I had a mechanic install valve cover gaskets on my clk320 and they failed after about 1k miles! Turns out he used aftermarket as well, and now the guy is trying to sell me all new valve covers claiming mine are warped! Good thing i saw this video. Gonna tackle the job myself with oem gaskets and hopefully have good results.
Yes. Non oem don't last. Always go OEM. Totally worthit. Just a few bucks more.cheers
Peter Zafra thanks so much for the video! Quite possibly saved me a lot of money on repairs!
Awesome low down on replacing this gasket.
Fairly easy but a pain. Lol
One thing I noticed is that both the coils and the valve cover are marked A & B so you can’t really mix up the spark plug wires from the coils! - assuming you follow directions! Very nice to know….
Yep. Cheers
I have a W221 S but it was really informative to see you do this on your W220. Thanks for explaining every step and taking the time to show the problem spots. Btw those coil packs look super new. You must have replaced them not too long before this video.
Never replaced them ever. All original still
Really nice video. About the spark plug wires, MB was smart enough to label the cables. There are letters on the coil packs and corresponding letters on the engine where the boot go on the spark plugs. Fool proof :)
Same engine as a 02 sl500?
Michael DAUGHERTY yes
Man amazing video you really let the viewer inside and really give the 411 on this whole Job from removal of Valve cover and gaskets this is a great video for the DYI Nation keep up the great work and post ...getting ready to take on this job myself Thanks for the insite.
Thank you for watching and subbing. Cheers
"it made a mess back there..." - tiny bit of oil. Looking @ my s500 - did an oil BOMB explode in here?? lol
Very nice video man, engine looking clean as hell! It seems very easy job looking how You do it. I think I must first find the screws/nuts under the thick layer of oil.
Thank You! When I get do this job, I sure will watch this one again.
These cars just make it a little complicated but if you use oem parts, it will all work out. Cheers
4.5 stars out of 5. Super helpful video and I very much appreciate your time and effort in making this.
Cheers
Hi Peter, thank you very much. I have 2003 S500. I think my car have this problem now. But after I watched you did for your car. I will do it myself and use ODM part from Mercedes. Your instruction is excellent, clear and easy to follow. Again thank you.
+Phillip Nguyen awesome. Thank you for watching.
Great video, thank you so much! I'm currently doing this job on a M113 engine in a ML500, and then on a M112 in an ML350 next week. Your video is great!
Thank you. Glad I was able to help. Cheers
Excellent Video, I was going non Oem on the gasket, went Oem for a few bucks more, did the job with the help of this video. Awesome!
+Luis Alvarado awesome. I'm glad you got the job done. Thank you for viewing and subbing
Thanks for the video Ive had the valve covers sitting in my garage for a year but now Im motivated to get it done!
awesome. I'm sure you got this covered. cheers.
Hallo sir my name is lourance I am living in Saudi Arabia watching your explanation you are really good to do this I thing my car need This
Thank you. Cheers!!!!
Good video, great tips. I think you are going to get me going in the right direction. Again thanks for the how-to with all of the tips.
Glad i helped. Cheers
Kudos on the vid!! That engine bay is cleaner than the inside of my car!! I’d love to see how you clean the engine bay on the Benz
Thank you for watching
Nice work. Thank you for the detailed commentary.
Cheers
thank you from france for this video good job !!
thank you for watching.
I like how everything was played out, and put back in. It would be a waste to leak due breather, and valve cover gaskets not being torqued! The info is in interweb and owner's manual!
Peter you are Awesome in teach I did the exact same thing bought after market now bought Oem I will try to fine torque specs for valve covers thank you very mush awesome video I have 2006 s 500 same issues thank you
Thank you for watching and subbing. Cheers
your video helped me make the right choice i will buy the OEM Gasket your right you can tell its thicker on the OEM i appreciate it a lot for making this video :) five stars
CALI BOYZ thank you.
Nice step by step job. Thanks. Tom
Thank you kindly. Cheers
Thank you great job look easy enough I will replace my valve cover next, on my 2006 S500 Mercedes.
T E awesome. I know you can do it. Cheers!
I agree with your comment about OEM. I did the same job on the M112, V6. I used Elring brand. It leaked right away. I did the job 4 times over, 2nd to check it, 3rd to add rtv, 4th to use OEM.
yes. I ended up doing the job twice because I was being cheap. oem is the best way to go. cheers.
did you use rtv with the OEM, 4th time?
Yep, I too foolishly installed Elrings and they started leaking within a couple of weeks. In a couple of days will be installing MB OEM.
Hi. I did not use any RTV at all. i just made sure that all the areas where the gasket runs is super clean with no debris and thats it. thanks.
YES! OEM ALL THE WAY!!!!! aftermarket does not ever last.
great video Pete ,very helpful.and it is the best decision to use OEM parts.but "victor Reinz" and
Fel-Pro both are aftermarket brands that I am using for more than 20 years they're made to meet or exceed OEM specifications. need to look if it's genuine products from V.R. or FELPRO and not an ebay or made in China replica..... another thing is that you tighten by hand no with a torque wrench specs...thanks again...
The coils are marked with diagram to match up with a&b on the cover , don’t need to make a note of it
Great video, thank you Peter! i have 04 S430.
thank you for watching.
Great job bud you make it look easy!! im doing the same job this week thumbs up!
Anthony Quattrocchi you got this!! Cheers
thanks alot man.. you were doing very good clean job. i like it. keep up
+samo sz thank you
+samo sz thank you
Nice job 👍
Cheers
too funny. I have a 2004 and I just noticed some spots on my driveway. All the same problems. I just turned 100,000 miles on her. I don't trust myself doing this project though. Great video. You should come to Massachusetts and help me with mine. I have BEER!!!
Dave Imm you can do it. It's not that hard.
It does not seem that hard but I also need my brakes changed and spark plugs replaced. It's gonna be in the shop anyway so I figured have them do it all once. Great video though. Now I can go in and have the correct wording down instead of just pointing and saying "Fix ... here".
Great video…
Cheers
This is the best video I’ve seen for doing this job. How long did it take to completely get it done?
With cure time , around 3 hours
I dont mean to be so off topic but does anyone know of a trick to get back into an instagram account??
I somehow lost my password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
@Hayes Alexis instablaster ;)
@Wyatt Maximus I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm trying it out now.
I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Wyatt Maximus It did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thanks so much you saved my ass !
Great video Sir. Thanks for taking the time to make it..
you are welcome. thanks for watching. hope it helps you get the job done.
Good job!
Thank you. Cheers
@@PeterZafra Will be ordering OEM soon for the project when the weather warms up.
Thank you for the nice video, Peter.
no problem..thank you for watching and subscribing..cheers
just one thing.. if you removed the cover you also could use the opportunity to change the stem valve gasket without removing the pistons too.
You explain very well for the first time DIY Gal or Guy. But be sure not to mislead them with not having the right tool. That torx bit tool is very necessary to have. becuz sometimes that torx bit can be on tight. Too tight for a first timer DIY person to know the feel of a torq using a mcguyver tool. In other words if you should slip that tight turn that could very well be your last shot at getting it off with the right tool even. So you should get you some torq bit tools for working on your Benz. I envy your tutalege i cannot for the likes of me explain while doing. Once the job is done i can tell u all about it. I guest im action first then debriefer last. LMAO!! Great explaining the job! Cool!
Thanks for the reply. Yup about the torx tool but I did state my disclaimer. Nothing to mislead anyone. Have a great day. Cheers.
Bro thank you so much!
Thank you for watching and subbing. Cheers.
Well representation...
Cheers
Can I just use brake cleaner to clean the gasket channel? Then follow up with a wipe from a clean rag?
Yes you can
I had a mechanic do it. Used a gasket made by elring i believe. Still leaking on exhaust. Now i want to take the screws out and put a medium blue thread lcoked on them to make sire they don't get loose again. What do you think about using it?
No need to use loctite on the screws. I used just oem gasket and no more leaks
Make more videos please... nice job
Thank you. Cheers.
Great video, Peter! This will be very helpful for me. I just bought a 2000 S500 with 63,000 miles. It has a slight leak around the valve covers and I want to replace the gaskets before it gets worse.
I have two questions: 1) What did you use to clean the engine with after you removed the valve covers? 2) Where can I find the torque specifications for the bolts? Sorry if these are dumb questions. I am new at this but willing to learn. Thank you.
+OldSchoolBowler I used engine degreaser for the valve covers but you can use simple green also but you need to make sure it's completely dry. On this video, I didn't degrease the covers. I just wiped it down with a clean rag.
As far as torque specs, Google benzeworld and become a member. It's free. The experts will tune in. I just hand tightened exactly like I showed on the video. Around 12lbs is what I'm guessing. Make sure you use manufacturers specs though. My ways are simply how I did it. (Disclaimer). Thank you.
Great reference video!!
Thank you. Cheers
I have same problem when the engine is hot to 90 then is small oil
?
Great video I going or start on this now. Again good video.
Thank you for watching and subbing. Cheers.
you should turn the engine by hand and inspect any irregularities in the chain. Also inspect the state of the lifters. There should be no gap between the cam lobes and the lifter. It does not take more than a few minutes.
Serban Cordis thank you for the input. the car has less than 73k miles so I didn't find the need to do so. probably next time. thank you for watching.
ive changed out the water pump upper water raditior hoser termistate fan and raditior and im stillover heating
Have you changed the actual thermostat?
Very good Thanks
thank you for watching.
Meant sell valve cover and the bolts on my 04 were all same size maybe because has amg sport package.
Is nothing different s500 and s55AMG 2000 model for only change the cover gasket. The size,??
Good knowledge thank you
Your welcome. Thank you for watching and subscribing.
Perfect video
Thank you sooooo much for a great video. THANK YOU. Do you have a video about the top part that you did 5 years ago?
alibaba66able thank you. I don't have a video of the top part. If it's not leaking, don't mess with it. If it's leaking, buy the gasket maker. I used the orange one. Just make sure when you remove the top parts, clean it very well so the adhesive will stick well. Cheers.
I really appreciate you spending time to share this video with us. I know you recommended oem for most parts. But when it comes to air struts, will you consider Arnott? They seem to have very good reputation. Thanks again.
Apache Cai I personally haven't experienced that part but if you've read great reviews about it, it might be worth the try. After market parts can be at times better than oem but oem is a guaranteed part. It's a catch 22 at times. Haha
I wish you the best. Keep me informed. Cheers
Peter Zafra I just purchased a 2005 S500 a couple days ago with 66,000 miles on it. Will need to replace the vavle cover gasket since the right side leaks quite a bit. Glad I see your video. I asked about the air struts since ppl in forum mentioned it's guarantee to fail at some point. How many miles do you have on yours?
Apache Cai I have 75k on it. Just be careful driving and avoid potholes and your air suspension should be fine.
Thanks for this video. On the driver's side, did you have to disconnect the fuel line or loosen the wiring harness?
I just loosened the harness. Did not remove fuel line.
@@PeterZafra Thanks! I am getting ready to do this on my CLK500
This video will help me about to do my Valve covers on 04 s500. Do you know if Mercedes well the smaller baskets that sits on the main valve cover?
Those you have to make with gasket makers. I did mine once 10 years ago and i used the orange gasket high temp.
Strange you had issues. Did you know the OEM gasket is made by Victor Reinz? It's the same just rebranded by Mercedes, and marked up. I have used VR gaskets with zero issues, and have also had luck with Felpro.
Isn't easier to replace the sparkplugs without the valve cover in place?
It can be
Do i have drain oil from engine before the job?
No you don't
great video!!
Thank you. Cheers!!!!
LOL- I AGREE- DO NOT USE THE VICTR RENZ GASKET- i failed the same way- less than 10k miles i am redoing valve cover gasket again
Great job! Can you post the part number for the gasket used in this video. Thanks
hi. thank you for the comment. I threw the bag away but if you watch the video, I showed the part numbers. you can pause and write it down. thank you again.
Great video. I'll be doing this on my 2004 S430 soon. Is it necessary to rrplace the valve cover bolts? Did you reuse yours?
I reuse the bolts. Cheers
@@PeterZafra Thanks for your prompt response!
Good video, thanks! What if I put a tiny amount of that form a gasket all around that valve cover groove ?
with an oem part, it's not needed.with aftermarket, yes because it comes off. hope that helps. thanks
So you’ve been working on cars for a long time and you don’t have a torque wrench? What’s the torque on the bolts
Sorry. No I don't. You can get the exact manufacturer spec on torque online. I'm not a professional. Thank you. Cheers
Good job.
Thank you.
So how come you do again this valve cover gasket?? How after time start to leak?
The first time I used after market parts. Did not last 10k miles. This time I used mercedes parts. Until today, no leaks. No oil burning.
I have CLK 500 my battery drain 2 days do you have any idea what’s wrong?
You might have a ground somewhere. Also, have your battery checked. It might be bad. If it's new, make sure it's the right one. Mercedes batteries are very different from regular car batteries
What are part numbers for hoses you replaced at 8:28? Are metal clamps used on those hoses?
Is the same procedure used for the 2004 E500?
Yes. It should be the same engine.
It helped thanks
Cheers
that was really helpful thanks. do you do diagnostic on Benz?
Erick Sabal you are welcome. I just work on my cars
I'm about to tackle my S55 with the same problem. I will let you know how it turns out. I was wondering how many hours it took for you to complete this task?
the whole thing with video took me 3.5 hrs. I was taking my time but if you just go straight at it, I say 2.5 hrs is plenty. good luck. you got this.
thnx Peter , its really helpful for me . very soon i have to do the same job for my e500. but do u hav any idea how much dealers want to do the same job....
no problem. as far as dealership, I never went to the actual dealership but an indy shop wanted 385 for the job.
so I'm guessing a dealership would want at least 450.00 yikes.
I charge about $400 for the complete job and that's cleaning the breather caps which takes the time and replacing all of the breather hoses. You mention how much fun it is doing the breather caps alone so you know. OEM gaskets and sealer is the only way I go as well. People don't realize that it takes several hours of labor.
+Marc Smith yup. it sure does take time. cheers.
Good Video! Just a tip, don't disconnect the clips at the coils because that's exactly what happens. I unbolt all of the coils and then release the ignition wires and then roll the entire harness and coils over together. Then when reinstalling, roll the rear one over alone and work your way forward.
Hi I have 07 280 4matic..is it the same thing too sir?
Basically same procedure but different part numbers
Will it be better to remove the top portion first or you leave it on and remove it after the whole valve cover is off
Spencer Fenceroy if the top part isn't leaking, don't remove it. Otherwise, it doesn't really matter.
What products and method do you use to keep the engine and bay so spotless? It looks like it just came off the assembly line. I have sticky sand and dirt every where. I’m hesitant using water in the eng8ne compartment.
MackhackCA I use simple green. It's okay to wet the engine bay as long as you don't directly shoot water at the electrical components. Cheers.
use purple power, get engine warm, not hot!!, remove plastic engine cover / air filter housing, seal off intake to air filter housing hole, use siphon sprayer to coat entire engine and engine bay liberally with purple power. let set for 2-3 min, wash off with garden hose. repeat if necessary. use compressed air to blow ALL the excess water away. i then use tire wet silicone to make engine and engine bay look even better than new!!!!
I've never had a water related electrical problem using this method. I've used this process hundreds of times to clean engines and engine bays.
NEVER USE HIGH PRESSURE WATER SOURCE, AKA car wash. NEVER!!!!!!!!!
❤
A little Long in the tooth but good video. Thanks
I had this done at an indi shop 6 yrs/20k miles ago and labor was $475. I think they used Victor Reinz and atleast one side is leaking. They also used a sealant (part# 003989982010) You can buy the Loctite version of it (I think they make it for MB). I am planning to do this job myself, but thinking of using this sealant on the whole gasket. Now would be the perfect time to do the sparkplugs too.
wow 475. I just went with the oem gasket without any sealants. the last time I did this job, I used vr and it failed in less than 10k miles. it was leaking on a few places. hopefully it works out for you. if it's not too late, may I suggest to use oem.
+Peter Zafra This time only Mercedes Brand Gasket. But thinking of using the Mercedes or Loctite sealant. Thanks
+HJS NA yes. oem only.
I got the spins a few times how much you move the camera quickly.. Great example video.. I would recommend a camera guy, DOn't be cheap ;) great video though!
Sorry for the spinning. I don't do this for a living so getting a camera guy would hurt me more than help me. Just wanted to share my experiences with fixing cars is all. Thank you and cheers
@@PeterZafra Well in that case great job and please do more.. I will start doing mine as well and thanks for the info about the cheap ones.. I laughed because it happened to me.. Keep up the videos My Guy! Ive been to busy tryin to edit mine good :( but I will get there :)
@@PeterZafra through a sub at you :)
Peter, my car only 69,000 miles. This is a first time I did changed my engine oil and oil filter. But I still have problem with service "B" and SRS indicator lights. Please show me how to do that. Thanks,
+Phillip Nguyen you can reset service b but srs light will need to be reset. But you may have a different issue on srs light. Refer to mb forums. I've never had the srs light issue. Let me know once you resolve issue.
J would have a question? Needs he to put of silicon chew 2 quotations of the new joint? Thank you for your answer
i don't quite understand your question. but I didn't use any silicon on any part during the job. I had silicon showing in the video but I didn't use it at all. just use an oem gasket and you shall have not any problems. hope that helps. cheers.
Hello peter thank you for your answer I go proceder as you l to indicate! Good continuation friendly
+gauthrin benjamin thank you for watching.
Peter Zafra speaking in cursive
Good video, What is the torque spec for the valve cover bolts?
I am not quite sure. please check manufacturer specs. my safe guess is 12lbs max. I used my hand as a guess. didn't over tighten but tight enough for sure. cheers
What is that round thing with the 2 brown wires on the very front of the engine? Ours is missing
Im not too sure what that's for.
@@PeterZafra apparently it's a secondary air pump to help expel exhaust gases. Not all models have them so ours doesn't as it's the S320 but the E500 does
Sorry S500 does
Is a sealant a must when replacing this?
Where did you get the parts? Website? Local dealer?
I just went to the dealer. It isn't a big difference in price compared to a local auto parts store using aftermarket parts. But do use OEM parts as it will last a lot longer
O ok do you know what's the best thing to do when you put the key in the ignition y it won't trun.200 s500
Erick Sabal are you getting esp malfunction?
is it same as CLS 500 2008 ??
It should be. I think all the 500 motors are the same. But make sure you get the part for your exact model. 2008? I think that's a 550. Not a 500
not done untill iyou start car let idle for 5 minutes shut car off and lcheck for leaks then itgs done
Thanks for the pointer. Still no leaks. it's April 2020
You mentioned at 21:40 something about have to make your own valve cover for the top part. Could you give me some more infos? I have a leak on the drivers side that I want to fix. Thanks! And also great video!
+Dini Malaj hi. The top small pieces of the valve cover does not have a specific part number. When it leaks, you need to use gasket maker to seal it up. Unfortunately I don't have a video of that work when I did it. But the gasket maker I showed in this video is what I used for that top part when I did the job 5 years ago. Hope that helps.
Peter Zafra did you cut it out or use the liquid that hardness into a gasket
arber gashi I used gasket maker. the one that comes in a tube.
arber gashi it's the one that hardens into a seal. I used the orange one and it's been good for over 5 years now. hope that helps. cheers.
Hi so what r those smaller gaskets called? I need to replace them all 4 thanks
+VAHAN Amy sorry for the late reply. The small ones they don't sell. You would need to make it using gasket maker. The one I used is on this video. High temp orange one.
All the Mercedes I have owned from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s have leaked oil into a hot exhaust from one place or the other. So much for German engineering.
Yep. Almost as though it was set up on purpose.
Or..... you can use a t25 bit lol
Didn't torque didn't silicone?
alolipa hi I didn't torque it. I hand tightened to feel. no silicone either. I used a mercedes oem valve cover gasket which doesn't require silicone. use silicon and torque per manufacturer specs and at your own risk. this video shows how I did it. use as reference only. thank you very much for watching
Peter after the mechanic has fix the gasket into my Mercedes there is some of it is out side is this normal or what
Despe Rado what do you mean outside? is it the gaskets like the one I installed on this video or the small ones up top? is it leaking? if not, then it should be okay.
Peter Zafra go to vid min 28:13
exactly this piece sticking out of it
Despe Rado the corner square part? that's fine.
Despe Rado as long as it's not leaking, you are fine. cheers.
have u done a spark plug how to video?
WARRIOR-of-LOVE 43 I haven't. I didn't have a RUclips channel during the time I changed them. but in this video, I showed how to remove the coil packs. then you use a regular spark plug boot and socket to remove the plugs. just make sure the engine is 100% cold so you don't strip the engine grooves. also make sure you have different length attachments because you have less space as you get towards the fire wall of the engine bay. cheers
Peter Zafra thnx bro!...oh nd did u remove the battery first b4 beginning this job?
My engine started ticking after change valve cover gasket.
Hmmm. Make sure you didn't accidentally disconnect a vacuum line. Valve cover gasket has nothing to do with performance on engine.
Are victor reinz gaskets ok to use on these valve covers?
ICEFOOL hi. I've used Victor reinz and it didn't last 4k miles. I went with oem mercedes on this video. it was only a few dollars more. I'm my opinion, it's worthit.
Peter Zafra Awesome. Are there any websites i can order oem gaskets off of or do i need to go to a mercedes dealer and order them from there?
+ICEFOOL I went to the dealership. It's really only a few dollars more. At most an extra 12-15 bucks
Peter Zafra Fair enough. Thanks for your time.
+ICEFOOL no problem. I know you can get it done. Cheers
