I woke up almost late to class and had a quiz on this so on my way I listened to this video three times. Thanks for the help!
Update: I’m good. Thanks again!
Glad to have helped!
did u watch it first as exposition, development, then recapitulation?
Omg same
The life of a music major lol!
One month of university classes compacted into 5 minutes. Thanks!
Sonata forms has 3 sections : The exposition , the development and Recapitulatión .
The exposition starts peacefully and then while the song goes on the tension starts to take place till we came back to the recapitulation where we return home after the journey ( Tension).
Thanks for bringing in sitcoms as a metaphor for this musical form!
ive been trying to learn sonata form for ages now, my school has been trying for about 3 years to drill this into me but its never made sense, but that cookie analogy made everything so clear now XD thank you!
That's great to hear! So glad it helped!
Thank you for this video. I plan on using it to help a composition pupil compose a sonata.
And if he sees this comment: Hey! :)
Is that me?
Something that sounds simple becomes so complicated. God i love it! 😅
A really excellent recap on sonata form. Love the cookie analogy! Thanks.
Seeing Jake and Amy was a pleasant surprise in this video!!
my piano teacher told me that he’d test me on this next week and i listened to this vid and knew the answers immediately, ty!
Beautifully explained, thank you!
Thank you for a very easy to understand explanation of Sonata Form.
Keep up the great work.
this is amazing thank you so much!
Very cool!
Thanks
EPIC VIDEO !
ok so i have now been reminded of sonata form and can now go off and finally start out on an idea i had yet follow the rules to keep it true to its name, thanks much appreciated :)
That's great to hear! Good luck with your project, we like to see/ hear it when it's done!
This is absolutely outstanding
Thank you A Singh!
0:15 Little correction for mozart and Beethoven entrance 😆
Btw thank you for this explanation, really help me
totally helpful!!
Thank you so much. I was writing a paper and had no idea how to interpret the sonata form in the piece I'm writing about. THIS SAVED ME
So glad we could help you!
Thanks for uploading this. It really helped.
Thank you Amy! So happy that we were able to help you. Let us know if there are any other topics you're interested in hearing about!
Very very thanks.
Bravísimo!!
the cookie and tv anology is fantastic!
Thank you!
Sometimes though, the original key isn’t stated until the transition, so wrong key first theme is recapitulation. I’ve seen this primarily in Mozart. 2 examples that come to mind are K 545 which states the first theme in F and Symphony no. 1 in Eb K 16 that states the first theme in C minor.
in a sonata for example in a cello sonata in tha first mov can we do dc dacapo
THANK YOU SO MUCH 😊😊
Thank YOU for watching! We appreciate your support and are glad you liked the video.
Very informative video on the sonata form...thank you!
Glad you liked the video! Let us know if there are any other topics you'd like us to cover.
What are the uncircled 12 bars between the 1st and 2nd melody? How long are sonata sections, typically? Just as an average example # of measures, knowing it can vary greatly. How long are sonatas, in measures, typically?
My teacher just sended me a 8th grade finishing song and i can hear myself crying
Good
Nice explanation. There is a mistake on the slides - at 2:48 "second theme" should be "second key" and again, on the right, at 2:55 (actually, second theme is a very rare choice at this point). It would also be helpful if you were to add an analysis of a piece or two with audio. Thanks!
Sonata Form is so much better than whatever rambling and on and on form the baroque period used. I like much of the Romantic period forms and modern instrumental (video game, tv, movie) music styles as it uses loosely the Sonata Form, but deviates in order to conform to a story to tell a story without feeling to rigid.
I love your explanations, but please could you use simple words...Thank you. I now understand Sonata.
Interesting however, for dummies like myself, I now need a video to explain this one.....
I think a video showing the creation of a sonata would be very useful
What's the background music? :)
Luv from India❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Do you speak spanish too?
Fucking amazing! Keep it up dude ;)
Thank you. Dear Lord...THANK YOU.
Thank you for the cookies' analogy!! x
I have one question...should the second and third movements of the sonata be written using the same formula as the first movement? Second(adagio) and third(presto) movements also ,,exposition+development+recapitulation"?
In most cases the 2nd mvt is a preparation to the 3rd mvt/ last mvt (Like moonlight sonata). Also the last movement can be written in sonata rondo form (AB, AC, AD...). I'm pretty sure a sonata piece only needs 1 mvt to be in sonata form(if this is the case. It should be the most important mvt).
Giorgi Baliashvili If the first movement is in sonata form, the second will be different; it could be in ABA form, variation form, binary form (AB), et cetera.
A third movement could be a dance type movement, either a Minuet (three beats in a bar), or a Scherzo (three beats but played one-in-a-bar).
A fourth movement could be a rondo (ABACA), another sonata movement, variations (if not already used), or something different.
The outline above is flexible, you could have two, three or four movements using some or all of the types mentioned above, and in any order (though a sonata form movement would normally come first).
@@elaineblackhurst1509 Thank you
The second movement can be in sonata form, although that’s not the most common. An example of a sonata form second movement is in Beethoven’s Piano Sonata no. 1 in F minor where 3 out of 4 movements are in sonata form. Second movement is in a truncated sonata form or what I like to refer to as Sonatina Form, the development section is replaced by a brief bridge to the recapitulation. And the fourth movement of that same sonata uses an atypical key for the second theme. First theme is in F minor, second theme is in C minor. Typically, when the final movement is in sonata form, it’s not as rigorous and typical as the first movement sonata form. Moonlight Sonata though is the exception, in that sonata, the first movement is in that Sonatina Form and the third movement is in your textbook sonata form, with a developmental coda as is typical for Beethoven.
More common forms for the second movement include:
Ternary Form(the large type without repeat signs, not the small type with repeat signs that you find in dances)
Rondo, usually a 5 part rondo
Theme and Variations
Other forms that are less common than either those 3 or Sonatina Form, but can still show up in second movements include:
Dance, such as a Minuet and Trio
Binary Form
Fugue
So really, the second movement is the most free in terms of the form, anything goes.
💜💜
What sets this video apart from other explanations, for example on Wikipedia is the mention of themes. Listening to others one would not realise that the 2+ themes are wound into the exposition development and recap. I was condufused until today.
.
Haydn's sonatas are without peers by the way. One day everyone will get his greatness.
Is this for free?
Can i use this video for educational instructions?
Thank you for asking, can you explain in what context you hope to use the video? For example do you want to simply show it in your classroom, or do want to use it in some other way?
@@Libertyparkmusic_LPM for our tv based lesson for grade 9 music. I just want them to see how watch your clearer discussion about sonata forms.
@@vernixpascualmagayano725 Thanks for waiting, we discussed this and it's ok to use this video as long as you are not making money off of it in some way and you mention and credit our website LibertyParkMusic.com
@@Libertyparkmusic_LPM noted . thank you very much
The pictures on 0:17 Are not accurate
You are correct, Beethoven arrives on screen when the narrator says Mozart and visa-versa, that's a detailed observation thank you for noting it.
@@Libertyparkmusic_LPM no problem.
Bah, he's close enough. It's a great video
lol I forgot how ridiculous Santiago was (from Brooklyn 99), Also reminded me of the episode where the captain is obsessed with the oboist nicknamed "the spit king", lol
Listen up bitch, what the fuck you telling people who are enjoying a moment of reminiscing to shut up for? I'm talking about shit pertaining to this video, which is Brooklyn 99, & classical music, why the fuck wouldn't I bring it up?

Hi mga classmates
I feel so dumb!! I hate even reading instructions!!!! 🙄😛🤣
我还不会
I’m on my dads account but I’m 12 … I have to do a 10 slide project on this 😀 I don’t get ittttttttt
Actually, I believe Bach, Beethoven, etc just wrote music which expressed how they felt.
I hardly believe it was any more complicated than that.
Sonata is in this form. I am studying it now and there is a form for sonata. There are other pieces made by them that aren’t sonatas but these are :)
@@damienmcgr Thank You very much for your reply.
So they actually knew a specific form or structure centuries ago before music theory or technology even existed?
I figured they wrote beautiful music which just sounded good to them.
@@JS45678music theory existed back then too lmfaoo
I suspect it was the intro verse chorus verse chorus bridge(instrumental) verse chorus outro if it's day
Pretty sure Beethoven isn’t Mozart
