The Eagle Cap Wilderness has dozens of peak-bagging opportunities and wonderful little alpine lakes; my favorites are Glacier Lake, Ice Lake, Prospect Lake and Pocket Lake. Also the Elkhorn Crest National Recreation Trail is awesome, and Strawberry Mountain is a diamond in the rough. Finally, the Seven Devil's have a world class backpacking loop with tons of great fishing, climbing, and lake bagging.
I can't thank you enough for providing 3 vital pieces of information in all your videos that often, many other RUclips creators forget: The location name, US map location and date filmed. Thank you!
@@GratefulOverlander Of course they're not hard to find, duh. And, online research is certainly at everyone's fingertips.... something I relish. However, I was simply commenting on the ease of use quotient. This way, one's not stopping the video mid-stream to look up the location. It simply puts things in clear perspective from the get-go. I find that appealing, not comical.
Too bad you weren't able to venture a few hours west to visit Christmas Valley Sand Dunes. The 200 to 300 foot dunes cover several square miles and are surrounded by an ancient forest of juniper with a couple of remote campgrounds. If you walk the perimeter of the sand and look closely at the ground, you can spot fossils of small mammals and other creatures exposed by the wind. About 30 miles southwest is the town of Fort Rock that has an interesting rock formation that forms a mile wide ring about 400 feet high that you can explore by several trails. Another 15 or 20 miles west is Hole-in-the-Ground, a mile-wide volcanic crater that resembles a meteor strike. You should plan another trip west; it would be well worth it!
Breathtaking painted hills! Nature at its best. You always find the most interesting places to visit without the distracting crowds. Great job 👏🏻👍🏻😎 The blue of Blue Basin is definitely visible
I first visited the Painted Hills on my way out of Oregon, traveling from Portland to the east coast for grad school. Couldn't spend long there because I had my kitty, but will always fondly remember her walking the short Painted Cove trail with me on her leash.
Blue basin is more colorful when it’s wet, even the runoff is blue…well really it looks green to me. I hiked that trail during a downpour and it was a stunning color.
John Day Fossil Beds National Monument with three sections Painted Hills, Clarno and Sheep Rocks units, the Sheep Rocks section with Blue Basin is the most remote and least visited.
Have you been to Mt st Helen’s to meta lake and the ape caves snd trails all around there? It’s a beautiful drive through the town of cougar and up forest roads. In the late spring/early summer on a clear day you can see four snow capped mountains. It’s the not so touristy side of the mountain. On the north side of the mountain is the more tourist friendly visitor center and more developed trails. My family used to camp on spirit lake snd meta lake when I was a kid cuz it was only an hour from our house. And fun fact, my great grandpa and gramma lived in la grande many years. My great grandpa who was born in the 1800s had a ranch out there. Old grandpa Jacobsen. So many people think of Oregon as lush and green and forget that much of Oregon is desert. It looks a lot more like the Great Basin than the Pacific Northwest. Lol
You are one of two of the most relaxing 'RV-ing' channels to watch as your personality is so suited to making your watchers feel like they are a part of the trip and truly welcomed to be so. I put you right up there with Foresty Forest at the top of all the others. Two nice guys who love what they are doing have great camera/drone talent and just enjoying their lives away from the crowds and hassles. I saw a lot of blue on those mountains so beautiful. This was a very interesting trip. 🥰
Tristan, your videos are always well done, interesting and informative. What I appreciate the most is how well spoken you are; your enunciation is fabulous. You prove that it is possible to speak without using filler words such as 'like'. Do you credit parents or teachers with your excellent speech? 😉 I'm so saddened by the lazy speech habits of today's youngest generations and wonder how it got so bad. So, kudos to you for restoring my faith in the possibilities that American English still survives. Thank you and happy travels!
My wife and I love your channel, your explorations, and great videos. We are travelers that love mts, water falls, hiking, camping, and 4WD. But at 71, our ailments are slowing us down. Thanks for all your effort to bring faraway and tucked in places to the rest of us.
I was at Blue Basin shortly after a rainstorm. Water deepens the colors and, in my opinion, it's somewhere between sage and turquoise. But there are multicolored rocks in the stream that forms when it rains.
Oregon changed their gas pumping law a few years ago to allow self serve in some rural counties, because their smaller populations and labor pools made it hard to hire and keep pump jockeys.
There is a fossil site discovered in Nebraska that was given over to the state immediately and developed into a state historical site. The dig site was enveloped in a large building and visitors can view the dig as it happens and the fossil bones in situ. It's, of course, way out of the way and far from any Nebraska places you'd likely be interested in, but it's called Ashfall Fossil Beds and it's in the northeast section of the state if you ever find yourself in the area.
I’m living vicariously through you- thank you for taking us on these trips. If I still taught earth science I would definitely show my students your videos. Thanks for all the great information and history.
WOW FIRST. Not that I really care about that, LOL, but amazed. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. I’ve been taking notes on where you go for our future trips for a couple years now. Some places we’re capable of going to or just enjoying you’re going and noting, not for us. I love your cinematography and information on how the drive or hiking is, it really helps! Yes, New Jersey is the same and yes, I’m taken by surprise every time I fill up when I’m up that way. Sorry I can’t offer any suggestions on where next. I’m in the Wash.DC area and not familiar with the Western country. Come to the East and I can recommend places, LOL. SAFE JOURNEYS and THANK YOU for your videos!
Painted Hills is such an amazing place. I visited a handful of times when I still lived in Washington. In fact, after the initial phase of the pandemic, I made sandwiches and did a 16 hour roundtrip to visit it with my camera. It felt like a pretty big deal at the time. Definitely a place best visited in mid to late afternoon, or sunset. Also amazing in the winter with bands of snow mixing in with the sand colors.
If you have not been to Fossil Butte National Monument in SW Wyoming, stop in on your next trip that way. You may be able to take a guided hike up to the quarry high on the hill to the east, but the most interesting thing is the huge exhibit of fossils, including eight foot long turtle fossils. Its a great exhibit.
The crain looking thing was a crane and it likely dragged a huge bucket on chains. They were called drag buckets. Thank you for taking us along on your adventures. Sometime you need to visit the Tri-state mining district in SE Kansas, NE Oklahoma and SW Missouri... Do it in the spring or fall definitely not during our really hot humid summer. You could do it in a car or a minivan, because anything you want to see off decent gravel roads is hiking anyway.
Every time we travel out west (from Virginia), we find something new and really interesting. Then we see videos like yours detailing these great places we passed on our journey. Yikes! We could travel full time and still miss an interesting place. Thank you for your video. Since we only found your channel yesterday, we have lots of viewing to catch up.
Cool video Tristan. I really appreciate all of the GPS coordinates you note for us. One can see on Google Maps the miles of "tailings" left behind the Sumpter dredge down the Powder River Valley creating interesting geometric shapes; a drone probably would catch that well. The dredging did leave an ugly scar on the land but yet it's part of the West's history. Another really beautiful area in NE Oregon are the Wallowa Mountains and especially the Eagle Cap Wilderness. It's definitely more of a backpacking thing but you should check it out in late summer. The area is similar to the Sawtooths and the Wind River Range in that it's primarily made of granite rocks which is unusual for Oregon and called "The Alps" of Oregon.
Wow! We went there a few years ago when it was overcast and drizzling rain. We tried to go a couple of weeks ago on our way back from Kam Wah Chung State Heritage Site (so fascinating!) but it was raining. It looks like we've missed some trails at JDFBNM and now, we'll have to go back! Beautiful! Thanks again,Tristan, for another great video.
Yeah ive had the guy come out and stand beside me when i was pumping my gas. He just looked at my plate and said i see your from Washington, and i finally got it.
Thanks Tristan. I appreciate learning about the human history, geology, geography, natural history of the areas you visit. It adds a depth and perspective that I really enjoy.
This is a very special place I was there in 2015...I went to all 3 of the Units, and enjoyed all of them!! The Fossils were hard to find I saw Leaf Fossils...Thanks for the video!!
I'm convinced you are part mountain goat. I found the water cannon intriguing. Despite its destructive history, imagine it in a modern water park! 🤽🤽♂🤽♀🌊
Also lots of public lands and amazing treadles around Mt Adams in WA. One of the most stunning places in WA is Cispus Pass and Goat Rocks wilderness. If you like angels landing you might enjoy, if you haven’t done it already, the knifes edge. But pick a sunny day and low wind conditions or it will be miserable snd extremely disappointing. If it’s clear you will have the most epic views ever in trail
Right before your music montage of the visitor centers displays I did notice the blue in the hills behind you. What a beautiful place! Thank you for sharing with me.
It’s surreal watching your videos sometimes. I went to high school in Long Creek and Dayville Oregon, and I also spent my childhood in Cortez, CO. Love seeing these places get some recognition! I hope you enjoyed your time!
The Blue Basin is easily washed out when dry, but is quite blue/green when it's wet! I love that hike, and since I live nearby it's easy to get there when the weather is best for viewing: October thru April usually.
Born and raised in Oregon . Love the beauty of our state and there’s always something else to go see . I haven’t been to the Painted Hills but the beauty of Nature never ceases to amaze me. Thank you for your videos you do a wonderful job .
When you live here though, you know how bad the people and drug addicts are here. Making it impossible to feel safe leaving your belongings at home. Oregon is a shithole for living
Tristan, a National Monument that has a lot of visible fossils is Dinosaur NM (UT, CO). The main display is protected from the elements with a big structure, but you will be able to see the fossils sticking out of the earth. Great video, thanks!
I saw the blue color in the rocks as you walked away. So beautiful !! I chuckle every time there is a natural arch in a video. I know how much you like them !!
great trip.. love that arch!! waaaay different than the 'normal' arches I've visited. .. oh and yes, definitely saw the blue in the hills (tho some of it was kindof a sea-foam green). Thanks again for taking the time and taking us along.
It's been over 10 years since I spent time in the John Day Natl Monument, but back then, there was a hillside behind the high school in the town of Fossil (so, not actually within the national monument, but in the general vicinity) where you could freely pull a sort of shale-y, layered rock right out of the hillside, split it apart, and find fossils. There were probably 20 people out there doing this when we were there. We spent maybe half an hour there and found numerous fossils. Of course nothing like the specimens in the visitor center, mostly plant fossils, but we did find some really nice ones. I have no idea if that's still possible there. The lighting conditions definitely make all the difference at Painted Hills. We were there late afternoon, and it was nicer than what you saw, though I wasn't blown away or anything. I ended up chatting with another visitor for a while and not looking at the hills at all when my ex-wife started tapping me on the shoulder and saying, "Look, Look!" The sun had emerged from behind some clouds and the hillside had exploded with glorious, saturated colors and I was like, "Aaaaahhhh...THAT'S why people get excited about this place." :-) It still doesn't compare to all of the amazing colors I have since seen in Utah, but it's nonetheless a treat here in this land of gray rock that is Oregon. Great series, always enjoyable to see you passing through Oregon and sharing interesting discoveries.
I camped on the BLM land just around back of the Painted Hills once. It's a leave no trace area, so no fires, but there's a solid dirt road and plenty of pull-offs for parking if you have a van/RV. And it's so close that you can easily walk back to the fossil areas and various trails.
Been to Clarno and Painted Hills units, one of them had a while wash that was made up of a pale green rock that was really cool looking. Next site in Oregon is you have to see the Wallowa mountains NE of La Grande, you would also like the Elkhorn mountains East of Baker and the Strawberry Mountains SE of John Day, both of which are high parts of the Blue Mountains.
When your traction boards wear out check into Go treads , they fold into a smallish cube for easier packing I also use them to level my pickup when camping
At Clarno Formation, there is a trail that allows you to see fossils in the rock. Very interesting short hike that ends with a mini arch. Also, Blue Basin is more blue after a good rain. The streams run that same color. Quite beautiful.
I think that's Tufa stone Tristan which would be like fossilized lava. I loved the painted hills and had no idea they existed. Thanks for the great video!
Audio: The best part about this entire video, was NOT listening to someones idling diesel vehicle in the backround. I'm totally convinced there's a new "Contest" sweeping all outdoor locations: "How long can we leave our vehicle idling and burning up fuel (while complaining about fuel prices), creating pollution, and ruining the experience for others who's sole goal in life is to breath in your diesel fumes."
Amazing views of a place I haven't ever heard of. Old mechanical stuff like the dredge always fascinates. We had a great time checking out the paddle-wheeler in Fairbanks and an old excavator in Jade City. Thanks for sharing!
I was born in John Day OR and grew up in Eastern Oregon. And we were just there beginning of June. But didn't realize there are 3 sections to the Painted Hills Monument, thanks for sharing!!
I have seem many of your videos and I love them all but I have not seem much of you in southern California. We have gorgeous trails in Malibu specially, Topanga Canyon and Las Virgenes Road. I would like to see you here at home (my home). Thank you Tristan.Great Job!
How many extra steps do you take on each trail in order to get us all the “action” footage😂 Love your stuff man. Im full time in my SUV currently in Oregon so i might check this spot out!
Everything about that was cool; I especially like your comment at the arch, "Pretty cool, huh!" You bring your viewers along & make them feel like they are with you! By the way, you are correct about New Jersey being the other state that won't allow you to pump your gas. Another place I hope you get to eventually is Abode House (?) In Wyoming. Oops, make that Adobetown.
I’m with you on the pumping gas thing. It also takes me by surprise on my way to NYCity we always stop in New Jersey to fill before the price change in NY. It is strange to let someone else fill my car!
Enjoy all your adventures! Enjoyed see the map with arrow too because I had no idea where this place was :). Enjoy hearing the history you share while showcasing the landscape. 200 pound zip ties?! I didn’t know they existed. Zip ties are my friend, strong double side tape is too.
I,m new to your channel and I already plan to travel the west in my F250 camper. Your naration is great. You are speaking to people of all levels from average hiker to mountain climber and that is hard but you pull it off.
WOW!!!! The painted hills are incredible 😲 It's all amazing! I can't believe it is all in Oregon either! I agreed about the gas until I spent a nasty, cold stormy month up there. Then when I got home I sat waiting the 1st time I went to get gas! 😂
Sun Tunnels for the solstice. You will definitely not be alone. Or visit them a few days after where it’s still close to line up for sunrise or sunset and less people.
Thanks Tristan! Looked more green blue to me. Just visited Hagerman Fossil Beds NM and the most interesting item was the visitor center with what was found in the ground. It was really nice that the NPS joined with Idaho State Parks with one visitor center. So, back on track, really nice video. Looking forward to more.
According to Earl Perkins who did a commercial 30 yrs ago referring to pinecones saying many parts are edible if alive could have stayed at that campsite for years.
WOW ~ beautiful scenery ~ that hike is amazing ~ you make it all look so easy ~ very informative and appreciated . Thank you for sharing your journey ! Look fwd to the next place 🌞
Thanks for watching! Where should I go next? 😁 -Tristan

Go back to New Mexico. Lots to see
Picketwire Canyonlands in SE Colorado. It has dinosaur tracks that are awesome. Too funny, I was just at John Day a week ago.
Go to Northern Montana and find a great place to hike in Glacier National Park. That would be awesome. =-)

There is a great book written by Peter Stark called Astoria if anyone is interested in learning more about the expedition that included John Day.
One of my fav books as an audiobook! What incredible history!
John Day has two rivers named after him, one the major river in Eastern Oregon and the other a very short river near Astoria
The view reminds me how beautiful our country is and it is all ours and ours to enjoy.
Breathtaking painted hills! Nature at its best. You always find the most interesting places to visit without the distracting crowds. Great job 👏🏻👍🏻😎 The blue of Blue Basin is definitely visible

Love your video’s, the interesting places - and your subtle humor. The story about the man bereft of everything, including his clothes…

Hello Neighbor, I live in North Clark County and have pulled a lot of people out of that area on rescues in places like the Ape Caves.
Tristan, if you are going to the area south of Mt. St. Helens and ape cave a must do hike is Lava Canyon. Multiple waterfalls. Beautiful scenery.
It was easy to see the blue tint to the rocks. You did well.
If you drive north east out of Prineville to go to the Painted Hills will drive through the Ochoco National Forest a very beautiful. drive

That crane-like thing is a dragline dredge. It would essentially drag a heavy scooping bucket across a river bottom to collect pay dirt.
Absolutely loved this place! We traveled 120 miles as a day trip while visiting Smith Rocks (another must see) and thought it well worth the drive.
Tristan as a climber would love Smith Rocks

When your traction boards wear out check into Go treads , they fold into a smallish cube for easier packing
I also use them to level my pickup when camping
Nice tour, Tristan. You can see those 'water canons' at work in Clint Eastwood`s movie Pale Rider. Ride On !
At Clarno Formation, there is a trail that allows you to see fossils in the rock. Very interesting short hike that ends with a mini arch. Also, Blue Basin is more blue after a good rain. The streams run that same color. Quite beautiful.
Really fun adventure 👍
As always.........beautiful vlog. Always learn something new. Thanks.......
WOW!!! now this would be an awesome place to paint..and I'm a landscape oil painter.!!
Triston I loved the Painted Hills! So unique! ❤️😀🇺🇸🚙
I have seem many of your videos and I love them all but I have not seem much of you in southern California. We have gorgeous trails in Malibu specially, Topanga Canyon and Las Virgenes Road. I would like to see you here at home (my home). Thank you Tristan.Great Job!
How many extra steps do you take on each trail in order to get us all the “action” footage😂
Love your stuff man. Im full time in my SUV currently in Oregon so i might check this spot out!
We will be there in about a month so your video is well timed! Great information for the area. Thanks for posting them.
Clarno unit, Strawberry Mountains, Wallowa Mountains and Hells Canyon in NE Oregon are all well worth a visit
This looks like an interesting area. I could see a tinge of blue, but I think it would be easier to see in person.
Wow beautiful painted hills!
Thank you for showing us this area!
The Little Painted Desert just North of Winslow on Hwy 87 is worth the Ride !
Hi Tristan 👋 those painted hills are so amazing...isn't hot out there ....you be safe 😎
I’m with you on the pumping gas thing. It also takes me by surprise on my way to NYCity we always stop in New Jersey to fill before the price change in NY. It is strange to let someone else fill my car!
Thanks again Tristan. Good stuff. Always so knowledgeable. I learn from every video and take something with me everytime.
Enjoy all your adventures! Enjoyed see the map with arrow too because I had no idea where this place was :). Enjoy hearing the history you share while showcasing the landscape.
200 pound zip ties?! I didn’t know they existed. Zip ties are my friend, strong double side tape is too.
Thank you, Tristan. You are an awesome tour guide to our huge and wonderful country. 👍
I suggest, little city of rocks.
Southern Idaho.
It's like skyscraper rocks
Really neat
You did it, again. Another great video of a very interesting place to see. Thank you!
Great video; yes I could see a slight bluish tinge to the hills; nice😎😎😎👍👍👍👍👌👌👌
Great Job, brother!
Tristan my favorite part was the Painted Hills! Thank you!❤️😀🇺🇸🌏🚙
Beautiful views! I didn't know that Oregon was so beautiful.
Cool video, really nice views. Hopefully one day they will reforest the area.
Sun Tunnels for the solstice. You will definitely not be alone. Or visit them a few days after where it’s still close to line up for sunrise or sunset and less people.
Schöne Erinnerung an die Painted Hills. Ich war 2018 dort.
Terrific video. We are heading out going to several places you and Cassie went in Idaho. LOVE having your Adventure Know-How website.
According to Earl Perkins who did a commercial 30 yrs ago referring to pinecones saying many parts are edible if alive could have stayed at that campsite for years.
From Fruita, Co. thanks for the video. So beautiful. Take care
WOW ~ beautiful scenery ~ that hike is amazing ~ you make it all look so easy ~ very informative and appreciated . Thank you for sharing your journey ! Look fwd to the next place 🌞
