  • The 2016 JFK Lancer “November in Dallas” conference was held at the Adolphus Hotel in downtown Dallas, November 18-20, 2016. This session, “A Conversation with Bill and Gayle Newman,” marks the first time that The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza has participated in the annual JFK Lancer conference. Curator Stephen Fagin moderated a discussion with Bill and Gayle Newman, the closest civilian eyewitnesses to President Kennedy at the moment of the fatal shot. Standing on the north side of Elm Street, the Newmans fell to the ground and shielded their two young children.
To see related films, photos, documents and oral histories from The Sixth Floor Museum's collection, visit our online collections database (emuseum.jfk.org). Or make a research appointment to explore the books, DVDs and other materials available in the Museum's Reading Room (www.jfk.org/go/reading-room).

I worked for Gale & Bill in the late 70s and early 80s .Wonderful people, Billy was just graduating from high school and worked as my apprentice that summer. They seem exactly the same as they were then. Still a positive inspiration in my life. Their story is the same as I heard them tell me in1979.

Nice, salt of the earth for sure, but they’re on with a closet conspiracy theorist. The word echo (grassy knoll) never came up, or confirmation bias (the conspiracy theorists), let alone all the other overwhelming evidence, and if you can do simple math or have any sense of science or logic, the evidence is not equal on both sides. Not even close. The host smiling at the mention of Begliosi is a major tell, and how can you ignore James Swanson’s air tight book “”End of Days”. If they read his book or even listen to him for two minutes, they would have no reasonable comeback. None. “Open mindedness” sounds good, but it’s been 63 years. We know with reasonable certainty what happened. I wouldn’t want these people researching a cure for cancer. None would ever be found. As I once told my daughter who noticed people acting stupid, “Some people play chess, while others play Mr. Potato Head.”

I'm so grateful to see this is preserved on video for future generations. My grandparents were in Dallas that day too but sadly they have passed on. I enjoy stories from that generation.

In my opinion, with NO first hand knowledge, and being 13 years old at that time November 1963, I personally believe that it was definitely a Conspiracy. More than one shooter, yes Oswald, but not the Final Shot, it came from the "Grassy Knoll" behind the wooden fence. The way the President's head Exploded and his head Jerked severely Backwards, and the Brain matter & Blood looked to go to the Rear of the Car. Oswald's was the 1st shot, hitting president in the Upper back and exiting his Throat, and Possibly wounding Governor Conlley (unintendedly), the Second Shot was a Miss, possibly hitting the left hand Curb. Again my personal opinion with NO factual evidence, just a Guess.
Why didn't Bill & Gayle get called to the Warren Commission to Testify??

This was a fascinating interview! Bill and Gayle Newman are just down-to-earth people who witnessed the most extraordinary experience of their lives. I have so much respect for them for refusing to get caught up in the “celebrity” and exploiting what they saw and how it affected them and their family. A lot of people just eat up the attention and run with it for all they can get. Not this family. They are willing to talk to anyone and answer their questions and express what they were feeling, then and now, without the arrogance or notoriety that some other witnesses of this tragic event probably did. In their initial interview at the television station right after the assassination, they were visibly shaken, as anyone would be. Gayle seemed more concerned about her children than herself. It was heartbreaking to see her mentally “go back” to what had just happened. The shock was obvious and understandable. But, as a mother myself, I felt her grief of how this would effect her 2 babies.....what have they just seen? What will they remember? How can I possibly explain to my toddlers what they saw? Even if she hadn’t expressed it at the time, she surely was aware of the significance and the magnitude of what she and her family had just witnessed. I can’t even comprehend the effect seeing their President be gruesomely murdered only a few feet from them. My heart goes out to this family.

This is a portion of the statement made by William Newman to the Dallas County Sheriff's Dept on Nov 22, 1963:
"I thought the shot had come from the garden directly behind me, that was on an elevation from where I was as I was right on the curb. I do not recall looking toward the Texas School Book Depository. I looked back in the vicinity of the garden."

    • @stddisclaimer8020

@81overon: Newman might have well said: "I thaw I thaw a puddy kat," and 81overon would be all in on it, providing 'twas not an Oswald puddy kat. Multiple major investigations eventually got to the truth of the matter; namely, that all shots were fired from the 6th floor window of the TSBD, and by one man: L.H. Oswald. We have seen how it's fairly typical of conspiracy pushers to cling to early, inaccurate reports or statements given in the fog of the moment, and then ignore subsequent corrections or clarifications, when it suits their argument. Of course, per the blinkered thinking of "81overon," the "corrections" are all part of The Grand Coverup. Yeah sure, that's the ticket.

Everyday people in extraordinary circumstances... they ARE and always will be a true representation of folks just living their lives in 1963. People many times say that eyewitnesses rarely see what actually happened. But, when people in “authority” tell you “no....that’s not what you saw. What actually happened is......” When Mr Newman was shown the Zapruder film and he doesn’t see on film what he remembered.......the sudden, very brief stop of the JFK’s limousine......he questioned “Is that really what I saw?” He’s had doubt placed in his mind. If one or two people had that experience, you might think “Well, I guess I was wrong.” But, when 100+ people saw the same thing as the Newman’s and are told that’s not what they saw, that’s a enormous red flag! All these people that were there that day didn’t know each other, much less discuss amongst each other if they all saw the same thing. But, you’ve got 100 people who were there and KNEW what they saw and heard, are told by an entity that, at the time, was assumed the government always told the truth..... and are now telling you that YOU were wrong, that YOU were mistaken, that YOU didn’t see what you THINK you saw, and put questions in your own mind and not the government, is the highest order of manipulation.

Right and no one had a better view or impression-shots from the knoll. 51 witnesses in Dealey Plaza thought at least one shot came from the knoll. Very hard to believe they were all wrong since many were close to the limo or Grassy Knoll area .Several of the Parkland Doctors and nurses, along with many Bethesda witnesses believed the throat wound was one of entrance, or the head shot(s) came from the front. Back to Dealey Plaza, that's only the witnesses we know about... as many never went on record.

@TRINZINI: In the first of two FBI interviews in 1967, Ed Holland claimed he had seen two white males running from the rear of the TSBD. Then, in the second interview, he retracted that story. But years later, he claimed to have seen a man, dressed in a business suit, shoot from behind the fence, and then toss the rifle to a man in a man dressed as a railroad worker, who disassembled it, put it into a case, and walked off. With his own father and brother on record as casting doubt on Holland's reliability, this would seem to be damning for his "current" story. There is no record of Holland telling his this story in the 1960s, but by the 70s he was clearly doing so. So much for the claim that Hoffman "never changed (his) story." Clearly, James Leon Simmons, Richard Calvin Dodd and Ed Holland make up the "Terrible Troika" of Triple Overpass liars.

Who am I ? No one! - I heard that the car slowed almost to a stop. Supposedly, the driver did that because he was trying to figure out what was going on. He thought it was a tire blow out on the car at first.
As for shots coming from different directions, I believe that. I do not.believe the Warren Commission’s fairy tale that Lee Harvey Oswald fired three shots with a WWII era bolt action rifle from the southeast corner window of the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository and that he acted alone.
Shots were fired from that window, but I do not believe Oswald was the one doing it. I believe that shots also came from the DalTex building and from behind the stockade fence on the grassy knoll. There were two shooters there and one of them shot the fatal shot into JFK’s right temple. There could’ve been even more shooters. Some people say there were 7-8 shots fired and at least one came from the front. It left a bullet hole in the windshield of the car and there was a bullet entrance wound on JFK’s forehead right at the hairline.

@Who am I ? No one! The Zapruder film clearly shows the limo slowing, but definitely not stopping. To maintain the limo-stopped (pro-conspiracy) position, you'd have to say that the Z-film was altered. In turn, you'd also have to say that the Muchmore and Nix films were altered, and in the precise same way. That line of thinking shows how, once you start claiming alternations, you have to reject more and more evidence in order to maintain your alterationist position. Eventually, everything is faked and forged, and reality merges into one absurd comic book.
Eighty-eight percent of the 179 witnesses who expressed an opinion said there were three shots and three shots only. The largest group that identified a location, 28 percent, said they came from the book depository. Only four witnesses, 2 percent of all the witnesses at Dealey, heard shots coming from more than one location. You are in the minority, those were clearly mistaken.

There is some rather revealing evidence in Mr. Newman's testimony starting at 09:50 . He did not initially recognize the first two shots as gunfire until hearing the third shot. The reason being is because the ballistics of the third round was different from the first two fired. It sounded different because a .223 frangible is completely dissimilar to a 6.5x52 full metal jacketed Carcano cartridge.
Basically confirming the existence of a second shooter. Oswald's two shots were from the sixth floor of the Texas book observatory and were not as loud. The third shot came at ground level, and was much louder alerting Bill Newman.

I like when Bill said he got some flak from Dan Rather about saying Kennedy had stood up in the limo, while Rather himself just flat out lied about what he had seen after viewing the Zapruder film. (he said Kennedy's head moved violently forward)

At his televised interview on the day, he said shooting took place in 10 seconds - even if he was slightly out, and it was 7 seconds (which accords to the Zapruder film, whether shortened or not,) then plenty time for 3 shots from one gun. If the shots did come from the fence behind him, he would have clearly heard that as it was much closer to him than the 6th floor window - he only deduced that as the head was damaged on that (right) side.

Amazing how they are still being interviewed about this. They knew who did it.
Nice they are still married, and happy to talk about the horrible day.

I remember in school my teacher whispered something in the first kids ear and we passed the message until it got to the last about 25 students. It wasn't even close to the message it was so far off we were laughing. Just goes to show how things get changed from person to person idk what happened but I do know that people can be programmed to do a certain action.

Guess what. I was part of a psychology group. The Lecturer done exactly as you said. I was the first person to receive the message. His instructions were, when the message moved through the whole group the last person in the hall was to come back and give it to me. When I got the final sentence I was to write it down and give it to the lecturer. I done this. He said it was the first time he ever got it back, correctly, word for word. He asked us all to repeat after each exchange what we thought we heard. Of course it changed continuously. Interestingly, my first +second didn't match. But, my second matched the correct.
I had no problem getting exams there. 😂

Yes this seems clear enough. A long time ago, and still at the time of this interview, he had the impression that the shots came from the grassy knoll.

Nice to see this couple, so many decades later ❤.
I watched the footage of the interviews they did in the WFAA news studio yesterday on RUclips, which they did right after the shooting. They both looked to be in shock. I felt so bad for them having to witness JFK's assassination, and from such a close location too, and with their two little boys too. What a terrible thing to witness. I'm glad they were able to explain, in this video, more about what they saw that day, since they aren't in shock this time, so are better able to talk about it.

What bothers me is what the typist types up opposed with what was said and intended. YES people must read their statements to confirm it was true and correct but sometimes one word changed can give a different meaning.

The Sapruder film was doctored, according to the film expert to whom it was first entrusted, before he turned it over to Life Magazine, which submitted it to a processing facility that reportedly had CIA connections. Some frames were removed, and the explosive impact of the shot to the president's head was altered, making it hard to determine from which direction that shot came. This authoritative interview is available on RUclips. And this may be why the eyewitness account of seeing the president's car stop may not correlate with the current version of the film. Because frames were removed.

As far as I am concerned, the Zapruder film was evidence that fatal shot HAD to come from the front. So if the Zapruder film was indeed "altered" - that means that the original film must have even been even more damning, and ultimately proof of a shooter - or shooters - from the front!
Oswald himself stated he was a patsy. And no government firearms expert evidently was ever able to fire Oswald's gun in the timeframe that he was supposed to have fired off those 3 shots. Oh - additionally, the sight on Oswald's Mannlicher-Carcano rifle was misliagned!
So, for all apologists for the Warren Commission, explain that!!!

Shock can do alot to a person's mentality, emotions & actions including wiping any memory clean of the traumatic event they may have been involved in. Also, the passage of years can dim & even distort a memory. They seem clear & concise as to the event as it unfolded that day. A sight bit of doubt seems to have slipped into Bill's thoughts as he expressed them at the end of the conversation. Not doubts as to what they witnessed or heard but, doubts as to the circumstances.

Take a listen to the Mark Fuhrman assessment of this shooting (on Fox Nation). He conclusively shows where the 3rd bullet ricocheted off the top edge of the front windshield.
