This Slide Presentation/Talk by Jeffrey B. Perry, which draws on insights from Hubert Harrison, was hosted by The Hubert Harrison and Theodore W. Allen Society on January 31, 2013, at the Brecht Forum, when it was still located in lower Manhattan.
On this cold night the building had no heat. The standing room only audience is testimony to the growing interest in Theodore W. Allen's important work and in the struggle against white supremacy.

Theodore W. Allen's "The Invention of the White Race," with its focus on racial oppression and social control, is one of the twentieth-century's major contributions to historical understanding. This two-volume classic (Vol. 1: "Racial Oppression and Social Control" and Vol. 2: "The Origin of Racial Oppression in Anglo-America") details how the "white race" was invented as a ruling-class social control formation and a system of racial oppression was imposed in response to labor solidarity in the wake of Bacon's Rebellion (1676-77), how the "white race" was created and maintained through "white race" privileges conferred on laboring class European-Americans relative to African-Americans, how these privileges were not in the interest of African-Americans or laboring class European-Americans, and how the "white race" has been the principal historic guarantor of ruling-class domination in America. "The Invention of the White Race" presents a full-scale challenge to what Allen refers to as "The Great White Assumption" -- "the unquestioning, indeed unthinking acceptance of the 'white' identity of European-Americans of all classes as a natural attribute rather than a social construct." Its thesis on the origin and nature of the "white race" contains the root of a new and radical approach to United States history, one that challenges master narratives taught in the media and in schools, colleges, and universities. With its equalitarian motif and emphasis on class struggle it speaks to people today who strive for change worldwide.

Perry's thesis of HH Harrison as the key figure in the birth of both class and race radicalism amongst Western Black thinkers & activists is powerful. Harrison is critically under-appreciated and under-studied, and Perry's work on him deserves much more exposure. This video is making me go dig his Voice Harlem Radicalism about Harrison out of my boxes.
Fast-forward 8 years and we find out how correct he was.
The new “Introduction” (in the new 2012 edition) to volume 1 of Theodore W. Allen argues that the “white race” was invented as a ruling class social control formation in response to labor solidarity as manifested in the later, civil war stages of Bacon's Rebellion (1676-77). To this he adds two important corollaries: 1) the ruling elite, in its own class interest, deliberately instituted a system of racial privileges to define and maintain the “white race” and 2) the consequences were not only ruinous to the interests of African-Americans, they were also “disastrous” for European-American workers, whose class interests differed fundamentally from those of the ruling elite.

The first woman in the Q&A is referring to the Berlin Conference (1884-85) that was based on imperialist ideologies than race . When European countries got tired of fighting to conquer each other and needing resources that could not be provided in Europe, they started to expand out in search of new territory. Each colonial power had different ways of colonizing the people the conquered and is a topic for another discussion and other readings.
European American had already established and reaped the benefits from slavery including a means of sustaining the US economy and were thus more focused on expandig the country westerward (Manifest Destiny) so they had very little interest in imperialism. That happens later with the fight against communism which the US believed posed an imminent threat to their economic structure that was based heavily on capitalist ideologies.
There's a plethora of literature to edify anyone seeking to learn more about that topic. I recently returned to the US after half a year working in Vietnam and the respect, appreciation, and kindness I experience is like nothing I've ever experienced in the US. No one engaged with me as a "black person." I was simply a American, a teacher, or a foreigner. If you're not Vietnamese, you are Britsh, American, Australian, Korean. No one is categorized by the color of their skin, only where they come from.
I have studied, worked, vacationed in 15 countries and counting an the only place my American nationality is hyphenated is in America. White people in America are simply called American but as the video explained so well, they are just as hyphanated as every other person of color in this country. Being American is a way of thinking, behaving, and believing that's influenced by culture heritage and experience. When I travel abroad my "race" takes a backseat or dissapears and it's my nationlity that prevails. Why? Because as the video and Allen's readingd explains so well, race is socially constructed not my culture.
Culturally, I'm African and American. My dad was African-American my mom is Liberian and I was raised in America. I am a mix of these three culture with African-American being a sub culture of American culture hence why you can't be African-American anywhere else but in America. European American is is not synonymous with White. White people in Europe are very different than White Americans and Italians could not be more socially/different than the Dutch lol. Don't get me started on how different the Poles are from the Irish and the Scottish from the French and so on and so on.
I searched for information discussed in this video because I needed to make sense of what I observe and experienced in my travels. Why it was I fared better working in Vietnam than I did in Sierra Leone. I identified more with the business culture in Asia than in Africa because the American business culture is more aligned. Culture is learned behavior.
European Americans are not born superior, they're taught by their family and encouraged by the larger society (other white Americans) through a structural reproduction process. If you observe white Americans around white Europeans you will see just how different they are as cultures. It's almost comical to see a European American trying to go toe to toe intellectually with a (White) European especially an Englishman lol. British people have a linguist cadence that's very different than Americans that takes a bit of time to get use to.
White people in America dont want or need that historical connection with Europe. They left Europe in search religious and social political. African Americans on the other hand, were stolen and carry conscious/subliminal thoughts of what could have been.
In a nutshell not all white people are the same and for that I'm thankful because Europe would be an awfully boring place if they were and eastern Europe would be just as popular a vacation destination as Western. The best advice I can give all people in America is to TRAVEL. This country compromised of so many cultures and traveling allows you to learn a bit more of the story as it truly is from at the source which is so enriching and beautiful🙂

Thank you for sharing - my qigong master teacher trained in Buddhist meditation is African-American - from slave descendents but also native indigenous. So he traveled to Africa in the 1980s - he initiated into shamanism in over a dozen countries over a couple years. I'm talking about Jim Nance - see his "guidingqi" website and he was the teaching assistant of Chunyi Lin, qigong master from China. There is a great book about a Daoist qigong master living in a cave in Vietnam - a Daoist immortal - I think it's called my Fourth Uncle or something.
Yes my school buddy had 1960s activist parents who bonded with their University room mate from Zimbabwe - so my buddy encouraged me to travel. I went to the most traditional Berber village in Morocco - the women grew all the food and made clothes from the wild sheep. Humanure composting was used to grow the food. They were "white" from Wheat farming but had been kidnapped by the Arabs - as sex slaves - so all the women had tattoos on their chins. This was in 1997.

It explains to me, as someone Irish and thus from the home of systemic colonisation, how the Irish in America became 'white' by participating in internalised racism of white supremacy, replaying their own wounds. As we all can see how these same people is still in the slave mentality but want this stuff to stay hidden, do you ever wonder why American history has always been dumb down, but they want us to think it is because black teachers, or black schools? In 1619 there was no legal distinction of "black" and "white". That was created a bit later in Virginia, as a means of preventing solidarity between black and white workers against their common oppressor, and to facilitate the enslavement of the blacks. There were Europeans (English mostly) living in Virginia beginning in 1609. They brought their idiotic barely post-feudal social system with them, and created extensive problems for the Native people.

Skin tone used to be the easy qualifier, but with a globalized world now- there's plenty of "White" brown-skinned and even darker-skinned people. The word "White" (as in, the club which is a social construct) will lose all meaning and reference to the color "white". "Girl" used to mean a small child of any sex, but in the year 2022 it means "young female child".

This is a great subject to discuss for the US. Or at least it was, and should have been moved past long ago. As a Canadian growing up i have to say watching the US deconstruct over the years has been painful and its sad.
The subject that should have been addressed long ago is that of the ruling class/elite/Papacy/European Family - all the same, and it's social programming of the US citizens. Always forcing slavery and racism down your throats while no one stops to realize only large scale land owners ('farm' owners) who were more often than not Government/Political British figures. The common 'white' man didn't own slaves or land and did low wage high labour jobs for the British elite that took over the US from the Spanish and French settlement.
These are the enemies of the people, esp in the US and should be the topic of discussion rather than allowing them to continually reprogramm the slaves to hate each other. The white, black, yellow, and brown slaves of the US: it's citizens.

Theodore W. Allen tries to be precise with his words. His book is entitled “The Invention of the White Race.” Allen writes as follows:
“4. When, therefore, a group of human beings from "multiracial" (the anthropologists' term) Europe goes to North American or South Africa, and there, by constitutional fiat, incorporates itself as the "white race," that is no part of genetic evolution. It is, rather, a political act: the invention of "the white race." Thus it lies within the proper sphere of social scientists, and is an appropriate objective for alteration by social activists.”

This topic is discussed in “The Invention of the White Race” Volume 1: “The Origin of Racial Oppression” in Chapter 1 (entitled “The Anatomy of Racial Oppression”) where Allen writes:
"Historically, “racial dissimilarities,” have not only been artificially used, they are themselves artificial. In colonial Hispanic America, it was possible for a person, regardless of phenotype, to become “white” by purchasing a royal certificate of “whiteness.” With less formality, but equal success, one may move from one “racial category” to another in Brazil where, it is said, “money whitens.” On the other hand, in the United States, the organizing principle of society is that no such “whitening” be recognized, whether by genetics occurring or by wealth attempted. In 1890, a Portuguese emigrant settling in Guyana (British Guiana) would learn that he/she was not “white.” But a sibling of that same person arriving in the United States in that same year would learn that by a sea-change he/she had become “white.” In the last Spanish census of Cuba , Mexican Indians and Chinese were classified as “white” ; but in 1907 the first United States census there classed these groups as “colored.” According to Virginia law in 1860, a person with but three “white” grandparents was a Negro ; in 1907, having no more than fifteen out of sixteen “white” great-great grandparents, entitled one to the same classification; in 1910, the limit was asymptotic: “every person in whom there is ascertainable any Negro blood ...[was to] be deemed a colored person.” As of 1983, the National Center for Health Statistics was effectively following the 1910 Virginia principle, by classifying any person as Black if either of the parents was Black. At the same time, in Texas the “race” classification was determined by the “race” of the father. Prior to 1970, a set of Louisiana court decisions dating back to the late 1700s had upheld the legal concept that “any traceable amount” of African ancestry defined a “Negro .” In 1970, “racial” classification became the subject of hard bargaining in the Louisiana state legislature. The Conservatives held out for 1/64, but “more enlightened” opposition forced a compromise at 1/32, as the requisite proportion of Negro forebears, a principle which was upheld by the state’s Supreme Court in 1974."

People who rely on traditional educators' construction of knowledge or truth instead of engaging in deep research to find the pros and cons of their position will never open their eyes. This isn't new information; this is historical facts. This means that it has been there. However, what I find more interesting is that these things are obvious. They can deduce what is happening in society by using Hegelian dialectic-- if they can pull away from social media, news outlets, and the entertainment world. Thinking isn't difficult. Like anything else, it takes practice.
The American working classes --white-collar and blue-collar workers and PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD have allowed the ruling class (politicians and the elite classes) to construct truth and knowledge and feed it to us. If people were not so snug with the way they are living and are LESS trusting of what they THINK they see and THINK they know about being labor abuses--wages, time off, few benefits, and hours worked, there would be united uprisings demanding employers treat workers with human dignity versus human machines. Employers treat people like psychopaths treat people, as things.
The working classes should rise up and DEMAND politicians and business owners pay decent wages WITHOUT allowing the status quo to increase the cost of products and services after providing the people APPROPRIATE compensation for sweat off their backs, "We the people" --the REAL meaning of that, would understand that power is in the hands of the 90% to 99% versus the 1%-10%. Social distinctions are smoke and mirrors used to distract the working classes from uniting and demanding basic FAIRNESS as the group responsible for keeping the economy going and the wealthy with their bank accounts like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
NO GOVERNMENT official and NOT CORPORATE owners understand anything other than theMONEY they are not making and the accumulation of wealth. Staying home and demanding $17 per hour would show the powers that be who REALLY controls the economy and the profit potential of business owners. There IS NO NEED for violence. Honey gets you more than violence, and it will keep you alive longer. Demand fairness by staying in the comfort of your home and sending your employer a message via text, fax, phone, or email when they contact you.
The Founding Fathers did exactly that to England when they got tired of "working" for and paying Great Britain taxes they were not benefiting from. There is absolutely NO difference between a slave revolution, a class revolution, and the reason behind the Revolutionary War for the independence of the colonies and colonists. NONE. Back then, the colonies were Great Britain's bitch.
However, the Founding Fathers noticed the unfairness and realized that they were treated as less than human beings. They united against Great Britain as Great Britain's subjects or workers and developed a strategy to go against the Machine. I love my African Caribbeans but they were kidnapped, transported to those Islands and colonized just like African Americans. All of this was done by the Europeans.

Remember the Europeans had guns and cannons and had no fear of the Africans.

Which stands to reason that the minor trade transactions between some Africans and the Europeans were minuscule compared to the outright (I'll say it again) kidnapping of Africans and scattered them all over North, South America, and the Carribean. The Europeans tech advantages galvanized their power, so they didn't need to trade with Africans anymore they just plundered and kidnapped at their pleasure.
How could Africa not be conquered when the fruit of Africans was taken away. Meaning mostly the youth of Africa between 12 and 45 were whisked away.
