My dear friend, I believe you do not understand the difference between present tense and past tense. But I shall educate you on this topic.
Tense: A tense is the time that a sentence displays. Usually formed when using a verb or any specific type of verbs.
Present Tense, is used to describe an event that takes place in the present (what is happening now).
Eg: The boy plays with the ball.
Past Tense, is used to refer to things that have happened before in the past.
Eg: The boy played with the ball
Sentence Interpretation: Based on the fact you sent this after 2016, the events that take place are not in such year. So now we can confirm that. We know this sentence is in the past. Therefore, we use the verb "was" to define the tense. So with all the information, the upgraded sentence would be:
I was 3 years old in 2016.
