your explanation of this is so perfect , love the shape of the shovel and the plugs it makes, I did opt for the t handle but only cause I was afraid the phoenix was going to be to short. but either way it makes the same plugs,, that brute would probably be great on a farm field though
The only concern with that much of a taper to the plug would be on deep targets, not much margin for error on pinpointing but I can see why it works so well in your soil, a smaller connection point when prying out the plug. Excellent demo Streak! 👍
I have never had a problem with the angle or tapered spade not going deep. I have use the Phoenix in all different soils. It is perfect for about 7"-8" deep targets. I do not want to spend my time digging deeper than 9" deep. Parks service I am sure will have a problem with us digging huge deep holes. To dig deeper I just use the Hornet shovel in the farms fields. I do not take the Hornet into parks because it is a gigantic frikn shovel.
@@PaystreakSuperfreak I wasn't referring to depth but rather the potential of striking a deep target with the shovel, the more the plug tapers the less room for error on the pinpoint, not an issue on shallow targets.
I do not have problems striking or scratching targets. Once in a whole I may scratch a coin if it is on edge of plug. Most of the time if I damage a target...it is with my hand digger in roots or gravel.
I like your Phoenix, Jeremy, especially the curved blade. I have the Lesche T-handle, it works great, but I need to dig at an angle to make perfect plugs. Great video.

There is something special with the double curved shape. The Phoenix glides into the ground forming a cone just by the shape of the head. Other straight spaded shovels you need to angle the shovel to make a cone. The Phoenix is MAGIC!!

On my third plug I had an indian head poking out of the side wall of the plug, it must have rode the concave of the shovel it didnt even damage it at all. I've had my model 24 for almost two years now and the one and only problem I consistently have is other people seeing it, and assuming that I'm creating a huge mess with big holes everywhere. When I ask them to find any place I've dug they can't then I demonstrate a plug dig and they are pretty impressed with how clean a plug it can produce. I think it just looks intimidating to people at first glance and they FREAK OUT (no offense). Anyway I wouldn't let a person see it when asking permission to hunt they're property but I'm absolutely gonna bust it out when I get the permission because nothing else compares. When precision and cleanliness is at the utmost importance in a permissions pristine yard you have to have the model 24 so that putting the plug back in goes back fast and disappears with a couple steps to push it in all the way. We don't have to talk about durability it speaks for itself. I also have the model 20 hand digger and I have never bent either one and light enough to carry around all day. Amazing tools from a great company made in southern New Jersey. Thanks Jeremy for turning me on to predator tools I can't go back to anything else now.
Very well said Tim!! I have also had Karens freak out about me using a shovel. I pop a plug in front of them, put the plug back in the hole give it a couple stomps, that seems to shut those Karens right up. There is just no comparison to any other shovel on the market, The Phoenix hands down has the cleanest plugs out of any shovel out there...period!!!
Have you ever tried the Predatortools Raptor hand digger? if so, what do you think and would you use it over your hand digger? Better yet, can you make a video comparing it :D love your videos and your energy
PS, Love your shovel comparison videos. I'm curious, do you have a digging technique that you use in parks that don't permit shovels? A friend of mine in Denver hunts parks that only allow screwdrivers and probes. He cuts a 6" slit in the turf and then pries the sides of grass up with the screwdriver. To me that can cause more damage than a shovel but he says in Denver you have no choice. He is pretty good at this technique but I was wondering if you had ever tried it. Bill
I will not detect a place that has a shovel ban. Using a screwdriver will damage the ground more than a hand digger. Using a only screwdriver makes this hobby not fun!! We have modern specialized digging tools that are much much less intrusive than a screwdriver or probe. If my city were to make it screwdrivers and probes only....I would give up metal detecting and switch hobbies, or I would move to a different city. I feel very sorry for the metal detectorists in Denver, they should lobby for our hobby and show the city council how destructive a screwdriver is compared to a modern engineered hand digger. Metal detectorist are cleaning the parks for free!!
Great video! If you don't mind me asking, how tall are you? The shovel I have now is 35" in overall length. I'm a bit over 6'1". The Phoenix is a bit shorter at 33 3/4" . Just trying to get a comparison and reference. Thanks a bunch.

I agree!! Minelab and Nokta should step up to the plate with an ergonomic and lightweight shaft design. This straight shaft design is old news!!
Love my Phoenix shovel! Is my first from Predator and I agree the best. I have 20 years worth of other shovels collecting dust.

Make sure you get the model 24/Phoenix Shovel. I use this exclusively on my channel, too... expensive😅 but worth it!

I am 6ft tall and the Phoenix is a bit short for me. The Predator Hurricane has the same spade but is 38 inches long with a T-handle.
