Fun fact, the stereotypical American red barn was born out of a similar need. Paint was too expensive, so farmers improvised their own out of linseed oil and red ochre. The ochre would oxidize in the sun and create a protective red coating that worked so well that farmers continued using this mixture even when paint prices dropped. Eventually the look became so archetypal, that most people don't question it, and just paint barns red because in their minds, that's just how it is.
It's not just Norway that has these red houses, I think most, if not all, of the Nordic countires (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland) has them. I'm Swedish and red houses are the most traditional and stereotypical here 😊 Most of them are (or at least were) painted with falu rödfärg (falu redpaint) named after the swedish town Falun. The build looks great! Good luck in the competiotion! 😊
Now that you mention it I think I actually knew that! It’s so interesting how it somehow did not transfer to (a lot) of other places in the world though! And thank you!! 🥰
I lived in a little red house with red corners before and in an area that all had white with yellow edges and then the "main" house of the area was yellow with white corners.@@Rosannatxt
@cecilialagerstrom46 I am Swedish myself, but I just moved to Småland. Which honestly feels like the "home of red houses" because of Astrid Lindgren. I know it isn't, but I am pretty sure Emil and Bullerbyn are a good reason it's so well-known outside of Sweden
This immediately made me think of the book, Golden Compass, Svalbard is also a place in the book. The places are supposed to be fictional but still based on real-life places. In Svalbard, we have armoured bears. Svalbard in Philip Pullman's HDM series is located north of "Sveden". The design of the buildings also remind me of Aurora Skies from the Sims 3. I hope we get a world like this in Sims 4
@@Rosannatxt honestly my favorite book. also, I remember watching your video about save files almost a yea ago and I decided to create my own. I'm still working on it lol but anyway thanks for inspiring me on this save file journey - because it's so much fun
I just came across this build randomly and I’m not one to make comments very often but I had to say this is stunning. Another reason why I stopped to watch this is because one of my most prized possessions is a postcard from Svalbard from my uncle. He used to go to the island during the summer months for research and one year sent me a post card. I never really met anyone who knows where Svalbard even is. Anyway, kudos on the great job and for winning this week 🎉🎉
Aaaah thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to write a comment, it means a lot 🥰 And that postcard sounds like such a cool thing to have, it’s a personal treasure, make sure to keep it safe!! 🧡🧡
Thank you!! 🧡 And we had to work with what we have in the game 🤣🤣 I was like “can I really do this” but then just felt like I had to because it was also kind of funny
This got recommended to me, and randomly reading a Norwegian word/name while scrolling through a bunch of English titles really tripped me up lol And what an absolutely beautiful Sims building! It looked so stunning and really brings out that Norwegian feel. On the island where I grew up on during my first years, the majority of the few houses looked exactly like this, over the water with old boats as well.
Absolutely amazing build definitely worth being a first place . It’s stunning it should be on the holidays where you can visit with your sims . Well done congrats on your build
I live in the northernmost municipality of Norway, Nordkapp (Northcape). We do not live very different from Svalbard. But we're connected to the mainland and more civilized.
funfact !! youre not "allowed" to die on svalbard bc the permafrost makes it impossible to bury people! when people get old or sick, they have to go to the norweigian mainland to die there 😅 this build is absolutely insane (in a good way) btw...! it made me want to download the tool mod.. so inspiring!
I read this when doing research! Such a wild reality haha!! Glad you like the build and have fun building with TOOL, it genuinly unlocks a new level of creativity! 💛
Aaah thank you!! I've been to Norway twice but only to Oslo so I've yet to see the red cabins (although you can see some from the plane when you land). I'd love to see them in the winter haha
Wow thats amazing! I'm impressed with how much research you did for this build! This does actually remind me more of Lofoten because of the mountain and signature red houses. I looked at your reference pictures and the second one is actually from Lofoten (I don't know if thats intentional or not). But the build looks amazing, and definitely looks like it's taken straight out of Norway
Thank you!! I actually found out later (when much of the build was done) that the inspiration picture was from Lofoten! When you google ‘Svalbard’ this picture shows so often that I never realized it might not be the place 😅
Did not know you and I do love your work (and your commitment to give us a realistic one, with all the details regarding different season, light, and so on!). Svalbard have always make me think about the ex-husband birth place. He was born in an canadian archepelo called "Magdalen Island" (PQ). A really windy and snowy land build by fishermen. Their houses are beautifully coloured and their story says that the first ones were built with shipwreck pieces. Each family got their own colour (yellow, green and red traditionally), so the fishermen could sail their boat to their houses. It is not exactly like in Svalbard, but there's something similar ;) Good job for this one!
wooow it’s so cool you lived here! I would love to travel there once to experience it, after learning so much about it. I’m honored to hear you think I captured the atmosphere, that was really what I tried to do! 🧡
@@Rosannatxt I only lived there from September to late March while attending the folk high school there, but it was more than enough to time to fall in love with the place! I absolutely recommend travelling there, especially in the winter so you can experience the polar nights! 🌌

I don’t see how it’s not playable as practically it should work - i did not use any sims tools that would make it unplayable (like terrain your sims cannot walk). If you mean that it’s not playtested - that is correct. I built it for the purpose of building and not for playing. So when you play here there might be some things where you have to move furniture around to make sims pass. But that should not take too long if you really want to play here :)
@@Rosannatxt I think it’s mostly the cabin in the back. He couldn’t get into the bedroom so I tried resizing it and moving things around and he still couldn’t. Turns out it was the giant rocks behind the cabin which is weird, but that’s what was above the sims head in the thought bubble when he couldn’t get into the room. And I think the other room too with the pastel blue bed on the very right. Only one person can use the bed.
Like mentioned in my previous comment - I build this for the building competition, not really to be played in. If you want to play in here you can make adjustments needed to make if playable if you want. The big rock in the back is weird and should not be causing issues but since it's The Sims it also doesn't surprise me that sometimes weird things happen.@@friendliestbug
