Haydn is the man. Cllear influences from Bach and Scarlatti and simultaneously daring and innovative! I wonder if Hummel or Field were influenced by this piece? The heavily ornamented first movement suggests their musical leanings 40 years before they came to be.

Haydn must be my favorite piano composer.

Wow, Pogorelich's performance of this sonata has changed my perception of it. It's nice to go back to basics and let the music breathe.

Is there a performance of Pogorelich playing this on RUclips? The pianist in this performance is Olbertz.

@@erika6651 x Hi. Yes, I know. I was saying I am used to Pogorelich’s performance: Yes, you can find it on RUclips and if you listen, you’ll be quite surprised.

@@danal81 I just gave it a listen and Pog's Allegro Moderato veers more towards the Allegro! Obertz gives it a mature outlook. I wonder if they both performed the Adagio a touch fast . . . RUclips is such a treasure is it not?

@@erika6651 Pogorelich’s performance is anything but conventional, and I am sure a lot of people are not going to like it. In my opinion, he manages to stay on the esthetic side in spite of performing too fast.

Any historical-performance oriented folks share their insight on Olbertz's interpretation here at 05:13? The triadic melody there is marked staccatissimo, but played sustained. I would have liked to hear the staccatissimo there myself, would be in keeping with Haydn's playful style.

The edition used in the video has been edited quite a lot; those staccatissimo markings are not marked by Haydn. He does mark staccatissimo in various parallel spots though, so it's not an unfounded editorial choice. I agree with your preference for a more biting articulation there (and throughout, really--though this is a wonderful performance).
