  • F1 pit stops haven’t always been the 2-second synchronized dances we see today. In the past, they were much, more dangerous. From the utter chaos of the first F1 pit stops, to no pit lane speed limits to spectacular fuel fires, join me as we take a look at the incredible evolution of the F1 pitstop.
    ➤ Subscribe for more about F1: goo.gl/AbD2f9
Pitstops are something we take for granted in F1 now. They play a huge roll in the outcome of the race and in more recent years have been used by the governing bodies to spice up the sport when it seems as though a couple of teams are making the races a bit dull by winning everything.
They are now mandatory as each car must pit and swap tyres so they have used both stipulated compounds during the race. But have pitstops always played a key role in the outcome of Grand Prix races and how have they evolved over the years?
To answer these questions and remind ourselves of some startling facts, we must go all the way back to the very first car races.

Fun fact about the pit lane limit (the lack of it): Senna set the fastest lap of the 1993 European Grand Prix going through the pit lane where they intended to make a pit stop but abandoned the decision. The lap was more than a second faster than any other lap during any F1 race at Donington. I find it fitting that Senna received a Sonic the Hedgehog trophy that day :D

Absolutely fascinating watching all of those old films. Thanks so much for putting together a really interesting 'story', as it were. It never ceases to amaze me how fast today's crews can go - less than 2 seconds to safely remove and replace the 4 wheels, which I understand weigh a _lot!_
I saw the Guy Martin at Williams programme, where they got him to sign a secrecy contract about how they go about their pit stops. The car may not be where it should be, but they can still turn out some cracking stops. They led the way in recent years regarding the sheer speed of the job.
Having been watching F1 since right at the end of the 60s/start of the 70s (I can't be sure which, I was very young - I just have 'photograph' memories of certain moments in numerous races from that time), I've seen some utter disasters in the pits. Even if the Verstappen one had never been shown again, I don't think I'd ever forget a moment of it. It was terrifying to watch, so heaven only knows how scary it was for everyone there!
Looking forward to your next video :-)

When refuelling went away for 2010, the Red Bull team was the first one to realize how important changing tyres became, because it would dictate the length of the pit stop. So they immediately set about coaching their pit crews and working on not just their coordination and fitness but their mental game as well. Certainly not as significant as Adrian Newey's RB6, but definitely a factor in their dominance back then, and of course they continue to be the fastest team in the pits to this day.

Or 300 liter in 27 seconds from sepcial refuel riggs design by Colin Chapman. Brabham got the Idea for airjack Indy where they had been using them since 1950s. Good history and glad you started at the start rather than 1950 - which nearly everybody else tends to do.
Tyre failure pre the 1960s was as much to do with the simple rubber compounds and internal structure used in tyres in those days. By the 1950s, most races were being run on decent tarmac but tyres still failed.

Ahhh... Smoking, drinking, and racing. Good times!!
All joking aside, I think cars should be able to pit as much or as little as the team wants. I like the different strategies of trying to make sure tires and fuel last the entire race (saving pit times) vs teams choosing to run softer tires and less fuel (faster cars but lose pit times). That can help even the field if a team performs their overall plan perfectly. That would be great. Today, there's probably an 80% chance of the winner being 1 of 5-6 drivers and from 1 of 3 teams (Mercedes, Ferrari, or Red Bull). The money cap may help even the field some but this idea would help even more.

At one point in a 1970s shot, the guy who appears to be in charge of the pit crew is standing in the way in front of the car, and a crew member body checks him while trying to actually do the work.
The slower pace of innovations is shown by the long time in between the 2 tries at half- fuel you mentioned; years apart!
Slicks, air jacks, pressurized fuel, wheel guns and nuts, all took decades. Amazing

I really miss the time when cars had different (and unknown to the others) fuel loads at the start and when 'overcut' was the name of the game rather than 'undercut', because to pull off an 'overcut' a driver had to produce qualifying pace at the end of the stint, but a light car always coincided with worn tyres, while fresh rubber also meant one had like 2/3 of a tank of fuel!

I've been watching the back catalog of F1 races, starting with the 1981 season, and what's shocking to me is the sheer number of people on pit row - not just team members but apparently members of the public! When a car comes into the pits, it's like they all run out to see what's going on it. It's truly amazing that more crew and spectators weren't hurt or killed in that era. In current racing, I never tire of watching a 2 second pit stop. As I think David Hobbs said, in some places, you could get a ticket if that were stop sign!

Interesting that in the 60’s when Lotus races at Indianapolis, they used the pit crews from the NASCAR team the Wood Brothers to do the pit stops for Jimmy Clark.
It was an odd mix seeing the orange and white STP clad pit crew servicing the beautiful BRG Lotus at Indy.

3:57 Juan Manuel Fangio was driving a Maserati, NOT a Ferrari in the German Grand Prix of 1957. In fact, he beat the three Ferraris (Mike Hawthorn, Peter Collins and Luigi Muso) in that race by short-shifting.

Great analysis. All those refuelling fires reminds me of Pedro Diniz in 1996 catching fire on track when his Ligier’s engine exploded. The Sun’s classic headline with a picture of Pedro’s car engulfed in flames....”Diniz In The Oven”....he got out fine 👍

    • @TicoTimeCR

True, but only because they make them softer now. Softer tires = more grip = more speed. That's why you rarely see the "hard compound" tire run in races today. Soft & medium are so much faster that an extra pitstop is worth it. Nothing magical in those old tires.
