    All you need to do is place the bridge over the holes and then use longer screws for the saddles so the intonation would still be correct. Much simpler solution overall. Cheers!

      You are absolutely right and I actually thought about that but for some reason I chose this crazy solution. Can’t really remember why 🙄. Maybe because that wasn’t how Andy Summers original looked. No long screws. Should I do it again I think I going with your advice 😉👍

    I think I had the same issue when replacing my 3 saddle with a modern 6 saddle bridge. What I did in the end is use longer screws and I got it as it was supposed to be, the same string length . So I used the original mounting holes but the new Gotoh bridge is moved by some 10mm back and I countered that by using longer screws.

    I have a modern bridge laying around, installed on my thinline is a "classic" bridge. Problem for me is not the string through holes, it is as you mentioned in the video, the modern bridge sits further back. The saddles on the modern bridge is around 8-10mm further back. I would need M3x40mm philips screws and matching springs to make it work.

    • @MichaelLagerstedt
      @MichaelLagerstedt  Месяц назад +1

      I guess but I’m not totally sure. You just need to make sure that you can move the saddles to 648mm from the nut (if that’s the scale length of course)

    • @MichaelLagerstedt

      That’s what you call the scale length and on a tele and strat it’s 25,5 inches from the nut to the point where the string leaves the saddle of the bridge.
      But each string length needs to be fine tuned. Mostly they need to be longer.
      Hope that helps.

    What if I’m using the baritone telecaster? Is it really the biggest deal ever if my already longer scale length is a little longer?

    • @MichaelLagerstedt
      @MichaelLagerstedt  6 месяцев назад

      Hi Kent, I don’t have experience with baritone guitars and haven’t researched it but when it comes to scale length it has to be pretty precise.
      The length of a string has to correspond exactly with the placement of the frets on the fretboard so a few millimetres too long or too short makes the instrument impossible to tune so it’s in tune all over the fretboard.
      Thanks so much for watching and good luck with your project 😉👍

  • @ZachariahJ

    Thanks for making this Michael.
    I'm not looking to change the bridge on my Harley Benton Tele, but I've been trying to find out why the bridge is just over 10cm long, but most Tele bridges I see are much shorter - 8.6cm, as in your example.
    It's only relevant to me because at one point I was thinking about putting in a Bigsby, which would mean getting the shorter bridge. I won't be doing that now, because it will increase the string length, and I like the guitar nice and twangy!
    I'd still be interested to know just why there are two bridge lengths. My personal theory is that the longer bridge gives more area to transmit string vibrations to the body. That's why I want to keep it. But if my theory was true, ALL Teles would have the longer bridge, so there must be another reason.
    Thanks again for this interesting video!

  • @lone-wolf-1

    I think on the modern bridge the actual difference is the pickup placement. It is placed more towards the middle, wich results in a warmer, fuller sound.
    For the modern individual saddles the string thru holes have to be placed more towards the neck because how the little saddles are constructed. Not enough room under them. Over the cylindrical two-strings-per-saddle, there is more space towards the back for the holes.
    So, you did the correct thing to take the scale length as the main reference. Longer Intonation screws would result in a double bend of the strings on the individual saddles. Also the sound effect of the bridge pickup placed more towards the middle would have been deleted.
    On my kit build tele (heavy modified), there were no holes for string thru, and I wanted a PRS type bridge (I didn‘t liked the big metal plate). Because I think a 90 degree angle on carbon steel made strings is not a good thing, I decided to drill the holes at a 60 degree angle from the top meeting holes drilled perpendicular from the back. Had the same problem with the restringing, but I use a piece of an old A string with a hook bend at the end to pull the new strings thru from the top. Works fine.
    Cheers! I like your builds! Keep going! Grüße aus Deutschland!

    I find the more disturbing thing (Besides the fact that someone thought that is was ok to just move the string through holes and still associate the bridge with a tele) is that the placement of the pickup is different by a LOT with respect to the scale length which should make an enormous difference in the sound of the pickup. This reminds me of the wide variety in les paul JR dogear pickup placement with reference to the bridge.

    • @MichaelLagerstedt
      @MichaelLagerstedt  2 года назад +2

      @roderickbalt8993 10 месяцев назад

      @@lorencing It's all relative, that difference can add up to quite a bit of extra string tension for certain people. Tighter string angle, tighter sound. For the pickup it's not that much, but still depending on the person it can matter.

    • @lorencing
      @lorencing 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@roderickbalt8993 true, it is all relative and it all depends on what sound you are going for. I prefer unique or different rather than going for the sounds I've heard many times. Still, a good question, why is the Gotoh bridge placement that different?

    • @roderickbalt8993
      @roderickbalt8993 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@lorencing I'm not sure it's because of Gotoh but Fender as far as I know changed the string hole placement when going to 6 saddle bridges. So now you have vintage and modern string through holes. Why? Who knows presumably this just worked better for fender to place the holes further. A lot of variances like this exist that to certain people really make a difference. We as guitar players tend to not pay attention to what goes on after the bridge and nut😄.

    I always played my top loaded Tele, then I got a string through, and I didn't like it at all, the strings feel all tight and I find it doesn't do anything for the sustain, string thru adds so much unnecessary downwards pull, at such an angle,that it made the strings feel unbendable, I like my teles to have a slinky feel to them, and I'm not a fan of string thru, they are a pain in the arse to string up, especially if you are using your old set of strings, getting the strings thru the ferrule, without these tubes is a fight, great invention but I would have just went with a top loader myself.
