      Just starting out..?..look into keeping the paws and taking the cartilage out of ears,,gives the fur a way better curb appeal.....👍good luck

    They need an old pair of loping shears. I cut front feet off first at elbow and after stripping tail I cut it off as well. This way tail isn’t hitting me while I spin it to work on skinning job.

    • @md3280
      @md3280 5 лет назад

      They’re cutting it anyway, try getting feet with nails out of fur. Sometimes it damages it, especially if you can’t skin that day.

      Jim Wheeler yes you can. We have another video that explains some of it " fur selling tips and tricks". We average anywhere between $30-$50 for a pelt. As far as selling them there are a lot of places but we sell to NAFA North American fur auctions. get on their website and it explains a lot. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. The last coyote I drilled surprised me by coming loping by about 35 yards away from me when I was deer hunting. At first i wasn't sure what it was because he was almost hairless, the most severely manged dog I'd ever seen, just a puffball left on his tail like a French Poodle. The bullet, a 150gr Nosler/.270WIN out of my Ruger No. 1B, hit bone and wildly expanded leaving a gaping 8" exit wound. He was dead before hit the ground. No pelt from that diseased beast!

    • @HiddenInstinct
      @HiddenInstinct  7 лет назад

      Gunwrites mange is a nasty disease for sure. We are lucky and don’t have much of it at all around our local areas we hunt

    • @gunwrites6222
      @gunwrites6222 7 лет назад

      This was SW Montana. I've seen mange before but NEVER to that extent. I wasn't joking when I said it was almost hairless. I didn't even want to kick the carcass. I moved it around with a stick to inspect it. UGLY!!

    Skinning or plucking, in the case of birds, seems to go cleaner and faster when the game is still warm and limp. Watching your work here it appeared you would need less work defleshing the hide.
    Thanks.

      Yes, that was absolutely a quality skinning job for out in the field! If you wind up with a pickup full, though, and need to do production, you might want to get a copy of Roy Finley's "Two Minute Coyote" DVD. Pretty much the same process but in his skinning shed he automates a bit with a come-along and cranks them out one after the other in a couple of minutes each, getting them ready for the fur trade.

      Must haves for coyotes/fur. If I had to name must haves, it would be these. A tail stripper, a Victorinox serrated pelter for skinning the face, and a decent skinning knife. If you aren't great at sharpening and prefer just changing a blade out the Havalon knives are a good option. I like a thin blade knife for skinning predators, like Old Timer Muskrat or a Case Muskrat, and the good 'ol classic Kutmaster muskrat style knife. The Kutmaster is a damn good knife and it's really affordable. If you planning on putting your fur up (fleshing and stretching/drying) then your going to need a fleshing beam and a fleshing knife. As for a fleshing knife, the Wiebe Elite is hard to beat for fleshing coyotes, of course you can use it to flesh anything really but it works magic with coyotes. As for a fleshing beam, that's personal preference. I like an up right beam where the beam is standing straight up in front of you. Most are setup where you have to bend down but you can run any of the beams out there either way. And lastly, your going to need stretchers to dry your fur on. Your going to hear a lot of different opinions on whether wire or wood stretchers are best. In my opinion, wood stretchers are the way to go if you want the best presentation and more money from your fur. You get a better product on wood. For coyotes, adjustable stretchers are the way to go in my opinion. You get better air circulation and you have more room for fine tuning to get the width you want based on how big the coyote was. They are easy to make. Starting out, you could buy one from a stretcher dealer like Top Lot or Grawes. then just use that stretcher as a pattern to make some of your own. But basically, you need a tail stripper, a skinning knife, fleshing beam, and a fleshing knife, and some stretchers. Those few things will allow you to put up your fur and put more money in your pocket over just selling them green, (green is just skinned and not fleshed or stretched). You'll get quite a bit more for fur that is stretched. Hope this helps. Hope you wear the fur out. I'm trapping them now as we speak.

      Hidden Instinct You'll be glad you did...Fleshing isn't that tough, it's a feel thing...A good fleshing knife makes all the difference...If you need specs on boards, I'll send ya some when I get back on...Thanks for the reply..

      +jose rangel (pbj399) he is using the havalon piranta. You won't find a better knife. It has replaceable blades

    How do you flesh/tan the tail if you do t go all the way down? Also a little confused about the ears and nose, do you cut off nose and ears before you tan? Or is there a way to flesh/tan those as well?

    • @HiddenInstinct
      @HiddenInstinct  5 лет назад

      Clifford Skuse we just dry them. We split the tail all the way when we flesh it so it will dry.

  • @GlennPearsonDIY

    Do you guys just sell the fur or are you doing the predator control program and turning them into Utah DWR? Thanks for the video. Heading out this weekend with my brothers to see if we can get a coyote or two.

    • @HiddenInstinct
      @HiddenInstinct  8 лет назад +2

      Glenn Pearson we do both. If you skin the coyotes and bring the entire hide in they will just snip the ears and count that as both ears. You still have to bring the portion of the lower jaw in also. Good luck!

      NEPONFW yes they are used for clothing. Coyotes are mostly used for drives on collars on hoods or jackets

      Brian T0obad ya Garrett’s wife got his Tacoma repainted for his birthday a few years back. Can’t remember the exact color but basically olive drab green. Ya there are fleas, not a ton but thick in some areas.

    What are you doing with the meat? Dog food or leave it for the scavengers? Thanks

    • @HiddenInstinct
      @HiddenInstinct  7 лет назад

      Jayce Broda we leave it for the scavengers, I’ve made jerky out of it before and it’s not bad but requires a lot of effort for not much meat. Most people don’t realize that the average coyote in our area is probably only 15-20lbs and only maybe 3-5 of that is meat. They are very lean animals, mostly fur.

    why don't you go all the way down the front legs?

    • @HiddenInstinct
      @HiddenInstinct  8 лет назад +1

      There is nothing really used on the front leg and it tends to close up when it dries and not allow as much air flow through the rest of the hide when it's on the stretcher. Don't cut it too short though or it will leave a big hole.
