Very Interesting stuff Im a Gracie Barra Black belt. I usually enjoy putting myself in lasso guard from top to set up my passes and leg drags. I have always felt it was a weak guard. I also believe their are few options from the lasso guard itself and that its real strength only came when you combined it with other guards. It seems in the video that you've taken classic sweeps and positions and combined the strengths of both. Im very curious your opinion on this and if you see Lasso guard more as an addition or do you feel it grants the respect of being a position of its own. Great video either way I learned a ton thank you.

Not the owners of the material and not a black belt yet(recently got my brown) but I´ll give you my five cents anyways: Lasso is a great open guard tool, especially for people struggling to get comfortable playing open guard. It gives one definitive grip that A) kills one of your opponents grips B) anchors you tightly to your opponent C) depending on the depth of the lasso hook, gives you a great tool to create distance or take it away, breaking posture and D) makes it difficult to pass, buying you more time in every engagement to experiment with different grips on the other side.
These are all things newcomers to open guard struggle with, as so many other open guards are two or three-points of contact positions where if one grip or contact point fails, the entire position falls apart and you get passed in an instant. Not a problem if you are experienced and confident as you quickly identify what changes need to be made but a big problem to newbies. With a strong lasso hook the problem is simplified to basically making sure your head doesn't get controlled, which is also a great skill to learn.
Lasso is still my go-to position to try to get to against strong open guard passers. It doesn't always work(what does?) but I feel like it gives me the best opportunities to settle in and work offensively by first establishing a strong defense.

@@Darwinist Great reply thank you! I think more and more lasso guard is becoming popular in the current meta game in bjj. This is due to the fact of guard passing getting better and better from guys that can effectively use headquarters and a knee-cut style split squat to put them in a position of advantage while passing. Like you said it provides a "strong defense" however if given the choice I will still always choose to be passing lasso on top than to be in it on bottom. (Unless I'm sparring with Nicholas meregali or a Marcos Tinoco)
