  • Ron "Coach" Watters is a local legend in central Alabama! Today he does a deep dive on all things turkey calling with us. Ron has been calling up turkeys since the 1970s and has a family history of turkey hunting in Alabama that goes all the way back to the 1930s! In this video, Ron gives us a master class on his blend of old-school turkey-hunting wisdom. We cover:
    - Ron's grandfather, who was tragically killed while turkey hunting in 1939
    - Ron gives a demonstration of a scratch box call, which was made by his grandfather in the 1930s
    - Hunting a turkey on his terms, and winning
    - How to find where a gobbler calls "home" and hunt him there
    - Ron's 3 p's of turkey hunting
    - Ron's "covert calling" tactics that gives birds the ultimate confidence to come in
    - The "death call"
    - How Ron got into call-making
To order one of Ron's calls, text 256-846-0671 or email tkm150@hotmail.com

Get yourself a Turkey Killin' PHD right here! This is one of those episodes that you watch from start to finish...then once it's done you immediately start it over again and really soak in the wealth of knowledge that Ron pours out here.
I purchased 2 of his calls and hoping to outsmart one of these "cigar smoker" public land birds next week.

Mr. Ron used to walk all of us to death trying to keep up with him when I was young. He is a tall man and Mr. Camp nor Mike were over my height of 5'8. My daddy's nickname was Shorty, so go figure. We hunted in the Fall and Spring and both demanded waliking many miles. I can remember seeing Mr. Waters waiting at the top of the next ridge, looking at all of us approaching out of breath. I know he had to have been thinking"damn it, yall come on." He had legs like a giraffe and could cover the mountains like a mountain goat. I miss those days so much. Life was so much simpler and about one 100th of the amount of people hunting. It was a special time with vast numbers of turkeys to hunt.

The reason your gobbler is in the thickets is because that is where the breeding hens are living this time of year. Once the nesting season starts, the hens are going to seek the cutover or naturally thick areas that offer the best nesting. A gobbler knows where the hens stop to dust and wallow prior to going to the nest. The reason they go around and around those tickets is because hens are territorial and have different parts of the cutover that belong to them due to pecking order. The hens form dominance just like the gobblers, so the dominant hens are going to have the best nesting spots in that particular area. If you pay attention to dust bowls, tracks coming and going in and out of the areas, generally in the road beds because of the softer soil, you find those nesting/breeding homes. The gobblers are going to frequent as many of those nesting area entry points in day as possible to increase thier chances to breed. I grew up hunting my dad, Shorty Bigbee, Doug Camp, Mike Watts and Mr. Waters. They were students of the ways of turkeys and taught me a lot. Had a very fortunate upbringing. I have learned this deal with the nesting sights as I have spent my adult turkey hunting life hunting a lot more timber farmed lands than I did with my mentors prior the timber industry boom. I just heard you question about the gobbler being in the thicket and wanted give my two cents. I spend more time around those thicket in the month of April than anywhere in the woods. It is generally better from 730 to 11 o'clock than hunting right off the roost for me.

What he said about picking a spot and hunting when the birds are quiet is the TRUTH! I always spent all day looking for a bird that would communicate until the spring after heart surgery I couldn’t hike for several months and I called in more birds that year than I ever have. I have been more consistent since because of what I was forced to learn out of necessity. The trick to making it work is doing it long enough to convince your mind that it works and making yourself think without a doubt there is always a bird listening. What a great video and podcast. Thanks guys!

Excellent point! We’ve talked about on the podcast that if you always move/act as though you KNOW there is a Turkey (or a deer) nearby you will hunt better.

Thoroughly enjoyed this podcast. I learned how to turkey hunt with gentleman like coach Watters in the mid eighties while attending college in Scooba, Mississippi. To this day, I still hunt as I was taught. Thanks again for interviewing Coach Watters, I hope you learned from him as I have.

A lot of wisdom in this pod cast. On think that jogs my memory is Mr Dale Rohm telling me to be patient, that turkey has no where to be and will come to you when he's good and ready. I'm well in to my 60's now and there is just so much wisdom and understanding of the hunt, Thank you guy's!
