Corrections: 1) He was not the director for this film.(He has directed taare zameen par in which he was the lead actor). 2) Acting and Body transformation was not done simultaneously. He first finished the part where he was old and fat. He then took 6 months and got ripped and then started shooting for the younger portion. So the movie must have taken 1.5-2 years (They also took wrestling classes for the movie).
aamir is cray good with his craft tbh. most of his movies (starring and production both) have really good concepts and meaning behind them, dkdk might wanna have a watch. personally i haven't watched dangal, but if it's aamir, then i have no doubt it'll be good (and make me cry buckets). my personal favourite is 3 idiots and taare zameen khan (this one explored dyslexia). he also did a documentary series of sorts that highlighted social plights in india, so if you guys are interested, do check out satyamev jayate, pretty sure it's fully available in youtube with subs :)

i can get that fat in just 4 to 5 days. but this require a great guts, because after getting fat then to get fit one must have to workout so hard, but i admire aamir for his acting and his dedication. i can get fat but not get fit afterwards.
