The issue is identifying what force is making them accelerate when they should be slowing down. This is that whole 'dark' as in 'unknown' area that is always so popular in questions. Geoff, I also heard the same. But since distance = time. Then the red shift that is witnessed is from an earlier point in history. That leads me to believe that the expansion is slowing, not accelerating.
@@codyx8273 I had a similar thought regarding time.......but here's another question that provides a wrinkle...WHERE are we observing from, relative to the original Big Bang? Is it possible that this 2nd and 3rd generation matter may have been in a black hole or two at a given time you think? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_(particle_physics)
I would say 'No.' Not unless there were some process _beyond_ Hawking Radiation, through which particles were able to leave said black hole. For example: If black holes could explode in the way a white dwarf does when it goes supernova, then 'Yes.' Beyond that, however, I'd have to say no.
Tez from England and my Star Talk question is if dark matter is still unknown and has been for past 90ish years. What have we found out about it since discovery till now?
We found out quite a bit actually, like Dr Tyson says DM is actually dark gravity, it tends to drive the universe together, we can measure it but we can't see nor contain it since it doesn't interact with the electromagnetic forces nor with regular matter, in other words, it's invisible and can pass right through regular matter. Hopefully Dr Tyson will give you more insight on the subject.

I took Science in High School but couldn't fall in love with it. Wish I had an inspiring teacher and a better education system. Anyways its all coming back and thankfully I can understand stuff here because of the little science I studied.
Guys, can I pose a question, please? Black holes are described as black because we have no idea what happens in there, so instead of everything going down to the size of a pea, would it not be plausible that it opens up to another subspace plain or dimension that we are unable to observe? So essentially space would be a huge sponge with holes opening up in random places. Obviously, As the observer, you can see the whole, but you can't observe the void on the other side of the sponge. I hope that makes sense? Matter, has to go somewhere and would also kind of explain the expansion spacetime. Love the show, Mr Tyson you are a legend!
46:20 - Distractions are useful for creativity, they can spur ideas, and make you think about things deeper, the problem isn't so much distractions, it's not letting your thoughts think about something deeply. And so you learn about science, you get the fundamentals down, you watch a TV show on a worm hole, and you sit down and you wonder, can I make that happen. Issac started everything because someone distracted him with a bet, he then went in to try understand that deeply, he didn't hold back on thinking about this. So in some ways it's a bit like you have to give yourself time to meditate, but you also have to explore ideas and think about how you can make them work. You have to give yourself time to think about the world deeper. Rather then just rushing from one thing to another.

The one of the best episode that should be seen by all science enthusiasts. Love the show
Tez from England and my Star Talk question is if dark matter is still unknown and has been for past 90ish years. What have we found out about it since discovery till now?
it is still in the dark.
We’ve found out that . . . We need to find out more .
Hopefully Dr Tyson will give you more insight on the subject.
personally, i love this channel, Neil and Chuck make this so much more interesting. Thnx Mat Pat
Technically military funding does occasionally leads to science discoveries, i.e. nuclear power from Manhattan project.🤔
Not to mention WWII... microwaves, radar, the V2 ( Saturn rocket and apollo).
Yall are just awesome!! And so was Justin Wilson! Love the podcast. Thanks for making such great content.
Thought the title said "black holes matter". Lol
Perfect t-shirt for Star Talk. I would by one (if they come in 4XL).
I DID TOO LOL
Black holes do matter
-black hole- "we need our space! We have our rights!"
I mean.. technically black holes are still pink. #isaidit
These are sort of the same questions/videos on repeat, but, I don't care. I still watch them all the way through while doing chores.
"distractions"
* silently slowly stops this video
Hiii
Thanks!
" - We probably lost a few centuries in the history of civilization because of people standing in denial of the role of natural forces relative to supernatural ones."
- Neil deGrasse Tyson
If things don't change dramatically and quickly, we're gonna be losing our future to the same thing.
*rolls eyes*
What is the most fascinating thing that magnets and electrical conductivity have in common? I am a huge fan and student of startalk !! Thank you for the education information and also the laughs 🙏👽
"The American way, as we call it" loool :-D
Nothing like a Neil and chuck cosmic queries episode
Chuck looks very tired. Me too.
I took Science in High School but couldn't fall in love with it. Wish I had an inspiring teacher and a better education system. Anyways its all coming back and thankfully I can understand stuff here because of the little science I studied.
I love you, Chuck Nice and your pronunciations! You are wonderful!
"ask anything you feel. That's what's important here." Shows what kind of guy Neil is
Best podcast's ever, on Joe Rogan's level 🤟
I only watch the episodes with Chuck lol its just so much better...
I watched every episode during lockdown 😆 so im always excited for a new episode.
This is your best episode, GALACTIC GUMBO
Hello Chuck and Niel. I am a chronicle pain patient and live a lot longer in lock down then the virus is here. I live alone and besides my social aid I get barely other visits and my hip pain won't allow me to walk or sit much. The main thing to keep your mind healthy is to keep your mind and hands busy. For instance. I play games on console in the morning, in the afternoon I paint miniatures while laying down and in the evening I watch series / movies or play more games.
To everyone ems who read this. Please chear this tip with others.
The sound quality on these videos is way better and significantly louder than others
I alaways firgits tah push that there like button till it’s almost too late, cuz, I’m so fascinated by the discussion!
Loved the little life talk, before questions... very nice!
Neil gets so deep its like he's speaking to my sole, when he spoke about isolation, he's my hero and dont even know it.
Antarctica is fine if you like living off grid and extreme solitude. Neil, StarLord Nice THANK YOU. YOU GUYS ARE GREAT.
These two are the best, greetings from Holland.
One...Mr. Tyson is much better than the other.
Hey Neil,
There are some comments below saying that people fall asleep listening to your soothing voice..... You should consider doing a sleep story about something in your field for the CALM app. I use this app quite often to fall asleep at night. My favorite sleep story is with Matthew McConaughey, you may be able to knock him out of first place.... Challange laid down.... Mic drop.
All the best,
Steve
When I listen to Chuck, particularly the questions that he asks and his ideas, l wonder if he might have missed his calling. Who knows? Perhaps he could be the World's first comedian- astrophysicist.
@Ms Taylor contrarily, many comedians are quite intelligent, witty, and creative.
This show teaches me more than school does.
