- Kenyan President William Ruto recently made a bold statement about the respect that African leaders deserve on the world stage. William Ruto declared that the days of summoning African leaders like children are over. Speaking with Mo Ibrahim at 2023 IGW African Leadership Ceremony, President Ruto declared that African presidents would no longer tolerate being treated like children by world leaders. He emphasized that African leaders are elected by their people and should be treated with the same respect as leaders from any other part of the world. As a fellow East African, I am so proud of how President Ruto has represented the continent and especially Kenya at the Paris Summit this year by putting a well thought-out propositions to restructure the current way in which Africans pay back the money they have borrowed. We pay 8 times more on average than countries in other continents. It was so bold and courageous on how he challenged both the Private sector investors and bring attention to the unfair treatment that Africans face when repaying their debt than the rest of the World.

This is wonderful to see! As a black person in the UK, it gives me such joy to see African leaders stand up to US and Europe. For too long these white majority regions have talked down to Africa and lectured africans as if African thought, culture, beliefs and way of life was somehow inferior to the West. Although not African by birth, I feel such pride to see this generation of African leaders stand up against this Euro-centric approach and say "African problems need African solutions". I pray this continues. It will give black people (who are constantly referred to as "minorities" in especially in Europe) greater self-esteem and a proper sense of identity as Africa takes its rightful place on the world stage. This is in every black person's interest whether they live in Africa or not.

I don't know the figures but The aid they receive is probably a drop in the ocean compared to the debt they are paying back to some of these countries. As an Ethiopian, I was cramped when our African leaders were going in mass to meet single guys like the US man, the Turkey man, the Russia man etc. I was curious to see African leaders treating themselves in better orientation. Now, I hear the thing that I am eagerly looking forward to see from the man I just love to see. I hope our Kenyan brothers and sisters will help this guy to be more empowered.
But don't forget that Erdoğan is the first and only statesman who said at an UN assembly that "the world is bigger than 5". By this he meant that all countries in the world should have equal rights when it comes to global decisions and that it is unfair that only a few countries decide the fate of the whole world. Comments like this is one of the reasons why the West doesn't likes him. He is also the only statesman who has publicly criticized the colonial powers for their crimes against Africans.
When it comes to Africa, he is probably the most sincere and he cares a lot about Africans, as we know from many of his reports on television. What Turkey is doing in Africa is something that happens between equal partners or friends. Turkey doesn't plunder but educates, builds hospitals, wells and helps people to help themselves. So many Africans are studying in Turkey, they will eventually go back and help carry their own countries into a better future.
This new movement of Africans, their desire for unification and the self-confidence they now have, Erdoğan wished for and foresaw all of this for Africans years ago. It would be wrong to put him in the same pot with the others. How much he appreciates Africans can be seen from the fact that the majority of the guests invited to his presidential celebrations came from African countries.
