    Another way to think of extenders is paint conditioner. It makes the paint wetter. I put a capful of MY in a cut pot, then add about a quart of paint. Then if needed, add more M1, if needed. Also note, there are 2 types of M1. The green label, as in this video, is for latex paint. The red label is for oil based. Make sure to use the right one.

    Sounds very similar to sodium silicate that I add to clay for slipcasting. A tiny amount changes the structure of thick clay slip, and turns it to a thinner consistency without using water. I'm going to try it out in paint. It should make thick paint easier to use with a spray gun.
    We will see...

    Hi Spencer, I had a really, really bad wall that I manicured for a week. I'm using Benjamin Moore Aura paint to put the meat back on the wall. It is Acrylic. I ran out of Flood by Flotrol which was working fine. The Zinsser Latex Extender keeps separating from the paint like oil and water. Do I just keep remixing? It'a yuky day out there to go back to the paint store.
    Big thanks!

      @spencercolgan  4 года назад +2

      Absolutely. Floetrol is excellent. I’m using it today.
      When painting in the sun, I would definitely use the paint extender and also, I would spritz the top layer of the paint in the tray to protect it from evaporating; you spritz it with water from a spray bottle not to add water to the paint but just so the water on the top of the paint will evaporate rather than your paint

    It took me forever to paint 1 room, it went on thick and my brush gummed up and got ruined. This is good info. I see the thinner you have is Sunnyside M-1 Latex Paint Additive & Extender... says it extends 10-15 minutes of open time. So if you paint a whole room of trim do you just pour and mix a little at a time? Is it really that short of a timespan? Can you just pre-mix the whole can and seal it up for when you need it? Basically I am looking at painting dozens of feet of trim all over the house. I found myself painting 2 coats to get from 90s tan color trim to spotless white color. It takes me a lot of time. Thanks for the valuable info. P.S. One thing I wanted to say that you mentioned in the other video was wetting the brush before you start. I also heard in another video from another channel that cleaning the brush out every hour or so could really help avoid the destroyed brush issue I had. P.P.S. There is another video about this for people who don't know: ruclips.net/video/X43GD86STGs/видео.html

    I like to use Arroworthy Finultra brushes in this situation. 4” varnish. Nice brush. About $3 cheaper than a comparable Wooster. So I use M-1 in this situation, Flotrol if I have to Problem is a little goes a long way. I use a plastic 50ml dosing cup marked off in 10ml increments. I am no expert in the metric system. I will add 20 ml to a quart. That is roughly 2/3 oz. That is 1 and 1/3 oz per gallon if I am spraying. I don't spray more than about 25% of my work.

    QUESTION: The monkeys that I paid left roller boogers on the bathroom wall which I had to sand and repaint with a 4" Purdy 1/4" smooth nap roller. The result is I can SEE every rectangle left by the roller, despite me feathering it. The paint is BM Scuffx Semi Gloss. If I use Floetrol, can I get away with repainting the touchup areas or do I have to paint the WHOLE wall again?...

    • @spencercolgan

      Sand the entire wall with 220 sand paper on a sanding pole.
      Then. Use floetrol I’m your paint. Roll out new wall. You’ll be great.

    Great video!! All high end paints should provide plenty amounts extenders. Their is a lot of properties that go into a gallon of paint such as fillers and extender. Pigments solids solvents titanium acrylic dryers and so on. That is why we pay big bucks for top quality paint. Cheers!! Would be nice to see a video/demonstration on the Richard gooseneck flexible paint brush extension.😊😊👍

      Not at all; if you call the technical people from the paint company, they will tell you that you have to thin down the paint especially if you are spraying it. But, water maybe you’re better alternative. Please call the Customerservice technical assistance department of the paint company you buying the paint from and they will tell you what Agent you should use FaceTime what is your painting, and the product

    I enjoyed your commentary on paint extenders but I was not really impressed with the finished product you showed at the end. I am sure it looks nice to the untrained eye but I would not descrbe that as an "smooth ice rink finish" when compared to the standard of a sprayed finish or a oil based paint finish. This in my mind is the bar you are trying to reach. But again it looks very very nice however I am here looking to be impressed.

      Bardia Ghajari oops. I don’t think I was clear. I would definitely use the extender in BM Aura Semigloss especially on walls. That’s a tough sheen for walls
      I’d probably thin the paint a little with SCL Thinex Latex paint thinner, too if you can get it
      I think if you’re rolling semigloss Aura you’re going to have to have very smoothly sanded walls
      Start with 150 grit paper and work your way up to 220
      I’d also us a very smooth nap roller cover
      I like the Wooster micro plush roller covers
      I’d probably tape off everything I could so I could cut and roll very quickly and maintain a wet edge
      But there is no doubt that Aura Semigloss is very hard to work with
      Regal Select would be a little easier to work with, I think. It would “pull” less
      But I think the easiest semigloss to apply to walls would be the Ben Moore, Ben. It’s a little spattery but it’s thinner and theres little less drag and pull when applying.
      I’d still do the wall sanding and a little latex thinner or extender and the smooth nap Wooster microplush roller cover

    So.... Is water an extender???

    • @spencercolgan
      @spencercolgan  9 месяцев назад

      It is, but not a good one because, although it will keep the paint from drying too quickly, since you’re adding water to the paint, it will not keep the paint bound together and dilutes the very elements necessary to keep the paint tacky so it adheres properly. In theory therefore, yes it extends, but not a salutary extender but indeed, one detrimental to the beauty of the finished product.
