Oh my god! I didn't even see that second head on Bond Beetle! Plus I can't believe I missed that weevil. You're right! Though I think that bee is just Xira's kid, which I guess makes it count?
As a bugologist, a lot of these criteria and comments hit me like a rock and I could never accurately predict where the frain of logic was going so..great job? Lol
I wanted to speak up for Twigwalker, but I don't use even use mine. That last insect, the detective, it had 6 limbs! I think that means it's technically a pass.
Every time you said "insect that happens to be an artifact" I kept wondering what you could mean, but judging by your condemnation of Krenko's Buzzcutter, I gather you are positing that a fully organic mommy beetle and daddy beetle somehow hatched a baby that was a fully functional toolbox with robotic legs.
Like I guess. Or perhaps some sort of non-carbon based organism? WotC don't exactly care to explain either, but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt where I could
I love your pronunciation of Chitinous. Perfect! I think of Skyrim and those giant bug creatures from the Dwarven Mines and such. Those things also have a Chitinous shell based on what you can harvest from them.
@RedBobcatGames This is one of those words that I really don't care about if people get it right. I am not 100% sure, but I think there are a couple acceptable pronunciations and one may be more US based and the other more based on the Queen's English. I would easily accept that the first syllable sounds like Chit as in chit chat or Chitty Chitty bang bang. Or the Ch could sound more like a K and that first syllable sound more like Kite. I'm a pronunciation nerd, and I like when people either at least give it an honest try with an educated guess and maintain consistency or when they intentionally and sarcastically joke about it. When people just know it's hard and say something very off is where it starts to be a pet peeve lol. Like when people say Chip-Pull-Tay for Chipotle... But for this word, you could've said Charizard or Cinnabon or made a joke about how you think these are the weird dessert things that taco bell sells...(Cinna Twists or something like that). It gave me a good laugh to hear your approach of starting to sound it out and being like, nah that's a death sentence
I am Shocked and Appalled that many of the Fallout set insects were not included in this list. The Wise Mothman is disappointed at being left off the table.
4:05 No, they don't say that. Ants, beetles, earwigs, dragonflies, butterflies and bees are insect types. There was no mention that these are all of the insect types that exist, just that they are insect types. And I though yugioh players are bad at reading comprehension. Fun fact: moths ARE butterflies.
True, but I think by looking Grist is a Larva only in the sense that the next stage of life for Grist is being the head of a swarm. I may be wrong, but those look like centipedes to me
Chitinous means having a shell of chitin, much like if we were define as boneus for having a skeleton made of bone or keratinous for having a skin made of keratinized cells :3
Also caterpillars have way more than 6 legs (most of them don't really count as true legs) but do count because they are the larval form of butterflies which do only have 6 legs, so larval grist can still count as long as true grist fits
“Are all types of insects” does not mean what you think it means. That simply means all of the previously listed options are in fact insects. It is not claiming those constitute the entirety of the insect grouping. ‘Are all the types of insects’ would convey the sentiment your video assumes. I’m unsure if this misreading was intentional or not but I figured I’d point it out. I took over eight years of grammar mechanics for a reason, right?
I wouldn't say that WotC was "lying" about the insect creature type. More like they made a generic assumption and left it alone. The assumption being that terrestrial (or land dwelling) arthropods are all insects, even though some, like Millipedes and Centipedes, clearly are not insects. However, if they had used "Arthropod" as a creature type instead of "Insect", then it would have overlapped with the "Crab", "Spider", and "Lobster" types, since all are kinds of Arthropods, so it would've been far too vague to be valid. With that logic, I personally don't see the problem with centipedes/millipedes being classified under the "insect" creature type even though they aren't actually insects. I also don't have an issue with insects being depicted with extra limbs since the game, story, lore of Magic takes place on worlds other than Earth, so these insect-like creatures, or "insectoids", could have evolved with extra appendages when compared to Earth-borne life. I can also see an argument to have the various kinds of insects/terrestrial arthropods to be given their own creature types to clean up the confusion.
Well I think if Mites and Spiders can be there own thing, Centipedes could be too. Thinsg like "Pest" are also a creature type if they wanted to simplify it
@RedBobcatGames I do see where you are coming from, I just think "Pest" is also too vague of a term as almost anything can be considered a pest by human society while also being derisive in nature. Spiders, Insects, Rats, or any invasive plant or animal species can all be considered pests of some kind.
I like how you use a strange website as the all encompassing definition of insect categories. Seriously, I appreciate the sarcasm. I will say that Devouring swarm appears to be a beetle, and not an ant. Locusts are like Grasshoppers, but was that one of the categories? I don't remember. If not, it should have been. But mostly, I agree with your approach to categorize these and exoose the lies of WotC
I’m relieved you’re not applying this research to Yu-Gi-Oh! artwork for cards; their consistency on types matching art boxes is VERY loose in some cases

Bee token at 22:57 only has four limbs (I think). Should not be an insect.
I dunno. I think it's Xira's kid, so I'm counting it
whoa whoa whoa.. skittering cicada not being grouped with locusts... grasshopper is it's own brand on the tree.
Taking a step back from the mess I made, honestly I think we're lucky I didn't group them with bees
bro just continues to be the mtg CC goat. I dunno why but I enjoy your stuff way more than any1 else
That's really kind, nice to hear. Thank you
In the defense of beetles being categorized the average sapient organism is a beetle. Theres a LOT of beetles
And Ringo is the best of them
The temptation to infodump my bug knowledge is strong, but I know it's not in the spirit of the videos bit, so I must refrain
If you did I'd have no right to complain after this
These days we tend to prefer taxonomy based on evolutionary relationship, so things that convergently evolve to look and behave like insects wouldn't class as insects.
It would actually be a bit more accurate to say that ants and bees are types of wasps.
@@masalanicholoff3593 True, but wasps aren't a valid category according to The School.
As a bugologist, a lot of these criteria and comments hit me like a rock and I could never accurately predict where the frain of logic was going so..great job? Lol
You are welcome I think!
I wanted to speak up for Twigwalker, but I don't use even use mine.
That last insect, the detective, it had 6 limbs! I think that means it's technically a pass.
Only one body part though, but I could be swayed either way
Chitin is a word I had read a whole bunch before learning how to pronounce. I had, of course, been pronouncing it wrong in my head for years. :)
I'm in the exact same position!
Saying that word has been tripping me up in games like that for a LONG time
@RedBobcatGames This is one of those words that I really don't care about if people get it right.
I might start using Charizard as a stand in now haha
I am Shocked and Appalled that many of the Fallout set insects were not included in this list. The Wise Mothman is disappointed at being left off the table.
I skipped all Universe Beyond cards, because I couldn't be sure if WotC would be to blame if they're wrong or not
@ understandable, this is after all a video about their mistakes not those of other companies
I would argue that Giant Caterpillar is not an insect bc it appears to only have 4 legs
Maybe those things coming out of its mouth are legs?
Now that's the MTG investigation worth my time.
You are welcome!
This is a beautiful monument to horrifying entomology
And one I'm very proud of
Not in today's video: reading comprehension
Not in most honestly lol
Well, technically they are all fish
I'm ready to hear this out...
No California law accepts this
No, you’re thinking of beavers.
@@masalanicholoff3593 California law classifies bees as seafood
@@wgault98 I know, I was making a joke about how the Catholic church classifies beaver and other aquatic mammals as fish and not meat.
Isn't Grist in their larval stage in the Voracious Larva cards? Perhaps they have prolegs.
Maybe, but I don't think grist actually changes. Just like, becomes part of a swarm. Plus, if those are prolegs then I can't see any real ones
22:58 wait a minute, that's not a bee........... Is Bobcat lying to us?
See, I think that's Xira's kid. So I guess counts?
I smell a class action lawsuit for their dishonesty
Get Legal Eagle on it!
I love getting ragebaited into a biology lesson
You're welcome!
It's the best way honestly
@RedBobcatGames I agree lol it was a pleasant surprise
Correct me if im wrong, but i think Wasps count as ants
You've seen the videos I make. I'd never dare correct anyone
I've learned so much today about insects
You're welcome!
I like all of the Red bobcat's videos
Thank you
"Are all types of insects" not "are all the types of insects"
Oh wait, it's a bit
A bit? On my channel? I'd never stoop so low!
The inability of most people to pronounce anything beyond 3rd grade words is astonishing to me. There's even a card called Chitinous Cloak!
Why would someone make a clock out of that?
😂 I watched the whole video to the end and got it!!!
Very clever and funny!!!
Well done @redbobcat!
Thank you
Ace video, which I will also be bookmarking as an example of semantic satiation.
You're welcome?
@RedBobcatGames It's a great video! The Tokens section just goes particularly hard!
Ow you got me there, dude; I thought you'd be talking about the Reserved List.
Oh man, don't even get me started
4:05 No, they don't say that. Ants, beetles, earwigs, dragonflies, butterflies and bees are insect types. There was no mention that these are all of the insect types that exist, just that they are insect types. And I though yugioh players are bad at reading comprehension.
Fun fact: moths ARE butterflies.
That is a fun fact!
Excellent clickbait, I respect it
Thank you, thank you
Technically not clickbait I've been raging about creature types since I got in this game. In my eyes this is valid and I need more of it
Technically correct. The best kind of correct
You can tell locusts are actually mammals by their human faces.
This has conjured some real nightmare images for me. Thank you
Isn't a Larva just a baby form of an insect? I think it's fine to make Grist an insect.
Meaning the artifact ants would not count with the Wikipedia definition, but that point of contention has long standed in the field of entomology
I've never heard the word "boneus" before. I may now use it every day
Some insects have pseudopods, which look like extra legs but don't count. Idk if thats relevant.
Is that different from prolegs? Cos I do talk about that in the vid
Yay caterpillars!
So, when do we get the birds redemption video where every bird is truly a bird and you can prove it?
I honestly have no idea haha. Let it stew in my brain for a bit
That was an incredibly satisfying video; take my money.
I like to mix it up and try to create a bit of something for everyone. Glad you enjoyed
22:56 That "bee" seems to have only 4 limbs and no stinger, so I wouldn't count it as an insect.
Yeah, but I think it's Xira's kid, so I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt
@RedBobcatGames someone doesn't want on Xira's bad side this is definitely a hill worth dying on
Did we just get Cool Bug Fact's?
Depends. Does that bug have 6 legs and 3 body segments?
Is Grist not a catterpillar, therefore a butterfly, therefore an insect? Her prolegs might just be spiky.
Well my issue there is I don't see any non-prolegs. But, I'm happy to be wrong about it
I'm pretty sure the school run was saying they were all examples of insects not that all insects were one of those examples.
Also caterpillars have way more than 6 legs (most of them don't really count as true legs) but do count because they are the larval form of butterflies which do only have 6 legs, so larval grist can still count as long as true grist fits
lol, just got to the end, ignore everything above, except the grist disagreement
Haha, fair. Though I'm still not sold on Grist
Well I appriciate it, thank you
I clicked on the title fully expecting another "man yelling at clouds" rant, really excited. Kinda disappointed but this was nice too
Oh I've got plenty of those in me too I suspect
THEY CAN’T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH IT!
It's shocking really. Enough is enough!
21:55 fun fact, some mosquitoes are also pollinators
THEY ARE BEES!
The female mosquitoes ones drink blood to make babies . Yes, our blood. Moths and butterflys also pollinate.
@RedBobcatGamesWasps are just fly ants. Spiders are not insects.
This is the controversy I live for
Then you're welcome!
Mantis-es are ants obviously. Ants in the name after all.
Oh my god HOW DID I MISS THIS!?
Illuminating Detective, IDK maybe we can count it, I count 6 pointy parts. Even if 5 of them are on one side.
When you put it like that...
Thank you!
I clicked for a hot take against wotc and instead encountered an entomology lesson.
You're welcome?
"KY-TIN-US"
Thank you!
You're that one guy with the tatoo that says "shrimp is bug" aren't you?
My legs are hairier
Entomologists hate him.
I feel clickbaited into an autistic rant. Splendid.
Glad you enjoyed!
What do you have against centipedes, milapedes, rollie pullies?
They're liars too. Millipedes don't have a million legs!
I’m relieved you’re not applying this research to Yu-Gi-Oh! artwork for cards; their consistency on types matching art boxes is VERY loose in some cases
If ever I'm in the position, I'll come for Yu-gi-oh next haha
Not to be that person but the counterpart to army ants is the Chinese counterpart not the Japanese
God damn it, every time. I don't do this on purpose. I'm sorry
So wait... what is Jeff Goldblum then?
A Moth
He’s The Fly!
