- In this episode I'll describe the various different ways we can load data into Groove Agent using the Load Panel, and how the various agents behave differently depending upon what you're trying to load.
I'm not gonna lie - it's not the most elegant solution...

Groove Agent 5 is my favourite Drum Plugin.
In this series we'll deconstruct it function by function, and figure out how to make great drum rhythms with the minimum of fuss and complexity.
About me:
My name is Anthony Chisnall. I'm a musician & songwriter.
My channel is these things:
1. A place to share my songs - via various 'Back on Track' video series - in which you'll see each song idea evolve step-by-step, with me (hopefully!) improving my song-writing skills as we go.
2. An outlet for me to discuss all things musical - including technical break-downs of software and tools that I use, as well as more wide-ranging discussions of topics that interest me.
I play the guitar (electric, acoustic, and bass), and record all of my own synth-based sounds myself too, but I can't sing very well (huge understatement!), and so my wife, Pauline, who has a lovely singing voice, has come to my rescue. You'll hear her on all of my songs.
All of my music is written in Steinberg's Cubase.
I try very hard to make my videos PRACTICAL and no-nonsense - if I don't use a feature, I'm not going to waste your time trying to sound like an expert on it! This is the stuff I use day-to-day, so I think that's also what you'd like to hear me talking about.

These are by far the best Groove Agent tutorials I have found yet. Great work. Although my slow brain may need to watch them all a few times over again. lol.
My slow brain needed a few attempts to make them :) Thanks for the compliment, I appreciate it!
concur
Can't believe I've had this drum machine for years and didn't fully understand half of these features. Amazing tutorial!
that's very kind of you to say, thanks for the feedback :)
I agree these are the best tutorials I've seen hands down. Finally someone explains groove agent clearly!
That's great to hear, thanks for the feedback :)
Extremely helpful, my friend. I’m a fricken electronics engineer and I find Groove Agent to be an overwhelming matrix of data, destinations and options….it is extremely powerful and capable, but as you mention not always intuitive…then thAnk you for spending your time on these videos
You're very welcome - thanks for the kind feedback :)
19:20 "It can drive you absolutely crazy, it's so unintuitive." That describes Cubase and Gove Agent perfectly! Most difficult thing I've ever tried to learn. In spite of Anthony's valiant efforts, I can't get past step 1. Nothing ever happens the way it's described in the tutorials (I've watched about 20). It's like trying to follow a cooking tutorial when I don't know what a knife is, measuring cups turn into spoons when I pick them up and I can't the refrigerator door open.
Sorry I couldn't help. I really tried!
Literally the BEST videos for Groove Agent I've ever watched! Thank you. I don't know why Steinberg hasn't put out something this clear & concise and that assumes nothing. This is maybe the most unintuitive software/plugin I own but it's finally making more sense now thanks to you!!
That's awesome, thanks so much for your kind feedback!
Excellent. Discovered this clunkiness recenttly and asked Greg Ondo on his FB Cubase hangout the other day re differences between the agents. I also hate the file browser here and mediabay. You explain well and Steinberg could learn a lot by watching your vids and improving the interface accordingly. Many cubase bids are for EDM which I like but could do with more for folk who love all sorts of music styles. You're giving a great foundation. I wish these bids existed a few months ago ! Keep going 😉
Thank you, I appreciate the support! I know, right, MediaBay is almost amazing... but isn't... :)
Wow! This particular video in your series reveals how clunky Steinbergs’ interfaces are, not just GA but their whole software installation apps, licensing apps, media handling and how they all interact. It seems that the guys who write the code are not the guys who use and test the software and the issue is in communication between those 2 groups. Thank goodness Cubase itself is so amazing (along with your tutorials and Dom Sigalis and Chris Selim), otherwise I’d have ditched Steinberg stuff a long time ago 🙄. Thanks for pointing out these land mines revealed in this video! 🙏
Thanks very much for the feedback, I appreciate it!
love the toilet paper rolls keeping the monitor up in the thumbnail XD .. thanks again for these precious vids
Yeah I get that quite a bit :) (They are actually white painted wooden logs, but I wouldn't want to spoil the joke!)
That was an excellent explanation of such a complex tool! Thank you so much for your bravery and kindness for bringing this to us all!
You're very welcome, I'm glad you found it useful!
Many thanks for this. I hope Steinberg is watching!
We can hope, eh? :)
Thank you very much for these comprehensive explanations. Also somehow I get ASMR from watching this and listening to you.
Thanks, and eeeww at the same time ;)
@@OneManAndHisSongs Had to look up "eeeww" in a dictionary.
you're a very strange fellow indeed....totally loving the discourse on GA5....equally the style..complaining is so underrated....looking forward to completing the series...
Thanks, I think ;)
Amazing demo series, completely demystified groove-agent and a majority of it's nasty quirks. Thank you mate!
Steinberg should listen to you and fix all these bugs you've highlighted for their next version of GA - Seriously! The browser is nasty work!
Really appreciate the feedback, thank you! Fingers crossed for GA6 :)
Great series and thanks for making this. Groove Agent engineers did a rush job not greying out instruments for non-beat-agent Libs.
You're welcome! Yes, they really did. There should be MUCH clearer delineation between Acoustic kits and Beat kits.
dang dude, you help me realize how much fire power here in cubase love it. so many helpful aspects
You're very welcome, thanks for the feedback :)
Thank you for the effort you put into this tutorial series. Going trough this on my own would have driven me crazy!
You're very welcome!
Fantastic tutorial (as are all in this series you created). Thank you
That's very kind of you to say, I really appreciate it :)
Excellent and comprehensively clear about a topic which could easily be a slick sales job for Steinberg or a long rant. This will undoubtedly be useful for me with groove agent. Many thanks
Thank you, that's a great compliment
Truly excellent and informative tutorials. Thanks so much!
You're very welcome, thanks for the kind feedback!
I’ve watched this video at least 3 times, starts to make sense. Thanks for explaining so well !
Lol, I know what you mean :) It feels like codebreaking, sometimes, figuring out how Groove Agent works!
Excellent. It's opened up more possibiities for me. Cheers Anthony.
Awesome knowledge, worth a million quid ! I had no idea about this. Going follow same steps as in the videos, and start learning :)
Thanks for the support, I really appreciate it! I hope you enjoy the rest of the series.
An excellent set of G/A videos, so pleased I came across them, well done you. Many thanks for posting.
You're very welcome, thanks for the feedback :)
Good video, Anthony, thank you. I'm sure GA was designed by a team of developers who a) didn't speak to each other and b) didn't have any design skills :-) If you don't want to maintain a spreadsheet, a workaround for selecting kits from only Beat Agent or Acoustic Agent content sets is to choose the content set from the Instrument tab (only Beat Agent sets are listed) or from the Styles tab (only Acoustic and Percussion sets are listed) and then select the Kits tab to see the included kits.
Nice! I'd never thought of that, but yes, it works :)
I agree - they really need to hop over to Roland and spend a couple of weeks taking notes...
Thank You
great tutorial!
Thank you!
Thank you so so much sir.
You're welcome, thanks for the feedback :)
At around 0:50 you were saying there is no way to tell which kit is acoustic agent and which is beat agent but when you were hovering over them the popup help text says which it is. It would be nice if there was some easier way to see it without hovering.
Enjoying your channel. Thanks for all your great work.
Ahh, foiled by the old "secret popup info" ploy, classic Steinberg ;)
Thanks for the info!
You can click some times on style row to only show presets for that instrument. Feels like it dont react otherwise.
Good work sir keep it up ❤️❤️❤️ love from pakistan 🇵🇰
Much appreciated, thank you :)
Good Series, thank you! For some reason my GA5 won't preview the styles or instruments., i have to drag them on a pad and click the pad to hear it. The info box at the bottom is always blank, below that i've toggled pre-listen in place, yellow volume slider up, but it never previews from the browser, little play button does nothing, but the main GA5 play button works and makes sounds with patterns, as does Cubase PLAY of course. If i go to the Browser tab to my generic pool of sorted one shot samples ,it works as expected, however when i go back to instrument or styles tab, the play button at the bottom still previews the same sample i have selected in the browser tab
I think this video will fix your problem: ruclips.net/video/pWlHULQdXes/видео.html
very helpful :-) thamks a lot
Glad it was helpful!
WHY did Steinberg have to make their drum module so damn confusing? I see all kinds of improvements---perhaps by Beat Agent 10!
Great tutorial! Has anyone come across the following problem? If I choose the instrument tab it still shows the same information as the Kits tab. Tried allsorts to no avail. Anyone got a fix for this?
No, that's very weird. Send me a screenshot to anthony@onemanandhissongs.com and I'll try to see anything obvious
Great tutorial, really really helpful and thank you for your time you have spent for this!
Somehow my "prelisten in place" and my play button in the load panel don't seem to work...they have no effect at all - does anyone has an idea??
On the other hand I dont get it why there is no auto play in this browser...why can't I simply click on the files and listen to them as in the media bay? Or am I doing something wrong??
You're very welcome! I don't know why your load panel features aren't working properly, sorry. My first suggestion would be to post your issue on the Steinberg forums. There's a dedicated one for GA issues: forums.steinberg.net/c/virtual-instruments/groove-agent/39
hi great video just don't get why have 4 instruments on the same instance of groove agent when you could just have 4 single instances of groove agent loaded on 4 different tracks in cubase (or other daw) and make things a lot easier..is there any benefits? thanks
Nope, that's why I use separate tracks. (It's easier on your CPU to have a single instance, if that's an issue for you.)
Hi and thanks for the great tutorials! One thing I couldn't figger out yet and thats this: when I open a Kit with patterns in Groove Agent I see Main Patterns and a few Fills on the pads. Not all the fills. Only the fills in the Pads I can drag to the arrangerfield. I can’t drag the other fills to a pad.
Is there way to get the other fills on a pad too so I can drag them to the arrangerfield?
The Pad Names are just that: names. If you drag (for example) Fill 5 onto the pad called Fill 1, and rename it to Fill 5, it's now Fill 5, in BOTH name and sound. Simple as that! Those names that come out of the box are just a "starter pack". You can reconfigure them however you like.
Now I get it, thank you very much!!
By the way, awesome looking guitar tutor. I’m actually ukulele/banjolele player (wannabe). Can I learn ukulele using your guitar tutor ? Thanks heaps, Ronnie
Thanks!
Kind-of. I never anticipated it being used for that purpose, so the fewest number of frets you can go to is 18. Other than that you can configure a 4-stringed instrument with the nut tunings set to whatever you want. It will even remember your config once you've set it, so you don't have to reset it each time.
The next time I code an update I'll reduce the fret count to 12. It's a trivial change to make. If you want to ping me a mail at anthony@onemanandhissongs.com I'll let you know you once it's done.
How do I get quickly from browsing styles to populating all the pattern pads?
It depends what you intend to populate the pads with. The only way to load all the pattern pads from within a program is to actually load the program: the style itself is simply the "container" for all those separate patterns. So, if you're browsing styles, you're (by definition) not browsing programs. They're really two different views of the the rhythm, so you pick which one best suits your needs.
@@OneManAndHisSongs I'm thinking basically loading styles(or patterns) without changing the kit. But I realize it's doable by manually copying an configuring each pattern pad. Unless there's a faster way?
What folder should the kits be located in? What’s the filepath?
Run the Steinberg Library Manager app, and click the Groove Agent tab. Each kit will have its own location. (You can set defaults, and move files around using this manager.) Click the details button for the kit in question and you'll see the path and filename.
Thank you so much! Quite possibly the least intuitive thing ever and now I am getting to grips with it. Why Steinberg made it this difficult I just don't know.
Sadly, I agree. In fact GA is currently misbehaving for me - I can't prelisten in place for any of my drum sounds, which is a large part of my workflow. As I sometimes say when playing Magic the Gathering - Sadness on the stack... sadness resolves.

Hi Anthony. Your tutorials not just about GA5 and HALion 6 but about Cubase in general are the best by far but I guess that goes without saying by now. Thank you for taking time and making them so detailed and beginner friendly. I got absolute 5 about week ago and following this vid. I realised my prelisten
also doesn't work. Did you manage to to find solution for that problem? It is so depressing.. Best regards
🤩
I don't get it. I understood some VST but this one seems too hard for me. I'll save the money.
prelisten function doesn't work for me
try this solution: ruclips.net/video/pWlHULQdXes/видео.html
Groove Agent 'update' (f*ck-update?) 5.2.10.32 features individually tailored Setup Results Columns for each of Kits, Instruments, Styles, MIDI tabs but, apparently, *NOTHING* for the Browser tab.
That bit in parenthesis is solid gold. Only a GA user would truly understand...
#Steinberg #GrooveAgent 5 is a mess, why they never fixed it? Seems like a great app otherwise but so buggy and confusing.
This is not easy at all.
I agree. GA is a tough nut.
