- At Superbooth 2024, we met up with Sebastien from Arturia unveiled the new flagship polyphonic analog synth, the Polybrute 12*. With 12 voices and a new MPE-capable polyphonic aftertouch keybed designed specifically by *Arturia*, the *Polybrute 12 *is noticably larger than the original, and is a major upgrade offering an enhanced range of sound and modulation possibilities. Sebastian emphasized the expressive nature of the instrument, demonstrating the *Full Touch mode which senses the key travel from the top to the bottom of the keypress. Original *Polybrut*e features like morphing between patches and the Morphe XYZ controller and the lovely wooden ribbon controller are all present and correct. The Arturia-built Keybed must be the standout feature, however, bringing extreme expressivity to your playing.
The Polybrute 12's enhanced capabilities over the original Polybrute include larger unisons, ideal for creating layered soundscapes, and innovative touch envelope modes that allow for dynamic and precise control over each note.

Arturia's Poly12 on designing the new keybed: "it's harder than you think". So glad you spent so much time on this! Very few keyboards get this just right. I'm a solo pianist, getting a synth keybed with a level of expression that lets me explore my skill at touch is very rare! I gave away three keyboards this year because they were so uncontrollable. One was so slow to return a key to the top position it was impossible to play fast. One the velocity was impossible to control; had to turn off velocity. One had a sustain pedal impossible to control.
So have you tried this one yet? Or you just feel this is more likely to be what you're searching for? I imagine how challenging it could be for a musician with well established technique to adapt to such quite different instrument. Or maybe are you planning to try PolyBrute 12 in near future? Really interested to hear about your impression after you try playing it.
This approach to aftertouch seems very intuitive, if they bring this to some premium MIDI controllers they can become quite popular.

Looks like Arturia has created a massive synth that will grow with its owner.. hopefully they will apply this new keybed to their next gen of keyboard controllers.
I looks almost pastel pink with the reflection from the huge video screen and the camera, white balance.the sound, well, this guy makes it sound very musical.
Love the sound and look of this (probably a Marmite issue, but I think the colour looks stunning). I particularly like the way they've done the poly-touch, although the Osmose does different and perhaps more articulation, I really like that this has a more regular-feel keybed. This one's very special.
This thing is a beast. I think to get the best out of it you need to be a player. Great presenter as well. He really knows his stuff and is not at all phased by questions.

It's _convection_ - the Bernoulli effect is what makes wings fly. However, let's stick with it since it sounds cool, and this synth can fly high! :-))

Got to like this guy's real enthusiasm and modesty in presenting this synth so well.
It sounds great and a very good demo. I bought my b-stock, open box, fully new, never unpacked, PolyBrute for 1665 Euros, two years ago. I’m not convinced I’m ready to spend more than double that for 6 more voices and the new keyboard, however good it is. Hopefully the price will go down over time…

It would be very interesting to trigger small arps and fills that start from a specific key as you play based on the key pressure. All kinds of ideas. It might be something you could set up in Bitwig say. Such a great synth. Very cool.

I have been waiting to hear from Sebastien on this release. He is my through line for years on Arturia's releases. He has a gentle, intelligent way of explaining the products while communicating his enthusiasm. The synth is, of course, very impressive. More companies should make such efforts to build expressive interfaces for playing synthesizers rather than leaving that job to others. We now have a few examples, but there really should be more. Bravo to Arturia for doing this. One hopes this technology makes its way into more-affordable products than a $4K brute. However great it is, it isn't going to be in my budget any time soon. Now that Arturia has made this investment in deep expressivity, the benefits should be allowed to enrich the whole line (and maybe we have seen the beginning of that in the 'freak synths).
Yes he is a great presenter. Very engaging as a person. It's like having a real person with real enthusiasm showing you an interesting musical instrument, not just a product.

I’ve not been fond myself of the polybrute sound, but that is a personal taste. However, I will be curious to Arturia’s next MIDI controller, having this incredible touch-envelope keybed, a display for each knob, a built in sequencer ánd easy on the spot layering between different destinations.
Having owned the polybrute for around 2 years, I find it hard to imagine anyone not liking it’s sound. Each to their own..

What about the sound do you not like? I mean compared maybe to some other named keybords. It sounds great to me here but it's just one sweet spot. Some of thecother denos, I wasn't so keen on some of the sounds, so for me it depends on the programmmer and player.

@@davebellamy4867 it is a wonderful synth. It's very expressive. It can sound very organic and it can also sound very digital when using the brute factor and metalizer. The matrix is amazing for creating modular style stuff and the Morph is genius for finding new sounds in-between 2 patches. The FX are beautiful.

This synth is on my list and will be most likely under the Christmas tree this year. It has been compared to the Yamaha CS80 and this comparison is rightful.
Arturia, can we please have the Keybed 49 Pro MIDI controller based on the PB12? We'll forgive you for the odious Astrloab.

I never felt the Arturia 'brute sound lend itself well for polyphonic play, maybe it's the Steiner Parker filter.
Looks and sounds fantastic but I imagine I'd never use more than 10% of its capabilities!

Looks scrumptious, would prefer a more affordable desktop version which is rack mountable though personally.
With 12 very fully featured voices I fear the keyboard is the smallest part of the components!

Still some rack dudes out there :) Back in the 1990s racking synths was a common feature, a keyboard and a rack version. I had two large racks full of them. Those days are gone.

Yeh , a bit of a rant....Besides the obvious.. CS-80, a true behemoth with poly aftertouch..... Its incredible to think , the only manufacturer that had Poly Aftertouch was Ensoniq.. From the SQ80 (1987) , across most its range, for decades.... Then , Creative labs bought it , just to let it go into oblivion , Just for Ensoniqs IP, re how they implemented Sound Cards using PCI... (Creative , Get Stuffed)

Good to see Arturia expanded on the use... I love the osmosis with its x/y/z MPE.. But you need to adapt your playing style...

Ensoniq had poly AT from 87 until they were purchased by CL in the late 90's.
Plus the Prophet T-8 in 1983? Though that had some kind of optical system I think. Whether for velocity or poly aftertouch or both. Even though the top panel said "Pressure Mod," I'm not sure it sensed pressure or key position.
Yes that's an interesting question. Sensor technology has moved on many miles since the 80s. It's probably just recent-ish sensor technology that can be implemented in mass production.
I own an Ensoniq VFX and it has the poly AT keybed. They could have patented it the way they implement the poly AT, but not the whole thing. As far as I remember, the AT in the Ensoniq synths work with electromagnetic coils, but has been not very reliable due to be prone to interferences from the power supply.
9:30 - "does the sustain go back to zero, or is the release basically the release": OK cool, can we do the same thing in Pigments and the rest of the Arturia software instruments pretty please? I've been trying to point out the Pigments release issue with polyphonic aftertouch on the Arturia forums, and I don't think the people even understand this is a problem.
Pls Arturia bring Full Touch to keylab pro controllers.
