    15:21 after watching it makes alot of sense why they did, its a talking head coming of age story taking entirely in one location, cinephiles love that XD

    The reason Rebecca doesn't feel quite Hitchcockian enough is because of the influence of its producer, David O. Selznick. This was Hitchcock's first Hollywood film and he wasn't really accustomed to producers who were as hands on as Selznick, who produced Gone With the Wind which came out the year before. To me this is really more Selznick's film than Hitchcock's. It probably won best picture at the Oscars because of Selznick was such a big player in Hollywood at the time. You mentioned the influence that The Killing had on Reservoir Dogs. You should definitely pick up the Criterion edition of John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle. The Killing was definitely inspired by this film, both of which have the same lead actor, Sterling Hayden. A great film, as is The Killing.

      Thanks for that insight! I've never dug much into Rebecca besides a one-time watch. I'll for sure look out for The Asphalt Jungle

    Its impossible to get all of the Criterion's... unless your name is Daisuke Beppu.

      My collection is pretty decent approaching triple digits soon but only particular films by particular directors but I'm quite sure there's people in the world with probably around the same if not a bigger collection than Daisuke because not everyone shows off what they have to youtube, just saying but Daisuke collection is impressive.

    Really enjoyed this video, man. I watched Seven Samurai a couple years back for the first time and it was so worth the wait. Long as hell but worth the wait. Princess Bride was another recent watch. Another very enjoyable one. Paths Of Glory is probably one of my favorite Criterions. Love Kirk Douglas! Night Of The Living Dead was awesome. Criterion is probably my favorite company. Their style is just so classy.

    Great stuff! Like how you talk about films, in a casual, yet enthusiastic and educational manner. Just a small correction btw: There are 6 feature films not included in the Bergman set to my knowledge. So it isn’t his complete catalogue unfortunately. I think some of those are quite hard to find.

    • @CinephileStudios
      @CinephileStudios  4 года назад

      Thanks so much! I was told that it doesn't have them. I guess I never got clarity about it, since it's hard to figure out just how many there are, with the short films included. I've just never taken the time to research!

    7:07 I think that's the main thing Hollywood needs to learn nowadays, something doesn't need to be 2 and a half hours to be considered an epic

    Nice collection. I only have two movies on Criterion (The Royal Tenenbaums and To Be Or Not To Be), because of how expensive they are. But I do hope to pick up the "It Happened One Night" Blu at some point.
    And yeah, I've long had a problem with Criterion's resistance to licensing animated films. Nobody is asking them to release Disney films. It's movies like "The Thief and the Cobbler" (with its multiple cuts and legendary status) and "Grave of the Fireflies" that are perfectly suited to Criterion and fit perfectly within their mission statement. They have no problem releasing widely available and easy to find films like "The Breakfast Club" and yet something like "Allegro Non Troppo" is too much to ask?

    • @CinephileStudios
      @CinephileStudios  4 года назад

      It’d be perfect for them to release animes that have out-of-print or strange US releases, like Akira, Metropolis, or Paprika. It’s disappointing that Shout Factory and Kino seem to have the same mindset with animation as well. GKids at least has been doing some of the leg work, but there’s tons of animation that deserves better releases and special features.

    • @MrCoat
      @MrCoat 4 года назад +1

      I've been really impressed with GKIDS's handling of the Ghibli titles. The restorations look beautiful and the bonus features are great (some carried over from the Disney releases). "Grave of the Fireflies" is one of the few Ghibli films GKIDS doesn't own home media rights to and it's been jumping from one lesser known distributor to the next for several years now. It's the kind of movie that desperately deserves the Criterion treatment.
      Some of Ralph Bakshi's work also seems tailor made for Criterion. I remember they once teased an image of "Fritz the Cat", which led many to believe they were releasing that movie. But it turned out to be just a hint for "Crumb." It's such a landmark animated film, though, and deserves better than a bare bones MGM DVD released almost two decades ago and now out of print. Criterion appears to have a good relationship with MGM, so they should really work something out.

      Scoring it is ok but too many jump cuts is what I'm not too find of, not this video but I've seen some videos where they jump cut for no reason at all
