Why Toronto is wrong about Henry Dundas

  • The City of Toronto is moving forward with its decision to rename Yonge-Dundas Square to “Sankofa Square,” in an effort to distance the city from maligned historical figure Henry Dundas, who has been accused of delaying the abolition of slavery. Former NDP MP Lynn McDonald joined True North’s Andrew Lawton to explain why the historical criticisms of Dundas are misguided, and why she believes the renaming to be unjustified and unnecessary.

This is definitely about erasing White Canada 🇨🇦 and propping up BIPOC groups.
Down the street from me is a city funded green house and gardening co-op, the sell food that is grown to the local community, but they give a significant discount to BIPOC families, they give gardening space to BIPOC people over White community members.

I will keep calling it Yonge-Dundas square, just I will keep Ryerson University (RU) and not the new name TMU. The book 1984 has become a manual and being followed and we see it putting it in place. The overall cost of renaming a street is beyond insane. What will the final cost be for renaming Ryerson University, probably $100 million, give or take. History is repeating as so many have failed to learn from it.

We currently have many people in our society, that have too much time on their hands. Let's keep canceling history!
The same group of people think there's a bottomless pit of money.
So we can waste it on frivolous things like this name changing exercise.
Apparently these people can sleep better at night.

I am surprised how the society allows this idea of renaming happen. Are there no forces to withstand this? It is silly to spend the society's money on this. If they wanted to do this was that not be right to have a kind of referendum? what bothers me lately is that the authorities allow themselves to do whatever they please.

Remember, in Canada and the US, the last holdouts against abolishing slavery were the native tribes, villages, and communities. They argued its their ancestry right to continue as they have done forever with other tribes and peoples. Well befire the Europeans and ithers shieed up.
I am not using "nation" to describe them intentionally as I think many and all should stop and address them as they were, tribes, bands, and at best village communities that traveled between summer and winter locations.
Let's focus on the facts here and bring about some actual positive change for canada and history?

There is no reason to observe "Black History Month" because we never had slavery in Canada. It was abolished throughout the Empire before there ever was a "Canada". But at least "Sankofa" will recognize the role Africans had in selling their fellows into slavery.

In BC names are being changed to indigenous names based on faulty narratives. Even a local lake that was a gravel pit that filled with water, aptly called gravel pit lake, got a new name though it did not exist historically.🙄

When the left activists come after Sir George Yonge, this is worth considering: "Yonge was considered an expert on Roman roads: 'He was a man of letters, an F.R.S., and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, to which he communicated an excellent memoir on the subject of Roman roads and camps, in connection with some discoveries that had been made at Mansfied, in Nottinghamshire, and hence the peculiar fitness of naming Yonge Street after him, it being precisely such a road, and adapted to similar uses, as those he had been engaged in examining."

What did Henry Dundas do to indigenous peoples?
Also in 1795, not far away on the island of St. Vincent, after decades of trying to force the Indigenous population - the Garifuna - to sell their land, British forces led by Dundas “hunted down Indigenous Vincentians across the island, massacring entire villages and destroying Garifuna autonomy”.
