  • We can appreciate refined luxury in a pick-up, but it’s not what we really what in a truck. What is form without function? What good is a 4WD truck if it can’t take you out to get the job done and then even farther out for serious backcountry adventures?
    The Ram Rebel received major upgrades for 2019 and we know it remains unchanged for 2020. Here are is a full review of all the significant upgrades, and our off-road driving test as we take the Ram Rebel up the Coast Mountains outside Whistler BC.
    Thanks to Jarod Balfour of 5thGenRam for joining the adventure and sharing footage;

    Compared to the Ram 1500, are you willing to give up some towing and payload numbers to get better off-road performance? And what about the styling - do you love it, hate it, or maybe you don’t care as long as the truck does the job?

    • @bravo9890
      @bravo9890 4 года назад +5

      Yes ide be willimg to give up 2500 lbs of towing for some more aggressive air suspension.

    • @adamharriger5193
      @adamharriger5193 4 года назад +7

      Still tows plenty for a 1/2 ton truck- if you actually tow over the Rebels ratings, or even just at them very often you need a 3/4 ton. Love the interior, wish the exterior was more aggressive. If only I could get the Trail Boss body with a rebel interior and powertrain I’d be set.

      Gm has the at4 but the ram is nicer. I think ram is just a better built vehicle now than gm. It seems when dodge does something, they do it right. Like the challenger and charger. The TRX will probably be pretty good as well.

      Yes, 1/2 ton trucks have dangerously high tow ratings these days. I was a lifelong Chevy/GMC guy until 2011 when i test drove a Ram 1500. I was blown away by the interior, and the way it drove. That truck gave me 225,000 miles of trouble free performance. You ford and GM guys, there is a reason Ram is gaining so much market share. These new gen trucks are great.

      I dont really tow much other than light boats. I do more off road and this would be ideal for me other than price tag but would fine used one alittle cheaper. People knock on mopars but they are getting more reliable each year. All trucks have there faults and recalls thats part of the growing pains

    Coming from someone that had a 1st gen Rebel. Don’t opt for airride if you’re truly off-roading or want a reliable source of daily transportation. I had to swap mine to traditional steel coil suspension after numerous failures. And no help from FCA.

    The Rebel comes with 277/70 R18 tires. That equates to 33" x 10.8" not 32" like mentioned in the video multiple times. The Chevy and GMC offroad packages come with 32" o.d. tires. Almost all Ram's come with 33's it has been that way for a long time.

    I had a 17 rebel, loved it, but wanted a few of the up grades, so I traded it in and got the 2020. I love this one as well, but I opted not to get the air suspension after reading many negative reviews, even though i never had an issue. The 17 rode better at highway speeds as the air system lowered the vehicle for a better aerodynamic and tighter suspension. I probably shouldn't drive as fast as I often did on the highway, so maybe it's a good thing.

  • @SDR0505

    Eversince the 2000s, Ram has always been on top when it comes to design and even improvements in other areas. I love how its so proportional in design. I love the Rebel.. i have the 4x4 big horn but i don't do any towing, so should have went with Rebel but i think regular 1500 had more cash back incentives to buy but i think you can always go the traditional route if you want to make the 1500 an offroad beast.

      Another 2016 Rebel checking in. Absolutely love it. For my purposes there is no other option that offers a better value. Even recently I've looked at 5th gens and a couple other non Ram options like 2nd gen Raptors and even some HD trucks and there is really nothing worth trading for personally. I think I'll be keeping my Gen 1 Rebel for a long time. BTW, I've had zero issues with my air suspension, or zero issue at all for that matter besides replacing a tail light assembly due to some of the leds in the blinker going out.

    I have a 2020 ram rebel but I replaced the shocks for the falcons and the way it drives is 100% better even on road.. I get less body roll, less nose dive. The trucks feels more stable and planted. Also, it leveled the truck so it’s taller... I
    Think this is something everyone who owns a ram rebel
    Needs to Do To get the real performance. Before the shocks were to soft for any fast speed off-road and on road .

    I own a 2020 Ram Rebel. What they don't tell you here is the transmission pan on this truck is made of hard plastic that will crack like an eggshell if it comes into hard contact with a rock. Consequently its a good precaution to purchase an additional steel skid plate to protect the transmission pan from Dethloff engineering.

    2022 rebel:
    The good, interior is very nice. The back fold up seats and flat floor for my dogs is great. In floor storage is a great use of space.
    The bad, the 12” infotainment system is glitchy/slow at times, and/or screen goes black. I’ve heard of the black screen being a problem. Mine so far has only done this 1 time. When it did go black I pulled over to a safe place and performed a ignition off and on cycle a couple times with a waiting period in between. It came back on.
    There is a TSB for the off road coolant temp gauge and it reads 0. The main engine coolant temp gauge works fine but for the cost of this truck, I want it to work.
    The 5.7 is good. But for being able to tow as much as it can, there needs to be an option for the larger engine. It just leaves much to be desired honestly. Come on Ram put the 392 in the Rebel Please!
    Be aware of the hemi tick. I’ve heard supposedly the long term fix is using high quality 5w30 synthetic engine oil. Time will tell. Note: if you have bad lifters they need replacement. Oil will not fix worn/failed parts.
    Aftermarket parts: when I got the truck it already had factory running boards, they fit nicely and look good. They are not meant for rock slides/protection.
    Has the 6” Rough country lift. The shocks that come with it rides rough, but this brand is known for this. Plan on getting the more expensive Vertex 2.5 adjustable coil overs with reservoir. Should ride better.

    Great video Perry! It's a hard decision between the two trucks. I think I would honestly take the Rebel. I would add the mopar performance exhaust as shown on the TFLTruck channel on their Rebel Rouser project truck. The 2020 interior blows away GMC's Denali by half a football field and blows Ford's out of the water as well. I agree on the front locker!!! Finally I wish you could get something to spice up that same old, long in the tooth 5.7 Hemi to add some spice on the Rebel. :)

      @@endocry others haven't really given them a reason to up it. That motor still has power left in it. The problem is the piston rings are moved so close to the end of the piston to help with emissions. That sh>t needs to go, lower the rings back down, slightly bigger cam, slightly bigger intake and throttle body, and you have over 450 hp and torque. Thats close to fords Godzilla 7l (420 ci) numbers with a 345 ci hemi. Then they could give the 392 a boost in power. No other company is making them change it. If trump gets elected this year, you bet your ass dodge is going to step it up. They're afraid of the communist getting in and slapping on fines for global warming crap.

      Stating the Rebel was not a comparison to the Raptor is a cop out, trying to compare a Rebel with it’s extras to other half tons without those extras is misleading. Rebel is a solid, very respectable truck, but it must be compared to the Raptor to truly see a real comparison.

    you can get a front camera on the 2020 model year for the rebel, no one has a disconnection front sway bar for independent front suspension, and although a front locker would be nice it makes sense that Ram would reserve the absolute best offroading capability for the Power Wagon which is based on a Heavy Duty frame

    • @4WDMagazine
      @4WDMagazine  4 года назад +9

      BDS makes great product and the drive train should be able to handle the 35" tires as long as you are not doing any hardcore off-roading. When you test drive it, take some sharp corners to check the sway and some hard braking to see if the nose dives. Drive a regular Rebel to compare. I like the Power Wagon for a stock off-road vehicle - no mods required - and a 3/4 ton frame means it's solid. I like the Raptor for off-road but I'm not to keen on the highway - too floaty for me. You're probably tired of hearing this but it really depends on what you plan to tow/haul with the truck.

    Neutered payload and towing is unacceptable. Give higher ground clearance and the tighter (rougher) ride with stiffer tall springs to get respectable numbers back.

      @@haithamal-hashmi7135 Sir, no disrespect, but any man claiming to have testicles WILL NEVER, EVER, call his truck a car.. You are referring to your truck as a car which immediately told me you are definitely from another planet, should you have a few moments today lookup the difference between the two vehicles and seeing as you took the time to learn several different languages perhaps now is the chance to learn something new as and how this conversation pertains to the North American truck culture.

    Looks great inside and out. I own one. Mechanical is not quality. Issues wth key gobs Air suspensions are the worst idea ever. They freeze up
    MDS fuel saver is causing cam failures. Look it up folks a lot of money be careful FAC is no a company you want to buy from. Horror stories for customer care are rampant around here. I have owned 3 new 3 used 1 eco diesel. Never again the quality Is not there. I’m going to Toyota

    They can change the name to RAM but it is still a Chrysler unreliable product like all the rest, they only way for them to get sale going is by working on fancy gadgets that usually stop to work between two to three years. These truck are only good to lease.
