  • One of the biggest legacies of the 100 Years War was the story of Joan of Arc. Up to the point where Joan came to the fore-front of the French Army, the English Army were winning heavily. However Jane's leadership helped to turn the tide in the war for the French. She is remembered today as the teenage peasant girl who took control of the French Army, however her story began when she was just 13.
At the age of 13 she experienced visions and was visited by 3 saints. They told Joan to lead the French Army and expel the English from her country. Following this she managed to convince a commander to provide her with an escort to the Dauphin, Charles. Here she persuaded Charles to give her control of the army, and she set her sights on lifting the Siege of Orleans. She successfully managed to end the siege and saw off the English. She then carried out further military campaigns being just a teenager at the time.
She dressed in male armour and clothes at the time to disguise herself and protect herself, but she would later be captured and turned over to the English. The English deemed her to be a witch or a heretic as they could not believe that a teenage girl had managed to defeat part of the English army. They put her on trial and Joan although she put up a staunch defence was found guilty of heresy and she was sentenced to death.
In front of a crowd of around 10,000 in Rouen Joan was burned at the stake in horrific fashion. Many of those who witnessed the burning of Joan said how they made a mistake and executed a saint.
