As a native Washingtonian and a former tour guide. Night tours are awesome. You never know what you may see, especially at the Washington monument. I saw many a performance
Thank you for this comment. We are visiting DC next week. What sites do you recommend for night tour? I am doing self-tour with my two children. Thanks in advance!
My great-grandfather was on the police force here in washington the night of lincoln's assassination. He went all over town trying to warn people that something might happen. How he figured it out, nobody seems to know. It's certainly not recorded anyplace. But there was so much publicity about it that people never forgot him. He became chief of police, then a councilman, did some wheeling and dealing in land, and became a millionaire.
As someone who is visiting during the summer from the humid desert sw, DC feels great! Don't be afraid, the weather is quite pleasant compared to the humid desert. Wonderful place to visit.
Thanks for the video! I feel like DC is an underrated city in the United States; I don't understand how it's not more popular. So many interesting sites, entertainment choices, and wonderful restaurants. It's definitely a city that should be on a lot more people's radar
I strongly recommend attending Performances at the Kennedy Center. Take the Metro train to Foggy Bottom and there's a free red shuttle that will take you directly there. They usually have free daily show at 6pm. Reserve online or go to will call to request free tickets.
For your first Segway ride, I recommend spending the extra money to do a guided Segway tour. 1. They know where to go, the really good places. 2. They will show you in actual situations what you can do, can't do, should do, and shouldn't do. It's more effective than just being told those at a rental checkout counter. 3. You have an employee for support in case you have operational issues or problems. For example our guide took us to where "Deep Throat" would secretly meet; took our picture by the Capitol pond with our camera, etc.
It was great to watch your video on DC. We were there in May & did a lot of what you spoke about. We went to Dupont Circle do dinner one night & went on the Metro. We did go on the very long subway escalator. We also did the Air & Space Museum & Washington Monument. We took the Circulator and di the Capitol Building tour. It is a great city. We only just scratched the surface. I would love to go back again. We tried Potbelly’s for linch & did the Ford Theatre tour. We also took the Amtrack train from Union Station to New York. 😊
The entire DMV has reliable public transportation including the Gaylor/MGM via King Street(bus) or King's Street waterfront via water taxi. The only places that may have limited public transportation is in extremely affluent areas Glen Echo, MD or McLean.
I remember when I was 20 years old. I was going on a school trip to Washington DC. When I told my youngest brother Jeremiah about it, he said, "Oh wow! You're so lucky!" Washington DC was fun, although I had to do lots and lots of walking.
I currently have a trip planned to D.C in mid October. Staying at the Intercontinental Willard - have you stayed here? How is it? I have a Pentaton, White House, and Capitol tour scheduled. Anything else I just get ahead of time you know of? Is the White House tour worth it? So much to do! So many options. Excellent video and I appreciate it very much.
Cool.. I have not stayed there. But that's as great as a location as it gets. Also look in to reservations for the Air and Space Museum and the Smithsonian Zoo if you want to do those. Enjoy your trip!
Wow I’m truly amused by your commentary of travel tour guide to Washington D.C. I love how you analyze in-depth the history of Washington D.C & (DMV) area. I really appreciate/enjoyed your insight facts surrounding District of Columbia (DC), and all the nice hot tipster location to explore DMV area!
Born and work in DC. Nice job. we have a beautiful city. Recommend cocktail at the rooftop bar at W, eats at the Old Ebbitt Grill. Be careful at Union Station.
We were in DC earlier this week and stayed at the Mayflower. We tried your recommendations around Dupont Circle and liked all of them. Thanks for the tips! We loved Moby Dick’s and would have missed it if you hadn’t recommended it!
You can take a water taxi from DC waterfront directly to National Harbor MD for about 25 bucks round trip. Good way to sneak in a side trip on your visit. I use it when I dont want to battle the traffic.
Planning our first trip traveling from Florida in mid February and I'm so grateful for your video! Super informative. I took a ton of notes. Thank you!

I've been to DC a few times, but I still need to visit some of the other neighborhoods one of these days as well as check out the museums. From DC and have lived here all my life. No one here calls it the DMV (that's a weird internet thing or something that transplants adopt). Fall is an amazing time to visit here. If you want to save a bit of money on hotels and want better food to eat, I always tell people to stay in MoCo or Arlington. The best restaurants in this area are NOT in the city but rather in the 'burbs. As long as you stay near a Metro and are in MoCo or Alexandria/Arlington/Roslyn you are fine. DO NOT be tempted to save money by staying in a cheap hotel in Southeast. I know people who did this and regretted it. Finally (and I cannot emphasize this enough) BE AWARE OF CRIME. A few clarifications, corrections, and updates from a DC local: -If you call the airport "Reagan," we'll know you're not from here. Locals either call it "National" or "DCA." -The longest escalator is actually at Wheaton; and, it is the longest escalator in the entire western hemisphere. -The Circulator busses are, unfortunately, being completely phased out by the end of 2024, although, MetroBus is supposed to be stepping in to replace at least some of the routes that they don't currently cover. -While the weather here tends not to be as extreme as many other places can get, we do get almost any kind of weather that can be found anywhere in the country. (Yes, DC gets tornadoes.) One thing to particularly watch out for in the winter are ice storms/freezing rain, which can make walking around pretty hazardous. (Also, expect the weather to, more often than not, be just wrong for whatever you expect to be seasonal.) -On the topic of food, I think it's pretty much malpractice to not point out that the DC area is pretty much the best place in the entire US to get ethiopian food. There's a huge ethiopian immigrant community around here; and, consequently a good number of restaurants. -Be aware that a number of the Smithsonian museums, though free, do timed ticketing for crowd control. Check the websites for information. -The Smithsonian Metro station is actually on Silver, Blue, and Orange, not Yellow. If you want to get to the mall on Yellow or Green, your best bet is the Archives/Navy Memorial station. And the closest the Red line gets is Judiciary Square. -I tend to think it's worth doing the full walk around the tidal basin and checking out all of the memorials around there (the FDR is my personal favorite). Doubly so if you're here in cherry blossom season. -The Congressional office buildings are open to the public (though you will have to go through security); and, every office has staffers whose job it is to speak with constituents who come by. Making the effort to stop in at the office is a pretty good way to get your opinions on issues noticed. (And, please push your representatives to support DC statehood. The way things work right now, we get no representation in Congress; but, Congress has the power to directly overrule anything our local government - the people we actually get to vote for - do.)
Rosslyn is pretty tall, but actually the longest escalator on the metro system is Wheaton station on the red line, in fact it's the longest escalator in the western hemisphere
Unfortunately at this time, Summer is the only time my family and I can go. I live in SoCal so we're kinda used to the heat (just not East Coast heat). still I hope it's not too bad.
Chris, thanks for another great video. I learned a lot, though I have been to DC many times. The Smithsonian Castle is also currently closed for renovation. Rob, from Trip Hacks DC, said the pandas at the National Zoo may be returning to China at some point. Thanks again.
"Three US zoos currently host giant pandas: the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington DC has three, the Memphis Zoo in Tennessee has one and Zoo Atlanta in Georgia has four. Somebody should open a pay toilet area around the mall where you said they don't have a lot of toilets. I would pay a buck or 2 to have a nice clean toilet. I have used pay toilets in Europe.
Yes. It's convenient to the National Mall.. but you'll find the area right around this hotel to be pretty dead at night and on the weekends as it's mostly business travelers that stay in this area. But as long as you know that. It's all good
I didn't go into the White House because no one was allowed to enter the house. There are hotels around Washington and I took Amtrak to Washington from New York City. I had a brief trip to Washington D.C. I went around in the summer during no school activities.
i was in a special tour group to the Capitol Building in the 70s' and we got to go on the floor of the House of Representatives and sit in the chairs. A few people got to sit in the Speaker's chair.
Awesome video, but the weather section is not one hundred percent. It gets really hot and humid during the summer (regularly over 90 and a couple stretches over 100) and the winter does get really cold but not often snowy. Fall and spring are gorgeous though.
FYI: The Circulator bus system will be phased out in 2025. In the summer bring your own water. There are no water fountains in DC. On the 4th of July you don’t want to be on the Mall at night. The show is great. The time to get off the Mall is insane.

I spoke too soon! Well done!
I love Bens!
Foggy bottom has a really long escalator
It sure does too!
Very informative ❤
Glad it was helpful!
Great video!
Go to Frederick MD sometime 😅
Thanks edmonda!
Do you give tours on a private basis?
Hi Yuval.. unfortunately no
good video ...from Washington native
FYI: The Circulator bus system will be phased out in 2025. In the summer bring your own water. There are no water fountains in DC. On the 4th of July you don’t want to be on the Mall at night. The show is great. The time to get off the Mall is insane.
Thanks for the heads up
4:00 that should be iad instead of aid
Doh!
