I agree, if Hooker does really good in the preseason. He could be paid until the Lions can make a package deal to help resign and rebuild the Lions. Goff is going to retire a Lion. Unless he thinks that he can win 3 Super Bowls after the age of 38. Brady did it, but I feel that Goff will want to spend more time with his family. And maybe work for the Lions in another capacity.
Hooker put 52 points on Bama including a couple Bama corners playing for Lions. He just needs time to learn the system.
I hope we extend Hooker next year so just in case if Goff goes down in his last couple of years we have a competent backup who knows the playbook.

We're in great shape with Jared starting and a backup like Hooker. I hope Hendon rips it up in pre-season. Nothing like good competition to keep Jared motivated to become top 3 in the league!

Not really. If Hooker balls out at least we'll know we have a solid backup and if he continues to improve in the future to the point there's a QB controversy, Goff could still be benched. I don't think this will ever happen, but look at Favre/Rogers or Bledsoe/Brady or Montana/Young.

@@jasondeslatte7611 I disagree that it's a mistake. Goff did earn an extension and the near future is bright for the Lions. QBs can play well into their 30s. The only way Hooker plays is if he balls out to the point that the coaches want to see him start or Goff regresses - unlikely or if Goff gets injured or retires. Personally I like Hooker a lot, he's just in an unfortunate situation.

I have heard that some people wonder what the Lions plan to do with Hendon Hooker. I think that having Hooker is good for the long stretch of games without a bye week. I would like to see the Lions run up a big lead and then rest Goff and then put Hooker in to finish the game. That would keep Goff healthy and give Hooker some experience for the future. All Hooker would have to do is not lose the game. Everyone could see what he could do under real game circumstances. Goff is not subjected to potential injury. A win for everyone.

So this is about JGs story after all. It’s a great story but that doesn’t take away from our initial hope that HH would be the guy we saw in college before he got hurt.
This what I think will happen with he will get reps in camp in pre season games, why because while Teddy was here that didn't happen, the Lions will groom him get him ready, show people what he can do and then before his contract is up they will trade him or if he is satisfied being a backup they will keep him. But I really think that the Lions will get him ready and him next season and trade another QB as backup !
It's just business. Brad Holmes does trade away good Lions players for picks. Hooker, Rodriguez, Craig Reynolds don't quite fit but could start elsewhere like Oukdah, Hockenson & Swift. Brad usually does x-Lions right. Does anyone know what happened to Buggs?

Brad holmes plan i think is to have hendon hooker under jared goff is to learn : it's a perfect sercenio to learn under a veteran to perfect their craft. Brad isnt like chicago gm to do a dumb move to trade way justin fields and put immediately a rookie quaterback to start.

Hooker would end up costing far more than Goff, over the same amount of time. It's common sense, really. If Hooker was our starter next season and we went to the playoffs...that was year 3 of his 4 year rookie contract! Guess what time it is!!! Time to extend your franchise QB, in a $70m annual, QB market!! 6 years, $400m+ and $300m+ in gauranteed money.
