If you dont have a WP screw or switch, here’s how to disable WP. 1. Open the back/bottom as you would doing the screw/switch. 2. Take out the battery from the PCI port and put it somewhere safe. 3. Plug in you charger, obviously because you have no battery. 4. Login to Chrome like you usually would. 5. Do Ctrl + Alt + T to open Chromes Command Line 6. Type in shell 7. Type in sudo sh 8. Type in flashrom -wp-disable 9. Type in flashrom -wp-status to see if WP is disable, if it is, turn of the computer, put back in your battery, and boot up like you always do! (Keep charger in when booting up)

Just bought an Acer C720 Chromebook, Chrome OS was outdated, so I installed Linux Mint 19, and a new battery, super easy, About 7 hours mobile, does everything I need it to do. Great video , very interesting.
Just to confirm, I followed this process and it seems to have worked for me without issue. There were a few steps along the way that did not line up with the instructions, but these were most likely due to a difference in the make and model of my Chromebook. The differences were small enough where I was able to go with my gut and kind of wing it, but I am currently running GalliumOS on my Chromebook and there seems to be no real loss of any keys or functions. Thank you very much for the video.
Thank you very much my friend! I'm a computer science student and I bought the same chromebook to experiment in 90$ (I'm from Latin America, Venezuela) and I was surprised how limited ChromeOS is. I really appreciate your work, now I have a computer where I can program away from the charger for 6 hours. New subscriber!

I had two older laptops that God wouldn't let me get rid of. They were so slow that I couldn't use them anymore. I went to RUclips looking for something. As I was there I heard the word about making a slow older computer like new. I stop and listen. I knew this was from God. I watched several videos on Linux. I believe you was the man God used to speak directly to me. You mentioned Zorin os was the best. You had on a white shirt and it was a close up of you. When you said Zorin OS is the best it was God speaking through you directly to me. I am totally grateful to you. I have a bad back and now both my old laptops are working again. Thanks for putting this guide together. It worked great and I'm quiet pleased with how well my old Asus C200 is running GalliumOS. It's been awhile since I've used a Linux distro as my daily driver and I look forward to playing with this new/old toy.
Thanks for an awesome instructional video! I was able to successfully install GalliumOS on my HP Chromebook 14 G4 (Kip-Bay Trail). I have installed several distros on older windows laptops, but never flashed a ROM before. I'm amazed at how well Gallium OS works on my Chromebook. The battery life went up 2+ hours. I am getting over 8 hrs mixed use running Firefox and can get 10 if I keep video streaming at a minimum. It also feels quicker and more responsive than ChromeOS. Your instructions were very easy to follow. I highly recommend this video as the go to for anyone wishing to do a full install with a similar device. Well done!
Great video!!! Will use this tutorial when our Chromebooks get to their end of update life. Checked out your other videos and now subscribed - really enjoyable content. Hope your channel goes far!
Thanks, man. Worked for me although I had to use Etcher to create the USB since I was getting an error when booting from USB after creating it with Rufus. I also had to NOT connect to wifi during install because it kept crashing. Once i finished install i rebooted and connected to WIFI and updated the packages (Disclaimer for people reading this: there were some other little parts I had to google but for the most part, this method worked)
Many thanks for this - I now have GalliumOS running on my Toshiba Chrome Book 2 - Which I now know is Intel Baytrail! All the key things work - on/off button - wifi - LAN (through USB adaptor) HDMI out and headphones. A few false starts (think this was because the chromebook is different from yours - or maybe I didn't understand completely all the steps!) and I had to re-install ChromeOS a one point. But now boots up straight in to Gallium. Last issue was fixed by running the install without wifi connected. And now those nasty messages about it being unsupported by Google after September have gone too. Thanks again m8

Even before the recent EOL for my Acer C720, it was no longer getting Chrome OS improvements like the ability to run Android apps or Linux programs, so I'd been using crouton for quite a while. EOL and another gentleman's RUclips video (he had a C720,too, so I felt more confident) pushed me over the edge, and I ran first NixOS, and now Manjaro (KDE flavor) on it. I will definitely give Gallium a look. Now that you have Linux on your Chromebook, what have you done do get around Chromebook keyboards not having keys like HOME, END, PG UP and PG DOWN?

Thanks very helpful. Chrome os leaves lots to be desired. My laptop is an old Acer 15 CB3-532 series. Next I'll look into the processor type so to dnld the correct Linux opsys and etc. . On another machine, an ancient desktop I have, I'm using dual boot Win 10 and Linux Mint and like it really well getting used to it. On this Acer 15 I just want to replace chrome altogether. As far as processor type, I think that's a Braswell. According to GalliumOS's website, your chromebook model is indeed supported, so this ISO should work for you. galliumos.org/releases/3.0/galliumos-3.0-braswell.iso

I've got a newer Lenovo Chromebook, and it forced me to backup the firmware to a USB/SD device in order to continue, heads up. I tried to just press Enter without backing it up, but it just kept going back to the main menu instead of moving forward to install the full ROM firmware.

Thank you very much for that video. 👍👍👍 One question: What do i have to do after succesfully install of Gallium? Screw in the write protection screw and anything else?
I can't get access to the WP screw (Lenovo 3 '11) so I just tried to continue, But later, I dont get a "install/update Full ROM firmware" option , It says "Install/Update UEFI (Full ROM) Firmware" but that option is greyed out and doesnt let me select it. When I try and continue throughout that part, I don't get the boot option (bunny) screen. Been at this for 3 days, any advice?
I followed everything ; after i entered "boot manager" i cant select "EFI usb device", i have those options : default boot, boot menu, boot manager, advanced configuration, reboot. when i press default boot , i have 2 options : GalliumOS live image and installer, and GalliumOS Console. Either leads to a black screen and "error : unknown filesystem. alloc magic is broken at 0x53957c0: 52ba080. Aborted. Press any key to exit." and i go back to the BOOT menu. any idea...?
i have a question, instead of wiping chrome os and installing gallium instead, can i install on a usb. So if i plug it in i can boot to gallium and if i don’t want to, I can just unplug and boot into chrome os. I already know that I need to install RW_legacy but after that i am stumped
I am sorta using an AMD processor on my chromebook and can't seem to find in which processor model type i fit in, in order to commence the Gallium OS download
After I try to install gallium OS, I get a pop-up window that says “UBI - Partman crashed with exit code 10. Further information may be found in link. Do you want to try running this step again before you continuing if you do not, your installation may fail entirely, or may be broken.” How can i fix this?
Tried to download Linux mint lite edition, didn't work out couldn't use my keypad/keyboard and only can controle a limited amount of thing. Had to unplug the battery because could not shutdown my Chromebook xD. Currently trying your suggestions but think I may broke some things...
I made it to the rabbit screen. After that, it takes me to a screen that says "Booting from eMMC Device failed." I do not understand how to progress past this part.
Very helpful video! Question: is it good practice to replace WP screw after we successfully install Gallium Linux? Or is this an unnecessary step? Thank you!
@@LowDoughTech Interesting, okay this is good to know. I found a similar model (Dell 3180) online recently that I plan on installing Gallium OS on, so have been doing lots of studying and preparing while it ships. Thanks for the speedy reply - cheers!
Hey! Nice video! I will try to install the Gallium Os today. I have an Asus C523NA, with Linux Mint but I have no audio from the speakers. I have tried Zorin Os too but still no sound. Apparently there is a common issue with the Apollo Lake and Kabylake chromebooks... But I'll give it a try. Hopefully I'll get the sound working.

Help: I tried to install GalliumOS on my Acer C720 / Intel Celeron 2955U with the Haswell version of GalliumOS. I get to the screen with the rabbit; however when I try to load the GalliumOS image from my USB stick I get the following message: error: unknown filesystem. alloc magic is broken at 0X73f09740: 73e2e100. I tried to download GalliumOS image on different USB sticks but I keep getting the same message. I used Rufus to create the bootable USB stick with the recommended settings. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Hmm. It could be the difference between a legacy boot vs UEFI boot. Try the UUI installer from Pendrivelinux.com to make your USB, I think it's worth a shot, anyway.
@@LowDoughTech thank you very much for your reply. i found a way to make it work. the problem was when creating the bootable usb stick using rufus. i had to change the settings from the recommended default ios mode to dd mode on the rufus app and after that my chromebook was able to read the usb immediately. the key is to make sure you are careful when creating your bootable usb stick using rufus. thank you
nxrvnv unfortunately I don't have the chrome book anymore, I built this one as a gift for a friend, so I can only offer speculation; try using UUI from Pendrivelinux.com instead of Rufus to make your USB installer, and see if that makes a difference. It's a place to start, and one more thing to rule out.
Dear friend, I watched several videos for doing this, I follow instruction with care step by step trying to fix in my HP G5 Chomebook. Unfortunatelly nothing work. Want to replace Chrome?? 1) Remove the bios screw 2) Flash the bios following the mrchromebook, tech advise 3) Install Fedora 34 and actualize it. All the other alternatives (Ubuntu Web, Gallium linux V1, V2, V3, Linux Zorin ). Do not work. Have fun
I fixed it after 3 days of hard work, but i really suggest putting some steps before the Bunny page. Everyone reading this, SAVE YOUR STUFF ON THE USB. IT WAS THE ONLY METHOD FOR ME TO RECOVER IT. OTHER OPERATING SYSTEMS JUST GLICHED FOR ME WHEN I DOWNLOADED IT TO RESTORE FUNCTIONALITY TO IT.
@@shipuku0305 Hmm, I always recommend Ubuntu as the first OS to install. It will get rid of everything and give you proprietary drivers. Those proprietary drivers is super handy to have. There could be wifi, touchpad, gpu, cpu, and etc types of proprietary drivers that the laptop needs to function with. Some linux distros and "flavors" do not have those proprietary drivers.

Does anyone know if installing GalliumOS on a chromebook requires deleting all of the data on a chromebook? I might have some important documents on there but if that's the case I might be able to just put it on some cloud storage for a bit.
Installing Gallium under this method will indeed wipe out all of the files on your Chrome OS install. The method that I cover here completely formats your hard drive before installation.
ok i love your vid and you have great and eazy to follow instructions... But to be honest this is like the therd video i have tryed and none of them work for me... Do you have any other suggestions...
Hi, I'm having the same problem. I followed your instructions to a t, but it refuses to load the Gallium os. Everything works great to that point. After I make the selection to boot from USB it pops up - error: unknown filesystem. alloc magic is broken at 0x1ffd97c0: 1fefe080 aborted. Press any key to exit.- I have an Acer Chromebook 11 cb3-111/131 Gnawty. It uses the same firmware as yours I think, the Bay Trail. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Sort of, but the results can be iffy. There is a program in Linux called "Wine" it emulates the ability to run Windows programs. I ranges from running some of them perfectly to others not at all.
You can do the first option, it allows you to use ChromeOS and GalluimOS. You do ctrl+L (Linux) or ctrl+D (ChromeOS Dev) only problem is less storage space personally my Chromebook when on ChromeOS keeps beeping about my storage is full.
According to google, that model uses a Celeron N2940 processor, and according to www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Celeron-N2940-Notebook-Processor.117417.0.html , that's a Bay Trail Processor, for which Gallium does indeed provide a build. galliumos.org/releases/3.0/galliumos-3.0-baytrail.iso
For me ChromeOS is just plain useless, like a handicapped version of Android because most of the apps I'd WANT to use on a "laptop" won't even run on a Chromebook. So Linux it is... I kind of prefer Manjaro with the plasma desktop, already comes with most of the apps/packages I like using. The warning at 1:38 though... LMAO I make "unauthorized mods" to practically EVERYTHING I own, I seriously need to get one of those shirts that says "I void warranty's"! 😎

It says "Install/Update UEFI (Full ROM) Firmware" but that option is greyed out and doesnt let me select it. When I try and continue throughout that part, I don't get the boot option (bunny) screen. Been at this for 3 days, any advice?
Thanks! this video is going to be very helpful!
Very helpful! thank you!
Great video. My acer cb3-111 is out of support. Just installed gallium. Let's see what we can do.
Aborted. Press any key to exit."
and i go back to the BOOT menu. any idea...?
found the answer on a forum, in Rufus, i needed to select "DD mode" and not "ISO mode" after i pressed "start", it worked :)
i have a question, instead of wiping chrome os and installing gallium instead, can i install on a usb.
The newer Chromebooks don’t have that protective screw
After I try to install gallium OS, I get a pop-up window that says “UBI - Partman crashed with exit code 10. Further information may be found in link. Do you want to try running this step again before you continuing if you do not, your installation may fail entirely, or may be broken.” How can i fix this?
Tried to download Linux mint lite edition, didn't work out couldn't use my keypad/keyboard and only can controle a limited amount of thing. Had to unplug the battery because could not shutdown my Chromebook xD. Currently trying your suggestions but think I may broke some things...
Did you ever figure this out?
This does not work on Lenovo N22, the website says it supports the N22 but the script says it does not.
I'm with you. If you use Chrome, you run into its limitations pretty early on. OK for some, but.......
@Nick te Lindert still pretty limited nonetheless for my uses
I made it to the rabbit screen. After that, it takes me to a screen that says "Booting from eMMC Device failed." I do not understand how to progress past this part.
Very helpful video! Question: is it good practice to replace WP screw after we successfully install Gallium Linux? Or is this an unnecessary step? Thank you!
Good question! I didn't replace mine. It's not necessary.
@@LowDoughTech Interesting, okay this is good to know. I found a similar model (Dell 3180) online recently that I plan on installing Gallium OS on, so have been doing lots of studying and preparing while it ships. Thanks for the speedy reply - cheers!
Help, I followed the instructions. Now it doesn't boot at all. Screen turns on, but there is nothing happening.
Hey!
I had the same sound issue when I installed Lubuntu on this Chromebook. Gallium resolved the issue for me.
@@LowDoughTech thank you for your answer. I'll get back with the result soon 😁🙏
@@LowDoughTech I have just installed Gallium OS but still no sound. Do you think that i should remove the firmware write-protect screw and try installing it by Full Firmware / ROM ? Cause i have installed with option n°1, RW_LEGACY. Do you think that could make a differnce? Thanks !
@@CosminAnton You could try it I suppose, unfortunately I'm not in a position to make any guarantees or suggestions.
@@LowDoughTech I have opened it and there is no WP screw :)))) on my model i need to disable the battery somehow and bla bla...For now I think I'm done. I will reinstall crome os and i'll use the linux apps with crostini....It's my bad, I should have reed the Gallium harware compatibility first....and then buy the chromebook...:))) But thanks anyway!
I followed everything in the video instead it seems I have a issue I can't get in my laptop ?
press crlt+alt+t to open terminal if you cant do crlt+t to open it.
My chromebook has no screws.

Aborted. Press any key for exit._ Any suggestions of what can be wrong and how I can fix this issue? Please let me know.
@@LowDoughTech thank you very much for your reply. i found a way to make it work. the problem was when creating the bootable usb stick using rufus. i had to change the settings from the recommended default ios mode to dd mode on the rufus app and after that my chromebook was able to read the usb immediately. the key is to make sure you are careful when creating your bootable usb stick using rufus. thank you
I have Dell Chromebook 11 model 3220 can tell which best Linux Distro I prefer Debian ubuntu just completely removed chromes OS
Does the procedure work, with a locked chromebook? I bought a chromebook with a school account, sorry if you don't understand, I'm using a translator.
I have an older 32-bit Samsung 2. ..the script is 64bit....anyway to flash bios? I could not find a guide anywhere.......
if your install keeps on crashing, turn off wifi and update after the OS is installed..work for me , i have the same Dell chomebook...
Hi
after installation no audio on Acer C720 , rest of the things works perfectly fine, any advice
thanks
would this work with a chrome book with a MediaTek mt8173 proceser
when you login is there any trace of chrome os at all or is it all gallium great video by the way
It's 100% Gallium. No ChromeOS at all.
You Can keep chrome OS if you want to, but that may be a different method.
dude I need help, after I reboot my chromebook and the bunny icon shows up,it takes me to a menu that says startup.nsh
nxrvnv unfortunately I don't have the chrome book anymore, I built this one as a gift for a friend, so I can only offer speculation; try using UUI from Pendrivelinux.com instead of Rufus to make your USB installer, and see if that makes a difference. It's a place to start, and one more thing to rule out.
Teach me how to boot again original chrome os
Dear friend,
I watched several videos for doing this, I follow instruction with care step by step trying to fix in my HP G5 Chomebook. Unfortunatelly nothing work.
Want to replace Chrome??
1) Remove the bios screw
2) Flash the bios following the mrchromebook, tech advise
3) Install Fedora 34 and actualize it. All the other alternatives (Ubuntu Web, Gallium linux V1, V2, V3, Linux Zorin ). Do not work.
Have fun
Great!! But.. how do I know what processor I have?
You can find out by googling your specific model of chromebook.
@@LowDoughTech My ASUS C202s chromebook has an Intel Celeron N3060 1.60GHz but i did not see Apollo lake or anything like that.. What DO I have??
Wait.. now I know It's Brasswell.. sorry..
Oh, cool. Glad you got it! :)
@@LowDoughTech Cool!! Just one question, is this possible on ARM based chromebooks? If so, can you make a vid about that? Thanks
My chromebook is stuck in the bunny page and it looks different
I’m having audio problems with my system, is this a hardware problem?
Hey, thanks for the information you have share it really helps, I have quere. I have the lenovo thinkpad chromebook 13 the 8gb ram model. I do all the steps but when choosing the usb everything goes black, any ideas? thank you for your help.
Hmm. Not sure, but off the top of my head, make double sure it's actually in developer mode, and make sure the write protect screw is removed.
How to delete gallium and its partition?
I did everything but the problem is that the is no sound
Everything was going well until the reboot after firmware, mine wont boot up
Can't find the WP screw in my HP Chromebook 11 G5, help appreciated.
Without seeing the motherboard, I couldn't even take a guess, however, maybe this post can help you.

does this work for samsung 4 chromebooks?
what about the other Chromebooks?
Can you help me when I go to boot gallium there is an error
Does anyone know if installing GalliumOS on a chromebook requires deleting all of the data on a chromebook? I might have some important documents on there but if that's the case I might be able to just put it on some cloud storage for a bit.
Installing Gallium under this method will indeed wipe out all of the files on your Chrome OS install. The method that I cover here completely formats your hard drive before installation.
Would this work for Parrot OS?
ok i love your vid and you have great and eazy to follow instructions... But to be honest this is like the therd video i have tryed and none of them work for me... Do you have any other suggestions...
Could you give me a little more detail on which step things are failing?
@@LowDoughTech it is say all is failing... i will try it again and try to send you an screen shot of what i see...
Ok right now all it is saying is...
ERROR: unknown command: cd;
Trying to send a screan shot but youtube won't let me...
Hi, I'm having the same problem. I followed your instructions to a t, but it refuses to load the Gallium os. Everything works great to that point. After I make the selection to boot from USB it pops up - error: unknown filesystem.

I have an Acer Chromebook 11 cb3-111/131 Gnawty. It uses the same firmware as yours I think, the Bay Trail. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
my acer c720 is esc+refresh+power!!??
The blatant planned obsolescenceof a chromebook is just an insult and downright waste !!
Gallium hasnt been updated since 2018 or 2019
I can't find efi usb
is it possible to run executable files with gallium OS?
Sort of, but the results can be iffy. There is a program in Linux called "Wine" it emulates the ability to run Windows programs. I ranges from running some of them perfectly to others not at all.
i wish their was an other way to install linux without opening your chromebook
Unfortunately, that's impossible at this point.
You can do the first option, it allows you to use ChromeOS and GalluimOS. You do ctrl+L (Linux) or ctrl+D (ChromeOS Dev) only problem is less storage space personally my Chromebook when on ChromeOS keeps beeping about my storage is full.
How do I undo it
Can i use a hp 14 x010hr???i dont wanna brick it
According to google, that model uses a Celeron N2940 processor, and according to www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Celeron-N2940-Notebook-Processor.117417.0.html , that's a Bay Trail Processor, for which Gallium does indeed provide a build. galliumos.org/releases/3.0/galliumos-3.0-baytrail.iso
I just bought this same chromebook for not $50... _sigh_
