  • Sir Charles Spencer "Charlie" Chaplin, KBE (16 April 1889 - 25 December 1977) was an English comic actor, film-maker, and composer who rose to fame in the era of silent film. Chaplin became a worldwide icon through his screen persona "the Tramp" and is considered one of the most important figures in the history of the film industry.
His career spanned more than 75 years, from childhood in the Victorian era until a year before his death in 1977, and encompassed both creative genius and controversy.
    Music by Max Richter.

People always compare Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, but in reality, their styles of comedy were so unique and brilliant in their own ways that we can't really compare them. I like to look at them as equals.

Sometimes someone is born into this world whose very existence is the definition of art -uplifting, intense. Words like genius and innovative fall short. he was incomparable, no other person could he be measured against.. in a way a superman.

I’m reading his autobiography right now. I’m convinced that he was truly one of a kind….like a messiah of the silver screen, a shooting star that left a trail across all of time. His life and his art were unparalleled. To rise from such extreme poverty to literally become the most famous man on the face of the earth is one of the most amazing stories of all time. His talent and genius transcends time. People will still watch in awe and wonder 1000 years from now.

People often wonder why Keaton didn't get the same recognition as Chaplin. Simple; Chaplin was first. By 1916, after just two years making short films he was the most famous man on the planet and considered the funniest. Keaton was kind of like George Harrison, doing great things after someone else had already conquered the world. Anyway, they were both great physical comedians but totally different. I love Keaton but Chaplin makes me laugh more.

What would this great visionary think of this world now?

Chaplin lived through some pretty tough historical times himself. Two devastating world wars, the 1918 Spanish Flu outbreak, a worldwide depression, political and social strife and upheavals. The more things change, the more they stay the same. If he were around today, he would still be a visionary and still be making great films, no doubt about it.
