Mark was one of the nicest characters in the show. He always looked out for his family, helped people and of needed to he could handle himself. To see him go through this was horrible.
If Peggy is going to discriminate against Mark Fowler for having AIDS, she may as well discriminate against anyone who is Black, Indian or Lesbian. This was a very admirable Storyline. It really shows that The UK can teach The US about Writing Storylines.
She was completely in the wrong of course, and as he pointed out he had HIV not AIDs at that point, but her discrimination was based on ignorance and fear surrounding how the virus is transmitted that is why she didn't want him in the pub. That is not connected to race or ethnicity. Not sure why you had to drag black or asian people into this especially when they face discrimination already in other situations, perhaps you didn't mean it that ways but its almost as if you are suggesting all black or indian people have AIDs which is discriminatory. I do agree this storyline educated so many people though but let's stay on topic though.
Barbara Windsor hated doing these scenes. She got loads of hate mail from angry fans. She even had a friend at the time who was dying from AIDS so she must of hated Peggy more than anyone during this. Peggy was so up herself then and she learned a lesson from it. She came to regret it and Mark became a close friend to her after that. He reached out to her when she had breast cancer and it created a bond between them.
I always wonder what the other people in the pub who aren’t really local or regulars think when someone starts making one of these dramatic speeches and everyone goes quiet.
This was brilliant!! I think alot of people were ignorant where HIV was concerned til this point and this helped people who knew nothing about it understand more very well done !
Still by far my favourite Eastenders moment to date. This ranks up there with there with Den and Ang's sudden Christmas' divorce paper! This was a Ground breaking moment! No other soap anywhere in the world would touch on this taboo subject at this time. Just amazing to watch it, even in 2017
alex jones she did. When she got her breast cancer diagnosis. She confided in Mark. They became good friends after that. Until the whole baby Louise custody chaos. That put a damper on their friendship.
It didn't seem to bother Grant, which is surprising. They were despicable treating him the way they did. Even if they were ignorant and scared they could have treated him more kindly, showed some compassion. Instead they acted like he had done something terrible to them personally, they were so angry with him!
Because it is now the 21st century and any misconceptions about HIV and AIDS are now long been cleared. That and Linda and Kat are much younger than Peggy
As legendary as Peggy Mitchell maybe, I'd have to say that she was totally out of order with the way how she discriminated Mark Fowler just because of his HIV condition!!
This is before hiv/aids was known enough too know it’s only contracted via sex/used needles. People just assumed if u have hiv it can be transmitted like covid
Out of order but probably common behaviour at the time. I have gay friends in their 50s-60s who say they were regularly chucked out of pubs by landlords just for looking or sounding gay, because of association with HIV. Scary how recent this was.
A truly powerful and memroble scene .Mark is to be throughtly comemened for standing up to Peggy. This is a great example for all of us. We should all stand up against the peggy Mitchell's of this world. And not just with regard to prejudice against people with marks condition. But all other predjudices. From Michael from Yorkshire and proud of it.
You know what's so sad. Two US Soap Actors died of Aids related illness. Chris Bernau who played Alan Spaulding #1 on Guiding Light from 1977-1990 and Terry Lester who played Jack Abbott #1 on The Young & The Restless. A lot of Folks from Broadway who also died of The Disease including Michael Bennett & Michael Peters who did the Broadway Version of Dreamgirls before it became a Movie.
This was heavier than what was seen on All My Children. .Barbara Windsor admitted she got alot of Shade from folks. Sadly enough her dementia got worse to the point she was watching the show and she said to her Husband "I sued to Work In That Pub You Know."
Happy heavenly birthday to Mark Fowler, 55 today! These scenes are so important then, today ( with zacks diagnosis) and also educating the public, and fighting stigma! Todd Carty is a talented gentleman!
EastEnders won the Best Drama Series Bafta the following year, 1997, and quite frankly scenes such as this pretty much got them that award. That halcyon period when, at it's best, it was the UK's best drama series.
From 1995 to 1996 there was a recurring Character on Guiding Light named Wyatt who played an HIV Counselor who also had HIV. His real name was Keith Christopher who did travelling Tours of Shows most notably The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas. He got sick in 1982 and he thought it was Leukemia but it was a platelet for HIV. Sadly enough he would die of AIDS related illness on February 23 1998.
Watched this countless of times, this was important television. It taught me that HIV was the virus and AIDS was the disease. Forgive my ignorance and others.
Hi I'm roof I could not help but notice the draft coming in as I came down. Sorry Peggy I just could not stay up their any longer. I think Grant had size 12 on at the time.
Peggy was just a gobby judgemental old cow who thought she could say what she wanted because her sons would back her up, which made it even better when Grant actually stood up for Mark here 😂
Why did Mark make out HIV was totally different to aids? Aids is what you get after you get HIV. So it’s not like they were two completely separate things.
I remember Barbara Windsor saying she hated having to act out these scene's as she had real life friends who were HIV positive
@Rix Mace that is dark! But funny still..
She was against doing it until the writers gave her notes that proved people are like that.
So funny how Grant had no time for his mums idiocy.
Thats true. Even though he was a neandarthal at times, his heart and brain were in the right place
@@sohailalrahi1047what do you mean neandarthal
@@Rose_19911*neanderthal
@@Rose_19911he was a bully who occasionally hit women
Very hypocritical since Peggers was the one who gave him HIV
Good for him sticking up for him self. He's my favourite EastEnder's character !
Grant was embarrassed by his mum
Man, his acting is so good. One of my favourite characters on the show. Along with Grant and Dennis.
Back when people needed to be able to act to get on bbc.
Mark was one of the nicest characters in the show. He always looked out for his family, helped people and of needed to he could handle himself. To see him go through this was horrible.
Very heart wrenching to watch another person pouring his heart out telling everyone his feelings.
Wish EE could be like this nowadays, this was good actin' and very good scriptwriting!
Mark Fowler was a great character, this scene was his and glad he stood up to Peggy R.I.P Mark
If Peggy is going to discriminate against Mark Fowler for having AIDS, she may as well discriminate against anyone who is Black, Indian or Lesbian. This was a very admirable Storyline. It really shows that The UK can teach The US about Writing Storylines.
that makes zero sense actually.
She was completely in the wrong of course, and as he pointed out he had HIV not AIDs at that point, but her discrimination was based on ignorance and fear surrounding how the virus is transmitted that is why she didn't want him in the pub. That is not connected to race or ethnicity. 🤣
Exactly imagine never having been there before, all you want is a drink
The moment Peggy says "you've got Aids Mark" you can here the sound of shock reaction. Awesome scene
Would go back to the 80s and 90s any day of the week! That was the real eastenders, now it's a load of bollocks
90s EE was garbage after 1994
Brilliant acting by Todd Carty. This is when Eastenders was worth watching.
How bad is it now?
Peggy "Nigel, you always were a stupid boy..."
Nigel "Do I look like Pike from Dad's Army?"
This was brilliant!! I think alot of people were ignorant where HIV was concerned til this point and this helped people who knew nothing about it understand more very well done !
EE dealt with educating folks about HIV/AIDS alot more intense than on The US Soap Opera All My Children.
They did it better than Emmerdale too. Hollyoaks was ok but it should have been done with a different character
Lol look at how young Carol is here hahaha
this was 1996,it was boxing day 91 he told his parents
A man walks in a pub. "What the hell are you doing here".
Well i have come to get my haircut aint i. I must have taken a wrong turn.
Fantastic acting from Todd Carty
His acting is incredible. He really sold it and make it believable 🙌💯
Still by far my favourite Eastenders moment to date. This ranks up there with there with Den and Ang's sudden Christmas' divorce paper! This was a Ground breaking moment!
No other soap anywhere in the world would touch on this taboo subject at this time. Just amazing to watch it, even in 2017
Hope Peggy apologised after this!
alex jones she did. When she got her breast cancer diagnosis. She confided in Mark. They became good friends after that. Until the whole baby Louise custody chaos. That put a damper on their friendship.
She did. When she had cancer she read up about HIV. She apologised to Mark and Mark forgave her. They became close friends afterwards.
Todd Carty's acting has left me SHOOK😳😳
0:29 this is the most shocking part of the video....There are other pubs in Walford? Where?
When he said "I'm the one that's gonna die" hits you hard
Proper beautifully scripted touching what’s ever happened to all that now?
epic acting
Great acting, really good. It's such a shame now that Eastenders has poor actors.
Eastenders actually had a small bit of credibility back in those days. Had a few decent actors and that. Shows a circus these days, though.
It didn't seem to bother Grant, which is surprising. They were despicable treating him the way they did. Even if they were ignorant and scared they could have treated him more kindly, showed some compassion. Instead they acted like he had done something terrible to them personally, they were so angry with him!
no grant was actually disgusted he told his mum many times that it was wrong
mark was amazing. todd needs an award grant was great sticking up for mark ignoring his mum
Good on mark for telling peggy off .she judges other people
Not hating on Peggy, but I doubt Linda (or Kat, before her) would have done this. I think they'd have both been more supportive!
Because it is now the 21st century and any misconceptions about HIV and AIDS are now long been cleared.
That and Linda and Kat are much younger than Peggy
They wouldn't have been as old fashioned as Peggy
Don't think they would
Wow. Brilliant acting, powerful scene
well done eastenders for once for raising awareness of the stigma about the illness. well played by Todd Carty
Scene shows just what a great actor Todd Carty is.
Amazing stuff, its unimaginable to see perfermances like this on Eastenders today
It's very good they are doing this storyline now in 2023 with Zak and how different it is living with HIV nowadays
As legendary as Peggy Mitchell maybe, I'd have to say that she was totally out of order with the way how she discriminated Mark Fowler just because of his HIV condition!!

Half expect Avid Merrion to turn up saying, I have the Aids as well as the Craig. Lol.

If that was any of my friends or family who had ever had this my Support will be given I’ll raise awareness
Todd carty’s acting in this storyline was top class
This was heavier than what was seen on All My Children. .Barbara Windsor admitted she got alot of Shade from folks. Sadly enough her dementia got worse to the point she was watching the show and she said to her Husband "I sued to Work In That Pub You Know."
Holy Hell Carol Looks So Young. Thank you for uploading. A Very goood scene
I didn't like Peggy in this scene. Even Barbara Windsor agreed that her character wouldn't of acted like this. Mark did well with this HIV storyline 👏
Press 5 for the details....
it was good to see the old Times square video will upload right on mate 👍
"There are other pubs in Walford".....Where?
billydeeuk What about the one Mick and Linda used to run?
It’s tucker from Grange Hill
This video always cheers me up
no wonder janine was how she was
Peggy's attitude here is absolutely disgusting here, u can only get by sexual intercourse but if u use protection and be careful more unlikely not too
You can also get it through blood.
Happy heavenly birthday to Mark Fowler, 55 today! These scenes are so important then, today ( with zacks diagnosis) and also educating the public, and fighting stigma! Todd Carty is a talented gentleman!
Actually 60 - born 1963
Possibly one of the best storylines EE has ever done
Some people forget how nasty Peggy cud b
EastEnders won the Best Drama Series Bafta the following year, 1997, and quite frankly scenes such as this pretty much got them that award.
That halcyon period when, at it's best, it was the UK's best drama series.
grant serves him a pint in a glass then he drinks a bottle?!?! dum-dum-da-dum-dum-dum-da-dum
Todd Carty is a decent actor need to see him more!!
I'm HIV positive
From 1995 to 1996 there was a recurring Character on Guiding Light named Wyatt who played an HIV Counselor who also had HIV. "You positive your infected??"
"I'm not just positive............I'm HIV positive"
Fresh Prince OfTheStruggle nah they gave it to Tucker instead.
Bless him🥺🥺
Eastenders was so much better back then it’s completely lost it’s edge now the 2010’s is when it really started to be piss poor
What a brilliant piece of acting Tom Hanks and the so called cream of acting could not of given a better performance
+Jan von de boom you obviously haven't seen philadelphia
+Daniel Kidd yes I have was not impressed
Well his ice skating funny too lol
Brilliant acting
Watched this countless of times, this was important television. It taught me that HIV was the virus and AIDS was the disease. Forgive my ignorance and others.
Hi I'm roof I could not help but notice the draft coming in as I came down. Sorry Peggy I just could not stay up their any longer. I think Grant had size 12 on at the time.
I miss Peggy :(
What other pubs in Walford are there? Never seen or heard of them, except the Dagmar back in the 80s
Peggy was such a cow and horrible to everyone
Remember watching this live as a kid.
He’s quite possibly the character everyone remembers most from this show.
Peggy had a big mouth when she made those horrible remarks to mark about hiv and aids
What are the other pubs in Walford?
30 or so odd years later.... Zack hudson
Calling someone scum and then wishing death on then? Hypocrite!
i hope not ive just cleaned the ashtrays
RIP in mark Fowler... he had the virus . Not the disease. This video made georgia cry
melodrama at its finest...
Peggy hated Mark but Babs absolutely loved Todd to bits!
Your unbelievable just as she walks in
Peggy was just a gobby judgemental old cow who thought she could say what she wanted because her sons would back her up, which made it even better when Grant actually stood up for Mark here 😂
You cant catch hiv or aids from a beer bottel or you cant catch from anthing it's really said to hear 😢❤
Are there other pubs in Walford?
good question
Amazing acting by yer man Todd Carty !
2:30 Cameo appearance by snoop dogg on the left there!!!!!!
Back in the day where you had to justify yourself for having it. Very upsetting!
Is this what started the Pauline-Peggy feud?
@Floamz yeah i'm a changed man after watching this clip, I always thought peggy was nice. Now I know better.
Last year zack declared he had h.i.v in the pub, then it was never mentioned again!
Coz it’s not a massive issue these days
Dont have time for soaps but that was incredible acting
I loved Mark Fowler when Todd Carty played him. So lovely. Except when he didn't tell Grant that he was the father of Michelle's baby.
Why did Mark make out HIV was totally different to aids? Aids is what you get after you get HIV. So it’s not like they were two completely separate things.
you can live with HIV but not Aids big difference
great acting
Just had his covid vaccine …… oh dear ! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Todd carty is a brilliant actor this was a hard-hitting powerful storyline that really brings out the best in todd as a actor
