    Almost Happy New Year. Barry Harris also advocates playing arpeggios through the scale (he distinguishes between naming 7th chord arpeggiation and triad). I've done these exercises before, but relearning them within Barry's framework taught me the importance of playing these in time--with no rests--straight 8ths or triplets. You can learn how to hear over the bar line and odd grouping syncopation. There's always a rhythmic component, even with technique exercises like these--and you can leverage rhythm to make the technical side effective.

    When applying this to a song, there are often key changes so having the box positions means that they aren’t always useful. How would you apply this to a tune?

      Great question! The box positions make you think about the arpeggios in a different way than just starting on the root via the low E string. It forces you to think about the shape and notes if you do it right. Combining this with the other two exercises will then give you the ability to hear and see the arpeggio in every way across fret board so you can either play it directly or use it as a starting point for language or lines
