    Honestly mate, I'd run the thermal pads. If you're worried they're putting too much pressure on the drives, you can either support the drives on the back side, or even "stretch" the pads to thin them slightly before quickly applying them (thereby reducing pressure).
    As for the oily residue - typically it doesn't affect the drive or the label... a light wipe with isopropyl alcohol, and they'll look like new.
    I too run an all-nvme NAS - 4x 4tb Gen4 nvme's in a RAIDZ1 (2x Crucial P3 Plus's, 2x Lexar NM790's), along with a few 980 pros for the boot and apps/critical backup - all jammed into a Minisforum BD790i SE (Ryzen 7940HX...16c/32t... Zen4... basically sips power, and is *lightning* fast with 10gbe). You won't be disappointed with the all-nvme setup - but don't be surprised if your scrubs aren't quite as fast as you'd think they would be.

      @@heyitsjel still a work in progress but without the pads they peaked at 57 C after hours of writes. I may have to hunt down thinner pads to be safe though. I'm having some performance issues but not sure why yet. ESXi might be to blame.

      @@computersales 57c isn't terrible... my P3 Plus's cruise around 40-45c inside the Asus Hyper M.2 Gen5 x16 card. What sort of performance issues are you referring to?
      Also, what is the brand/model of the pcie to M.2 adapter card? I've had issues with cheap cards... (ie. poor performance; errors etc.). Have you checked your console for PCIe AER errors? (or dmesg)
      Edit: having said that, PCIe gen3 is usually quite achievable - I was having issues at Gen4; while Gen3 worked "okay" (but not great).

      @@heyitsjel I got the IOCREST SYBA SI-PEX40161 to put those P3 drives in. I haven't checked for any errors yet. I may need to add some settings in ESXi to improve NVMe performance otherwise the NVMe drives perform about as well as my regular SSDs in benchmarks somehow.

    • @heyitsjel
      @heyitsjel 4 дня назад

      @@computersales interesting - I have a few IOCREST products (eg. TB3/4 10gbe adapter) and they've generally been good.
      One thing I noticed on the card you're talking about, the listing on AliExpress notes "Supports data transfer up to 2.5Gb(250MB/ s),5Gb(500MB/s),8Gb(1GB/s)"...
      One thing I noticed on some cheaper nvme cards, is that even though they're not self-bifurcating (ie. mobo must support it), some still seem to have a plx chip (switch chip) for some bizarre reason... and usually it's some bottom of the barrel AsMedia chip that can't handle the throughput. I'd be very surprised if this was the case on the IOCREST, but it can't hurt to look closely at the PCB and google any chips you may find...

      @@computersales 57c should be fine for NVME (though like you said enterprise NVME would have been even better) but I wouldn't be surprised if temps dropped quite a bit with thermal pads. In my experience gen 3 doesn't run nearly as hot as gen 4/5 though I'm kind of surprised that dell doesn't support bifurcation but that's a different matter.

    Given what you have there based on what I see in your video, you might actually benefit from using Ceph instead of RAID. I'd look into that if I were you. Esp since you want to move to TrueNAS Scale. And dare I say this, but given your use case you may not even need TrueNAS Scale at all.
