But thankfully things turned around before my dad died. the first time I remember my dad telling me he loved me was shortly after I turned 20 and was living in another sate. But he and I built a good relationship over the next 14 and a piece years he had. M dad had some amazing qualities and I am thankful how well I got to know him after that letter.

Kelly - she's an adult. It's not up to you to fix everyone. When someone is ready, he or she will ask. One of the best ways I've been able to talk to my friends about money is when we go out to lunch, I order an appetizer and ice water. My friend then asks why I'm not getting a full entree and I explain that's a good way that I have to go out with friends and still watch my budget. That generally leads into a discussion about budgets or finances. (But I do leave a good tip for the waitress.) Small choices can lead to savings pretty quickly.

I think if the wife takes in a couple of kids doing daycare while he's at work, that money could go to paying off their student loans. That sounds like a much better solution than putting the kids in daycare and the wife going to work, and the husband working extra hours.. they could also take in dogs on the weekends. There are other solutions, instead of giving the dad an early heart attack from overwork.. Come on man!

In most cases I believe what they are saying about new cars. But if your frugal and find new cars like I do for 22-24k, and drive them for 7 -8 years and put 250k on them I dont believe the deprieciation as much. Yes if u buy new and sell it rather quick, of course. Also in my situation I work 50-100 miles round trip and sometimes thru big cities late at night, the new/newer car security is worth more than my 300 month payment. The "hooptie" 2000 dollar car Dave Ramsey likes to talk about is great if your from his hometown where u drive 5 miles to work and you drive past 3 people who do car repair in their front yard for 150 bucks and a case of beer. To others like me its 800. I drive them until the repair bills per month start becoming as much as a car payment. The peace of mind is worth more than 300 month to me......Yes I agree most of these callers buy 75k vehicles which is nuts in most cases
Or go to CarMax and buy a 1 yr old car for 18k, and sell your used car privately for 3k, cheap payments, this is only my personal belief that peace of mind out weighs " low" car payments, notice I said low not $650. If we're talking straight finances only, I agree a new car is not the smartest decision, but are you comfortable with your wife or daughter driving around your grandchildren in a 220k mile 13 year old Subaru? I'm not sold on that option

Yes, they do. I upgraded my 2002 Civic to a 2021 Accord with cash. The manual transmission was failing, and the cost to repair was more than the car was worth. We'd been putting money in our new car sinking fund for years, so it was easy. We also got my husband a 2021 Jeep Wrangler to replace his 2010 with over 250,000 miles and costly repairs needed. Again, paid for with cash from the sinking fund. Since those purchases, we already have money in our car fund for one vehicle (which we won't need for years). Intentionality is key.

Jackie - if you get the debt paid off and the house paid off by working hard the next decade, you will find that you can live on a lot less once that happens. You DON'T have to be a millionaire to retire happily - so get to work on the debt and paying off the house (even if you downsize to a smaller house.) I would NOT get an apartment if there is any way you can pay off a house before retirement. It's much easier to live in retirement with modest income and a paid-for house than it is to rent when the rent keeps going up each year. This is not just the husband's fault - he may have been trying different strategies to meet how the wife wanted to live. We don't know. But it was also HER responsibility to check on the family finances.

Why are we making babies and then later asking ourselves questions like:
    1. Who’s going to raise them?
(The Bible, nature, common sense, statistics teach us that mommies raise little children.)
    2. How much money will they cost?
    3. How many hours will we work?
    4. When are we paying off our debt?
    Etc.
Come on people. I lose my patience when children get brought into these nutty situations. Children need their mothers to raise them; full stop. So, dad go out and bust your ass, and then have mom work Saturdays and 2-3 evenings when dad can be home. Somebody else may raise YOUR children for you 1-2 days a week tops.
Furthermore, adults recognize the reality of trade-offs in life. If we make children then we don’t go to grad school, because the children need to be . . . parented.

My current vehicle I have had for about 13 years now and I bought it used for 10k. Hope to get a few more years before buying another used vehicle. Thankfully, I got my husband to agree to buying used... he keeps trying to tell me used cars aren't dependable... marketing is so full of bs. I dont want to spend money that I worked hard for to fly out the window. Sometimes, I have to really stand my ground with him because his poor upbringing shows, and I have to kindly but firmly tell him, "we aren't doing that."

Not everyone can stay at home with their kids. No mental health professional will tell someone just to stay at home with their kids while they’re financially struggling to the point they can’t pay their bills and they are stressed. I think you need to do some research on the data of stressed parents interacting with the kids and the downstream effects it has on a child. So you’re just going to have to get over it!

But in this case that he recommended it definitely sounded doable for that couple. If it adds a year to the debt journey that could be a good alternative to childcare for them. That wasn't suggested. That mom wants to be home and it sounded doable. So them pushing childcare again wasn't appropriate in that situation.

The kid will be fine. I promise you it will be worse when mom resents dad because he’s never home, and dad is always stressed because he never gets to be home with his family. Trust me, the data is worse with parents being stressed all the time. They can find a reliable, trustworthy family member, nanny, or daycare and she can earn some money to pay the loans off. At that point she can stay home with her babies. Also, what I said get over is “I freaking hate when John recommends childcare” that’s going to happen so either watch or don’t but stop complaining.
