Oh you guys got the apocalypse ending. There's actually 3 different endings.
OK, thank you! I thought I was going nuts cuz I specifically remember him being back at S-mart at the end! Had no idea there were alternate versions.
This is the one I saw at the cinema on original release.
@@andrewdavidscott8731 this was not used. It was an alternate ending that they didn't use.
I prefer the S-Mart ending!
@@roryotoole3279 Yeah I remember Shivers magazine mentioning it. But this is the ending I saw in the cinema on original release. Never saw the S-Mart ending until years later.
This film made much less money because no one knew it was an evil dead movie due to the name, the title Sam Raimi originally wanted was mediEVILdead. I could not be more angry they didn’t choose that name
Non-fans didnt watch the movie because it was obvious it was a sequel to movies they never saw, and fans didnt saw the movie because they didnt know it was a sequel...
It was a non-win situation.
Also, some fans didnt like the movie when it cameo out because of how drastic the shift in tone was...Evil Dead 2 had some comedy, but still a hard R rated horror movie, this was a PG13 comedy.
@@Jose-se9pu and some how was still rated R
@@Jose-se9pu Your first point is incorrect, because it was NOT obvious that Army Of Darkness was a sequel. You just have to watch the trailers of the time: ruclips.net/video/4vvJCg2JsIc/видео.html
The theatrical ending is SO much better!
“Hail to the king, baby.”
I prefer the original by far. But if you watch this movie you should honestly see them both!
This is the theatrical ending, for the UK.
@@avodaith I watched this in the UK when it came out and it had the S mart ending. i didn't see this ending until i bought it on VHS
Yeah I saw it in theater when it came out and we all loved the ending.
It probably depends which one you saw first. I saw the movie with this post-apocalyptic ending first and loved it. The S-Mart ending was as an extra feature on the VHS and I was really glad that it was not the other way around. Haven't watched the S-Mart version since.
Ash vs Evil Dead should be somewhere on your watch list. It's definitely worth it.
OMG YES!
Agreed
Yes!
Yes for sure! Would love to see their reactions to each episode. Very easy to digest with short episodes too.
Ash vs Evil Dead is a follow up to the movies, and on par with the movies as well....me thinks. ;)
I also vote the theatrical cut is a little better and has the S-mart deadite
Watch Peter Jackson's BRAINDEAD before he got famous with Lord of the Rings. It has some of the best practical effects I've ever seen in a movie, and not one pixel of CGI.
amazing movie, hope they watch it too
YES! My favorite! Also, it desperately needs a Blu Ray release!
Yes! It's the movie I love showing to people who haven't seen it. So over the top and gross. (also called Dead Alive in the US) But it MUST be the unrated version! The R version takes out so much
Yes great choice!
Yes! An absolute banger. I think they'd love it so much.
"...why couldn't they make a follow up?"
They did. The series Ash vs The Evil Dead.
Making a tv show 23 years later isn't a " follow up"!
@@philipocallaghan it literally is a continuation of the story by the same people... so I think it does count as a follow up.
@@thatwastheweekthatwaswasit1707 To follow something up is to do it sooner , rather than later.
However... in this case... A sequel (also called a follow-on or follow-up) is a narrative, documental, or other work of literature, film, theatre, or music that continues the story of, or expands upon, some earlier work.
:)
It's so good!! All the old shit they are revisiting nowadays this is the best. Amazing follow up to the Dead series. The show had some of the craziest grossest shit I ever seen! It is truly continuing The Evil Dead universe. Bruce is in fine form here, really at his best. When Lee Majors showed playing Ash's dad I was in heaven. The last shot of the series is the best farewell to an iconic character like Ash.
Klaatu Barada Nikto is a line from The Day the Earth Stood Still.. one of the best classic sci-fi films.
And it has been worked into many other films as a tribute. Sure wish I could remember some of them! (Well, besides this one.)
@@Johnny_Socko Tron is one of the them. It's printed on the wall in Alan's cubicle.
The names of the skiff guards in Return of the Jedi.
It’s done in such a funny way, too!
Wrong ending. I like when he was back a S-Mart shooting the witch.
Witch: "I'll swallow your soul"
Ash: "Come get some."
Lady I'm afraid I'm gonna have to ask you to leave the store.
@@streetstroller hard to find a better delivery of one-liners than Bruce Campbell!
"Who the hell are you?!"
"Name's Ash. Housewares."
Me: "Gimme some sugar, baby."
Wife: "Come get some."
Honestly, the entire S-Mart sequence is brilliant. I actually hate that these guys missed out on it. I'm perplexed how anyone can think the alternate/apocalypse ending is superior. (Maybe because it's more of a downer, so it seems "grittier" or people think it has greater artistic integrity somehow.)
Ashe’s superpower is confidence and high school AP chemistry. He’s not a scientist, he’s not an engineer, he’s not in the special forces but he has that confidence as if he were
7.4 Easily. I met Bruce at a convention. My buddy took a sly pic of him and he saw him. He shouted, "Yeah! Get that pic baby!" Good fun.
You guys MUST watch Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive(aka Braindead)! You’ll fucking love it!!
This and also Re-Animator.
vouch for this
Oh yeah. No question about it!
Oh yeah, this for sure!
Great film so bizarre and then he went on to do LOTR which was totally different
I might have missed y’all saying you were watching a different cut of the movie but the theatrical cut has a much happier ending that aligns with ash vs evil dead.
This is the UK theatrical cut, We did not get the S-MART ending until the 2 disc DVD.
We sometimes get bleaker endings like this and The Descent because we are not so optimistic and find it cheesy.
@@xKynOx This is def the ending I saw at the cinema on its original release.
The UK cut has more scenes and the directors preferred ending but still has scenes cut by the studio that are only in the tv cut.
@@Thecatdrums3 Yes there were different lines/scenes in this reaction throughout. Thx for the UK cut explanation.
This is the version Europe got. I remember that ending and thought the American one is kinda bad.
You guys should react to Ash vs. Evil Dead at some point. It's a great continuation of the series.
Yes
I actually laughed so hard at one point I had a hard time breathing. That hasn't happened in years. I think it was that crazy morgue scene.
Absolutely
That show was canceled way too soon.
@@ajclements4627 it was still awesome though
The theatrical cut is better, in my opinion. "Hail to the king, baby".
Tv cut slaps harder
Shaun’s creepy whisper to Tom, and Tom’s reaction 😒🤣
The S-mart ending makes more sense as Ashe is telling the story to someone else and giving himself more prowess and knowledge than he actually has.
"klaatu barada nikto" Great shout out to the classic Day the Earth stood still. God I adore Bruce Campbell.. He's always entertaining to watch. "This must have had a literally insane budget" Err, no actually. There is a making of on RUclips somewhere and my god they worked hard on getting this whole battle sequence to work on sod all money compared to other such movies
There is another ending where he returns to the present, at his old job which continues to ash vs the evil dead
That's the ending i know.
I absolutely want to see you react to Ash vs Evil Dead. It's wild!
If nobody mentiponed it already: "Klatuu verata nekto" is a quote from "The Day the Earth stood still". :)
After "The Princess Bride" this is probably the most quoted movie in contemporary U.S. cinema culture.
Are you serious? No way.
Airplane is probably the most quoted. That's where you get "Don't call me Shirley." .. "Black, like my men." ... "Roger, Roger. What's your vector, Victor".
Star Wars is probably the most quoted.
I never hear Star Wars or Airplane quoted. "This is my boomstick!" "Give me some sugar, baby" and "Shop smart, shop 'S' mart" I hear all the time. Also, "Honey, you got real ugly" and "Come get some!"
what about the godfather films?
They did make a follow up. A tv series called Ash vs Evil Dead. It ran for 3 seasons and it’s currently on Netflix. It follows from the S-Mart ending of this film. It’s one of my favorite shows and definitely worth a watch
Well technically most of the comics are still canon, and in the comics they explain all three endings. He travels the multiverse a lot trying to get home. Because he messes up the spell a lot in one way or another. Sometimes the words. Sometimes an ingredient of the spell, sometimes something interfering. But all three endings happen the comics explain the s mart ending was the last ending, when ash finally got home.
I still have no idea how they did the effect of the multiple Ash's stepping out of the mirror shards 7:30. It's so well done.
They did it very carefully
Return of the living dead is a must watch.
OMG yes.
As others have said, this is one of several endings they filmed and I believe different countries had different ones, the 'canon' ending was one where he actually got back to his own time and went back to work at S-Mart. The series 'Ash v Evil Dead' (which you really, really need to watch) used the canon ending as its starting point.
"First you wanna kill me, now you wanna kiss me.......(spits out grape seeds).....blow." Best line ever...
My favorite is "good, bad, I'm the one with the gun"
"Good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun." is the best line, but it's only in one version. In the other edit he says "I ain't so good."
When he pushes that guy and says "Get the fuck out of my face" is a close second best, though.
@@johnzientek36 "Hey, what's that on your face?"
This movie has so many best lines!
This might be a hot take, but this is my favorite of the evil dead franchise.
Same
Same, love the whole trilogy but AoD always been my favorite.
Same
I greatly prefer the S Mart ending primarily because it perfectly sets us up for Ash vs. The Evil Dead TV series.
You should also watch the 2013 remake of evil dead!! Many people consider it to be better than the first one and one of the best remakes ever made
Agree, its superb.
@@jasonvoorhees3124 yep, much better than the original
It's a really good movie, but I definitely wouldn't place it above the original.
@@joshuanelson6795 why? I respect your opinion, but why?
Although a well made and brutal horror movie, I still like the original better.
What the hell is this ending?!? Totally different from my DVD, which has the only ending I’ve ever seen!
I'm 2 months late to this party but this is the Director's Cut ending. There are 3 cuts of Army of Darkness, I believe; the Theatrical Cut, the Director's Cut & the International Cut. Only the Director's Cut has the apocalypse ending, the studio mandated a "happier" ending so they shot the S-Mart scene that most people are familiar with.
I've always loved that line where he says "get the f*ck outta my face" after returning from getting the book. Sums up how I start to feel about half way through my work day.
This was also meant as a bit of a homage to the old Ray Harryhausen stop motion films like Jason and the Argonauts.
Definitely watch Ash vs Evil Dead!
Yeah, it hurt my heart a bit when they said it riffed on "old" movies like Willow. I thought the Harryhausen influence was obvious.
If you're a fan of Sam Raimi's films, you should try out Darkman. It's pretty great and has Liam Neeson pre Star Wars
Great movie. I actually like all 3.
darkman a awesome superhero movie
Liam Neeson was in several movies before Darkman. An 80’s fantasy/action movie called Krull is an example.
Pre-Schindler's List
This is actually the extended version of the movie. It's a bit messier in terms of pacing than the original. From what I can gather, it had different editors.
I use to know Bruce and his wife. Lost touch over the years and, when we all got together for dinner there wasn’t a lot of shop talk but, I did confess to him that I always wanted to play one of the “ swallow your souls” possessed people. We just laughed about it. He is just good people.
You guys should react to Drag Me To Hell, it's a good movie from Sam Raimi, very underrated.
Seconded.
I love the shot where the camera is attached to the spear as the demon girlfriend is attacking Ash, so energetic and creative
Guys, next you gotta do a MINI chapter, racting to the other ending, before you start ASH vs THE EVIL DEAD.
Do a review of Jackie Chan's old movies, like the first Police Story.
This is all very nostalgic and I love it, ha! I hope they do some of those man
Oh shit.. this wasn't the "theatrical cut".. yeah that ones way better.. this is the "Original cut".. not as good, totally different ending. Sorry guys.
You've watched the Original ending here. It was changed for the theatrical version where Ash does get back home and kills another Deadite in his supermarket.
Whenever I watch these Evil Dead movies they always remind me of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. In which Bruce Cambell played Autolycus the thief. Rami loves casting Cambell
You can see how this evolved into the Hercules TV show leading to the ridiculous episodes like Hercules in a dance competition😛
Ted Raimi (Sam's nephew or cousin if I remember) is also in the cast, playing 2 different characters (12:27 "you can count on my steel", & 16:30 "where's Henry the Red?", he's in Sam's Spider-Man trilogy (at the Bugle) & worked with Bruce on Hercules & Xena too
The theatrical ending is much happier, and the follow up they made is the TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead
Some of the inspiration for the scene with the skeletons came from the 1963 Jason and the Argonauts.
You guys should definitely do the 2013 Remake too at some point before doing the show if you do that. Maybe watch the original film with the 2013 as well idk though there’s no real need to watch the first one anymore but that’s really up to you guys.
PS. This film has 2 endings. Seems you guys ended up with the non canon ending.
There’s Horror-Comedy and then there’s Comedy-Horror. This is the latter along with Shaun of the Dead, but this includes elements of fantasy and adventure too.
I totally forgot about that alternate ending, I was so confused for a second, haha.
The Adventure of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 2005- Full Movie HD what movie name
I was thinking : I can't remember another movie review
where you both laughed as much as here ...
Still waiting for that Dead Alive (Brain dead) by peter jackson Reaction :D!.
I think that movie is very violence right?
GOD YES!!!!!
@@metamajdi6358 it is violent, but in the goofiest, most awesome of ways!
"Klaatu, Barada, Nikto" is a reference to an older science fiction film classic called "The Day The Earth Stood Stil."
The TV series "Ash vs Evil Dead" is awesome. Old Ash is a hilarious version of the character. It really adds to the franchise.
Watch the ending to the Theatrical cut! Much better ending and it's now the canon ending since the Ash vs Evil Dead show goes with that ending
It was always the canon ending.
This is the teatrical cut. The US one was the one that got changed.
The usual ending is that they use a spell that sends him back to his time and he’s telling the story to a coworker who obviously doesn’t believe him. It’s years after THAT ending that the TV series takes place from.
You guys should watch the Ash vs Evil Dead series, there is so many practical effects
You guys should check out the alternate happy ending, a much better conclusion
The very first Bruce Campbell movie I saw. Also another series I watched in reverse order.
Evil Dead movies become more hilarious and over the top as they go, this is such a fun movie.
Oh no, you watched the Director's Cut. The ending of the theatrical version is superior to this one. .
I'm waiting on your Evil Dead (2013) reaction hehe
"Klaatu barada nikto" is a phrase that originated in the 1951 science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still. It's a great classic film. Obviously Sam Raimi loved it enough to make a reference to it.
You guys really need to read Bruce Campbell's autobiography. He goes into great detail about the making of the Evil Dead films, including how they invented their camera techniques out of need - they couldn't afford to do it otherwise!
16:30 see the skeleton with fleshy eyes? The box cover on Evil Dead 2 was foreshadowing!🤯😂
Me: They're going to laugh like hell at the ending.
Seeing how they watched the original ending for the movie: 0-0
A: "Army of Darkness."
Q: What do you call Cinema Rules viewers who don't subscribe?"
3 new movie proposals: BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE(2018) DEAD MAN DOWN(2013) and THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT(1996). Three very underrated films.
This movie rules. A long-time unstoppable favorite.
This was the alternative ending, there is another where he gets home and they eventually followed up with Ash VS the Evil Dead series. Its awesome, they managed to dial back the cornie slapstick and dialed up the cool.
I love the part Shaun is "that looks like a p...." and Tom face is like "jesus during this days, i dont know what that is anymore" hahahaah
6:36 the location is Vasquez State Park in California.. It is a heavily filmed location in movies.. Mostly space/sci-fi and westerns. It was use as early as 1935 Werewolf of London.
For me the order is;
- Evil Dead (2013)
- The Evil Dead 2
- Army of Darkness
- The Evil Dead (I just don't think the original film stands out as much as the others. It's not scary nor funny. I do like it though, don't get me wrong. They're all fun movies in their own right!)
I feel like this is one of the few franchises where I like the later parts more then the original. I still hope that one day we get a sequel to Evil Dead 2013 or a crossover movie with Ash (although considering the serious tone of 2013 vs the slapstick of Ash's series I don't know how it would work other then simple cameo's)
I had never seen this movie before, but there looked to be two references to older movies. 1) the words spoken to the book was from the 1950s move 'The day the Earth stood still' and 2) the army of the dead (skeletons) was a tribute (imo) to the stop action technique in the Jason and the Argonauts from 1963.
Oh, forgot to mention lady in a cage with James Caan and Olivia de Havilland.😁
You guys watched the Director's Cut ending... Y'all gotta see the Theatrical ending.
This is how I was introduced to evil dead since my brother and I were young. I love this movie haha.
Now, you guys need to see the series, Ash vs. Evil Dead. Either in your own time or on the the channel. It's a great continuation.
I was so confused when the bucket fell on Ash's head during the windmill fight, as I had just watched this movie and didn't see that. But then when the move had the different ending, I realized that you guys were watching the directors cut version. In the theatrical version, he wakes up in the correct time, returns to S-Mart, and fights one last deadite. The movie is also about 4 minutes shorter in the theatrical version.
The first film I saw in the Trilogy. A tv channel had a free preview with limited commercials. It was as great as I imagined! Very different from the first two, but still great. Crazy fun!!!
I know it's already been said, but while this is a hilarious ending.....this is the non-canonical ending. The true, canon ending has him going back to his time and working at S-Mart where a deadite attacks him, setting up for the series, Ash VS the Evil Dead.
Fun Fact: The words Ash needs to recite "Klaatu Berada Nikto" is the command order by Klaatu to awaken the Robot Gort in the classic 1951 Sci-Fi The Day the Earth Stood Still. Arguably one of the best metaphorical films of humanity's failings ever made. Cheesy at times, but incredibly ahead of its time in thought provoking film making.
Sam Raimi’s brother often has a lot of cameos in his movies. One of my favorite games to play, when watching is to try and spot the brother. Kinda like where’s Waldo.
The look of contempt on Toms face at 8:30 😄
"Klaatu barada nikto" is a reference to "The Day The Earth Stood Still" (1951)
Just what I needed on a cold and stormy Monday night - Groovy
Will you guys be reacting to the Evil Dead remake? That would be gold; I can already picture the looks on your faces!
The series began in 1978 with the short film Within The Woods that Raimi made to shop around and prove he could direct a film. Campbell was also in that. Might be right up you fellas alley.
The guy with a beard who says "You can count on my steel" is Sam Raimi I believe. And the line ""Klaatu verata nikto" is a variation of "Klaatu berada nikto", originally from the sci-fi classic The Day The Earth Stood Still from 1951. This is one of my absolute all time favorite movies.
I higly recommend the movie Bubba Ho-Tep with Bruce Campel as Elvis Presley fighting a mummy at a nursing home.
Wow, that ending shocked me since I'd only seen the theatrical version, lol. Great reaction as always!
Directors cut is a fun watch, but I think the theatrical cut is superior, especially in its pacing and better ending scene with an iconic one-liner. "Hail to the King baby."
When you really think about it, 7 drops is actually more accurate to the year Ash was from. If he took 6 drops, he would've ended up in 1900, but 7 would take him to 2000, which is a lot closer to his own time.
I think most people would rather choose 20 years too late as opposed to 80 years too early.
First R rated movie I saw at the movie theater without parents. Me and a group of other 13 year old boys having the time of our lives... Ah memories 😃
Just based on your discussion about why the ED movies went from Horror to Comedy I think y'all need to check out Bruce Campbell's Autobiography "If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B-Movie Actor" as he essentially discsses this when talking about the making of each movie, which btw is really detailed, he even includes diagrams on some of the DYI stuff they made to pull off various shots in the first ED movie such as the "Evil's" POV shots. Also my favorite version of this movie is the Television cut which has one of my favorite lines in a movie "Good, Bad, I'm the guy with the gun".
Frankly, this was one of the LAST films to rely heavily on stop-motion and miniatures. It was released right before Jurassic Park came along and made stop-motion mostly a thing of the past.
The series Ash Vs. Evil Dead ran for three seasons and picked up from this film, but from the theatrical cut, where Ash returns to the correct time and resumes his job at S-Mart. It's both hilarious and extraordinarily violent.
this was the first of the evil dead franchise that I saw as a kid and this remains my favorite!
The bit where zombie Ash does that weird ululation battle cry is in homage to Xena: Princess Warrior - which Bruce Campbell was in. :)
The version they watched here was the Director's cut. which would explain all the differences from the US Theatrical cut, the UK theatrical cut, the International cut and the TV cut. There was also a German cut but it's not official even though it was released on video there. The Director's cut has Henry the red's army show up nearly towards the end of the battle, this is also in the UK cut. in other versions he shows up about halfway. the Apocalyptic ending was only in the DC and UK version. the tv cut featured a ton of scenes never seen in any of the other films. actually every version of this movie contains scenes that are not featured in other versions. There is a version called The Primitive Screwhead Edition which was a fan project where they took every scene from all the versions and combined them. this version is considered the longest one of them all. this includes deleted and alternate scenes as well. you can still find it available on dvd and blu ray.
In the American version of this movie Ash makes it back to his time.
I think you guys will love the movie Bubba Ho-Tep. Bruce Campbell plays an aged Elvis Presley who is in a nursing home with John F. Kennedy, and they end up fighting an ancient mummy.
Look up the magic words he was supposed to recite to get the book - "Klaatu barada nikto."
Did you know the Cohen brothers worked on early Raimi movies? You can see some of the same quirky Raimi-style camera work in early Cohen movies, such as Raising Arizona.
