    one tip, if you can't get enough rise, try dropping the bed, at 15 or 30 degrees, then you have enough of a 'ceiling' to rise the shot, also you tilt up, to neutralise this movement; one other 'hack' is to mount the camera 90 degrees, on the second tripod mount, and use shift, which becomes rise\fall in this orientation.{hint: the back rotates, so you can keep your landscape or portrait orientation of the film}.

      Thanks for the tips!! Hadn’t considered putting the camera on its side!
      The other idea I had was to tilt the camera up slightly then use tilt on the front and rear standards to make the film and lens planes vertical again. Still, was just the first time out with it (and using a view camera overall) - heaps of learning still to come I bet!!!

      @@JarredSpec yes, its called in-direct rise, and is useful for getting big shifts when the standard movement isn't enough, but YES, using the shift as rise is an actual design feature of these "press" cameras, to get around some of the limitations due to these formats size and compactness, there is a bushing for the tripod (in your "my new horseman" video, it shows it, behind the leather hand strap). BUT beware of lenses you use, they have something called "cone of coverage", for each format; 6x9, 4x5, 5x7 and 8x10 the lenses can cover many formats, IF the coverage is large enough, and also movement possibility (without vignetting) is a crucial element of lens selection to, as well as lens design, for eg, a f 5.6 lens, like my 65 and 90 mm SWD Fujinon lenses are hourglass shaped, so may not fit some cameras, I have a Sinar F2 monorail, so not so bad (inside the lens board, standard, or the bellows space, esp. between the front and back standard), also the focus track may be too small to allow much focus past infinity, so this affects usefulness of the lens on YOUR system to.

      @andyvan5692 cheers for the info! What’s the diameter of the rear element of the Fuji 65mm? Have been eyeing them up as a replacement for the Topcor 65mm as it’s not in the best condition (and only f/7).

    • @andyvan5692

      @@JarredSpec the rear element is 63mm dia.; the front elements' filter thread is 67mm and the whole lens (including shutter Copal 0 and 5mm thick sinar lens board) is 70mm thick, if that helps, also for a suggestion there is lens wraps around, Velcro for most, but now there are magnetic ones, I have it for protection of my lenses in the bag, a worthwhile investment.

      I’ve shot Ektar on 35mm in the past, but not on 120. I’ve banned myself from buying film this year as I have fridge compartments overflowing. Mainly Portra, Gold, Provia - a lil Velvia and Delta + Acros for B&W. Need to get out and shoot more!! :)

    Nice to see someone using the Horseman VH. I just got one for the 6x9 ratio. I love the small size of it but if you have chunky fingers, I can see it being difficult to work with (thankfully I have smaller hands). Also, good to know about the limitations in movements (particularly rise) when using wider lenses. From the images you took, I found the composition with the tracks leading away to be my favorite as I liked all of the yellow color in the foliage as well.

    • @JarredSpec
      @JarredSpec  16 дней назад +1

      Thanks Harold! Yeah for me it was the big negative combined with the movements and focal lengths available. I had a Fuji GSW690III previously which was great, but more limiting than I wanted for what I shoot.
      The amount of shift available isn’t extreme either. Enough to correct small changes in composition but not enough if you’re a couple of meters off where you need to be - have yet to test how much I can expand my depth of field with tilt too.

    Hi Jarred
    Great to see this video of the VH in action! You mentioned the difficulty in seeing the image on the ground glass for focusing when outdoors. Richard Massey's channel on youtube has a video on the VH. In it he talks about using the reflex viewer for the VH. I got one for my VH and love using it. It provides a view that is enlarged, and is in the normal orientation. They aren't expensive.
    To avoid repeating those oversights eg forgetting to remove the dark slide etc, I am working on a list to read over when setting up for a photo. Yes... a learning curve ;-)

      Yeah I think I’ve seen his video about it. I have been tempted about getting my hands on one but don’t have the funds set aside for any more toys for the short term - might look at one later in the year.
      Focussing wasn’t tooooo bad with the 65mm f/7, I might just use a spare jersey as a dark cloth in the meantime hah

    great video, but a question, is the horseman VH a 6x9 camera or a 4x5" press, like the toyo 45A/D models, as they all look similar, and as they all take different lens boards (linhof technika are 4x5", but many are out there, even linhof do a 5x7" board {for Copal 1 shutters}); but this doesn't fit smaller cameras, so its important to know what they take, as the lenses are the important thing here, can you take an 'hourglass' f 5.6 for eg, or are you limited to 150/210 for bellows and extension bed limitations?

    • @JarredSpec
      @JarredSpec  15 дней назад +1

      It’s 6x9 max as far as I can tell. The only backs I could find that fit this are the 6x9 and a 6x7 back (I have both). The lens boards on this are tiny (80x80mm) along with the opening at the front of the bellows. I have a 210mm Nikkor 5.6 that fits but that’s at max bellows extension (and I have to extend the rear standard backwards too. I’ve seen a few extended lens boards on eBay for it if I wanted to explore longer focal lengths though.

      @JarredSpec  15 дней назад

      Hey, thanks! This was the first time with the Horseman - I hadn’t realised there was a GFX adaptor that would fit it. Have seen one out there for 4x5 but not for this. Not sure I’ll explore this for the time being while I’m still learning the way of the view camera :)

    • @JarredSpec
      @JarredSpec  15 дней назад

      @lordmonkey3285 ahhh must be that same one - Fotodiox brand or something like that. I’d feel a lil icky attaching to the GFX to the back of the Horseman to be fair 😂
      I’d have concerns about the two Topcor lenses I have resolving enough detail for the digital sensor too - the Nikkor 210 probably would have a better go at it though

    HEY, at 11:53 you forgot to close the lens 🙂 as the shutter is held open for focusing, so you need to CLOSE it, so you can fire the shutter, and not 'flash' the film.

      @@JarredSpec Pricey yes but I think makes for a better photographer long term as each photo has to count and that then gets moved back across to GFX. I shoot less photos now with GFX due to size on HDD

      @tonys3112 yeah hard drive space is something I’ve addressed recently by moving to a NAS setup for storage. Picked up an Epson V800 scanner too which is going to contribute to the storage needs I think. One of these 6x9s on a test scan got into massive file territory! Nearly 180 megapixels!
