- Lester William Polsfuss (June 9, 1915 - August 12, 2009), known as Les Paul, was an American jazz, country, and blues guitarist, songwriter, luthier, and inventor. He was one of the pioneers of the solid-body electric guitar, which made the sound of rock and roll possible. Paul taught himself how to play guitar and while he is mainly known for rock music, he had an early career in country music. He is credited with many recording innovations. Although he was not the first to use the technique, his early experiments with overdubbing (also known as sound on sound)delay effects such as tape delay, phasing effects and multitrack recording were among the first to attract widespread attention.
His innovative talents extended into his playing style, including licks, trills, chording sequences, fretting techniques and timing, which set him apart from his contemporaries and inspired many guitarists of the present day. He recorded with his wife Mary Ford in the 1950s, and they sold millions of records.
Among his many honors, Paul is one of a handful of artists with a permanent, stand-alone exhibit in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He is prominently named by the music museum on its website as an "architect" and a "key inductee" along with Sam Phillips and Alan Freed. Les Paul is the only person to be included in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
Footage is from "Tales of Tomorrow" -"The Great Silence" an American anthology science fiction series that was performed and broadcast live on ABC from 1951 to 1953.

I wonder if Burgess Meredith shot this film (of which we see an excerpt here) before or after attending his weekly Communist Party meeting?
Anyway, although Meredith would later denigrate the role for which he is probably best remembered, referring to him as "that damn bird," Meredith should have had at least some gratitude for the work, which, after all, probably helped keep a roof over his and his family's heads and food in their bellies, never minding that 'Batman' gave a lot of pleasure to many children over a few generations.
And it is not as if Meredith only did one guest starring role in the series either. Meredith appeared in 21 episodes as that "fine-feathered fink," having tied with Cesar Romero (as "The Joker") for the most guest appearances by an actor in the campy comic-book-inspired TV series, only the regular cast members, themselves, having appeared in more episodes. And if he disliked the role so much, why did Meredith also resurrect the character for a 1968 episode of Screen Gems' 'The Monkees' TV series? "Damn bird," indeed.
