      Having both the surfshark promotion and the patreon/utreon/etc promotion in the same video, with an awkwardly short gap of regular content inbetween them, feels awkward. I would stick to either one promo per video, splitting the promos between very beginning and very end of the video, or both promos being at the beginning.

      I'm inclined towards a leaf shaped hewing spear with wings. 18"-24"/45cm-61cm blade with at least 6"-8"/15cm-20cm of a socket. That would double for a Gladius/Archer's Sword. And if you haft it on anything between 1m-1.5m you end up with a demi-spear that suffices as a long sword as well. And let us NEVER forget, some big-stick engery, eh Shad? Three weapons out of one weapons-system. And even somewhat concealable with the blade sheathed under some clothing and the haft as a walking stick.

    Personally I'd say it's the bastard (or hand-and-a-half) sword that is king. It has all the same qualities that make the longsword great but I think the slight decrease in range is more than made up for in the ability to effectively wield it single- or two-handed. The versatility of using a shield or a partying dagger or switching forms from one to two handed mid fight to throw off your opponent elevates the bastard sword over the longsword

  • @matilija
    @matilija Год назад +69

    While longsword is a "two" handed sword, it's often light enough to be comfortably wielded 1 handed, providing it the versatility to be used with a shield where a greatsword would often be too heavy to be comfortably wielded 1 handed. I think I agree with your assessment that the Longsword is likely the most versatile sword type while also being immensely useful in most typical sword use cases. That said, I personally prefer hand and a half swords at ren faires because i'm less likely to hit peoples ankles when I turn around. :P

      I feel like we have to take into account context though. Are we talking about a battlefield, dueling, self-defense? Longsword isn't the most ideal in most of those situations. Shields are pretty necessary on the battlefield, so one-handed swords are gonna be more favored as backup weapons to spears. Rapiers are by far the most dominating dueling weapon. Longswords are pretty cumbersome as a self-defense weapon.

      I don't know where the one-handed use comes from. Yes, they are able to be "used" one-handed. They're awful at it though. Cuts always are overswung and the point is so long that accuracy goes down the drain. While I find they can be somewhat used one-handed, it's as useful as saying a rifle can be used one handed.
      Hand-and-a-half swords really are the largest end of single-handed use.
      I would say unless you use the longsword like a rapier, an arming sword will beat a longsword in one-handed combat most of the time/

    Here is my comment to combat the algorithm! I've been watching this channel for goodness knows how long, and it's nice to have a video that hearkens back to the days when Shad would just chat about a specific topic. Don't get me wrong, Nate and Tyranth are both wonderful people and watching them and their antics always bring a smile to my face; and I understand that times and needs also change. But I kinda miss the "armchair chats" Shad used to have. It'd be nice to have one of those again every now and then. Anyways, that's my two cents, can't wait for the next video!

But a lantern and grappling also came up a lot. I preferred to have a sword that I could comfortably use with one hand, but still had room to put both hands on it comfortably. That being said though, I have long arms and could usually at reach someone with a proper longsword, or at least match them.

    definitely agree! Most longswords are light enough (and if made properly) to be used with one hand. most are long enough to keep a good distance from an opponent but can also be used pretty close. I think indoors in a small room would be an issue though. Unless the blade is about arming sword length.

    My thoughts is that, though not being the most optimal weapon in all situations, it always offer pretty decent means to deal with oponents provided you have the skills and training. It's a weapon for adaptable and creative fighters, and I love that about it.

    I'd argue the Gladius and/or Spatha. Stabbing weapons have always proven to be far more deadly than slicing weapons (just by the nature of how hard a stab is to treat instead of a slice), place on top of that how effective and long-used they were in (arguably) the most effective military in history. And I think it deserves to be in the conversation, if not the undisputed best.
    Even besides deadliness it's shorter width makes it excellent for group fights, and it's more broad blade also gives it enough reliability to parry and hold up from direct hits and attacks on hard surfaces.
    And most importantly the blade itself is actually small enough that it's still in relatively common use today as an alternative to home defense and machate-uses (as shown by one of your own previous sponsors). The fact is the average person being able to own and wield a Gladius is a much greater sign as it's effectiveness and use than compared to how someone may own a longsword, katana, etc. but not use it outside of specific situations.
    Really the most overall generalist weapon with no real flaws or downsides to it's use outside of perhaps blade size and an underwhelming slice potential when compared to other blades.

    • @trolltalwar
      @trolltalwar Год назад +5

      you raise good arguments however the gladius became obsolete by the second century and the spatha became obsolete by the 6th century. id think they would of remained prominent for longer if they were truly the best. sword evolution took the path that it did for a reason

    • @boodstain
      @boodstain Год назад

      @@trolltalwar Obsolete by whose standards? They weren't fit for the less rigid warfare that came afterwards or the gunpowder after that yes, but that's by no means their fault or a sign of them being "obsolete". That's like saying "The Katana became obsolete the second they were introduced to the European longsword", you're judging them based off of use, but their use is much like a culture, it is dependent on the time, place, and people who wield them.
      Besides by that logic the Longsword, katana, etc. all these weapons are now obsolete due to use today, but the Gladius is not because it is currently in use by militaries and private use. (although much smaller than their original design). Which would still make their argument for being the best stronger, not weaker.

    Longsword is great, if you have the requisite skill and the space to use one. For most people, including anyone with a day job, and anyone in tight spaces (ie. indoors) a cutlass/falchion/shortsword would probably be more useful. Same way a handgun is primarily a defensive weapon in the modern world. While a rifle is what you choose when you intend to go on the offense.

      Longswords are far better for battlefields on their own though.

  • @maxhensley1685
    @maxhensley1685 Год назад +5

    I think the increased ease of cutting effectively with a single-edged sword shouldn't be understated. You can call it a skill issue, since with perfect edge alignment and technique you can cut just as effectively with a double edged sword, but it's a whole lot simpler to execute a technique with perfect edge alignment and form when you're cutting tatami mats or bottles than it is when you're trying to cut a moving opponent who's also trying to attack you with a weapon.
    If you parry an opponent's sword and deliver a counterstroke, it might not even be humanly possible to strike with perfect edge alignment, because your blade is still vibrating from the shock of the blade clash. A more rigid blade will help minimize the extent to which your cutting capacity may be reduced in live fighting even with perfect form.
    That's not to say that double-edged swords don't have real advantages in combat, but we shouldn't minimize the assets of single-edged ones by looking only at the advantages they have in test cutting either.

Though I have recently taken a deep dive into broadswords (the scottish basket hilt broadsword, since "broadsword" gets thrown around a lot) tons of different versatile designs. Can have incredible range, cutting and thrusting power, you can even have a backsword with the a double edge at the tip, so its got increased strength for cutting in addition to being able to strike with the false edge in a back cut, and it's got full hand protection, in addition to being usable with a shield, without sacrificing much in reach. The big downside is, they require a bit more strength to wield, but as saber was what I trained in in my younger years, a lot of the techniques transfer over really well.

Just curious - you added the "everyday" or "duel" or "self Defense" caveat several times in your video - would your analysis change in a battlefield? Personally - i would think that a shield and a single handed sword might be better? Both because the shorter blade would allow you to thrust whilst in close proximity to other people. and the added protection of a shield? Though at least in the western world i would also think the sword would maybe be a bit of a "sidearm"? not sure. id think some type of hammer or pick, or spear would be a better primary. anyway! thanks for the vid!

It's such an out-of-left-field conclusion that I'm quite frankly delighted. Imagine how boring it would have been if he'd picked a type of sword that he constantly gushes over and collects more and more versions of, and tests and compares with other more specialized swords to demonstrate how it's just plain superior for being a jack of all trades, and quite possibly jerks himself off to the thought of it on a regular basis? The longsword truly is the most versatile bladed weapon ever, there's nothing it cannot do well. It can even beat a dead horse!
