I seriously think that this is the only Aussie video about the process of using a DMM to check an outlet. Cheers mate.

@@allelectricalau You should do an Aussie tutorial video about ghost voltages and how to detect them in our power points. That'd be a good one to watch. Cheers.

Uhhh mate, I have a slightly different method for isolation. You can use your meter in continuity mode on A+E to cause an imbalance in the RCD making it trip; Then you've instantly tested the RCD and isolated in one hit.

Not Sure ive never had to test one probably its earthing continuity. Testing between the mat and earth on your power point.

Our Power went out in half the home, normal to have lights etc on, but how can we locate the faulty switch? we unplugged every power point, and the RCD still trips, luckily we have 15am fuses and wiring going to our shed, so we have managed to keep our fridge freezers going. When we open the meter box the RCD trips every time when we try to reset it. At the moment there is a long long wait for a sparky, can anyone advise if there is a way of checking which power point is at fault, we had a huge downpour and think rain got into our walls, brick and tile home, we purchased the probe gear etc but it is pointless when there is no power. Do we have to get a sparky out? could it be a damaged wire in the walls?
    Cheers from WA

Most likely water in an outside powerpoint or light. Unplug everything i mean absolutely everything and try resetting it. Once reset plug one thing in at a time until it trips and you have found the problem. But first check outside powerpoints and lights.

@@allelectricalau Much appreciated, will give that a try, we have unplugged everything though, will check the lights and do as you recommend

@@yodadunbar8909 you can also turn all switches off on the switchboard and then turn the mainswitch on then the rcd. Then if the rcd turns on slowly flick the others on one by one. This will narrow down if its a power circuit or light circuit causing the issue.

Please set your Digital or Analogue Multi Meter on the appropriate Ac voltage range before placing the probes into the slots. If you Probe first and then try to set your meter, you may end up damaging your meter as you wander over inappropriate settings.
