All against the Four Pawns Attack

  • The four pawns attack (FPA) is the most thematic and aggressive answer to the King's Indian Defence. In this lecture we shall see a slighty offbeat approach to catch some FPA players off-guard and try to gain the upper hand.
Our repertoire is based on the move 6...e5! Which seems like loosing a pawn on the stop (infact it does!) but there is much more to it than what meets the eye! Go Watch! Go Learn!

23:48 after Bf4 I don't think Nc6 is a good move because white can return the pawn with e5-e6! and follow with Bxc7 and white remains a pawn up and black's development is not as pretty as usual. So maybe instead of ...Nc6 there should be ...Nc5 instead, followed by say Re8, Bg4 and Nc6, maybe even playing Ne6 (the point of Nc5).
But aside from that this is an excellent video with not a lot of blabbering and it's a really good presentation and the variations are really solid. Not to mention the video has some good humor too :D Best of luck and Happy Checkmating! :)

Agreed! 10...Nc5 seems to be a better move (intending ...Re8 and pressuring the doubled isolani). My initial reaction as I have mentioned in another comment was to play 11...Bxc3+12.bxc3 Nc5 13.exf7+ Kxf7 14.Bxc7 Re8; the pawn on e4 is looking shaky. The only decent way to keep it would be 15.e5 after which both 15…Kg7 and 15…Bf5 seem to hold.
But why go for this when 10...Nc5 looks better. I will also pin this comment so others can find this suggestion too. Thanks and Cheers!

Very interesting, it seems like the 4 pawns opening isn't great, but I'll give it a shot on a couple of games

Hey, this was great! I play the 4 pawns with both white and black and I never knew about that awsome knight pin at e4. Even d4 openings show how weak the e4 move is ;-).
Btw, can I not castle and pin your knight in that last possition?

What happens if, in the final variation, white plays e6, hitting the c7 pawn? Doesn’t he just stay a pawn up? (25:07) and what do you play after 0-0-0? The position seems terrible for Black! (PS I should’ve added that I loved the video up to this point.)

Interesting recommendations BUT I must disagree. I believe the position you are mentioning is still playable for black.
Allow me to demonstrate- The position mentioned arises at 23:53- here you are recommending two options; 11.0-0-0 and 11.e6 - Fortunately for black; none of them cause any damage.
After 11.e6 we first chop the Knight on c3 (with check!) to further ruin the already ruined pawn structure; and after the very forcing sequence of 11…Bxc3+ 12.bxc3 Nc5 13.exf7+ Kxf7 14.Bxc7 Re8; the pawn on e4 is looking shaky. The only decent way to keep it would be 15.e5 after which both 15…Kg7 and 15…Bf5 seem to hold. Also interesting but inferior would by 15…Bg4 (intending …Bxf3 followed by ...Nxe5.
Finally after your 2nd recommendation 11.0-0-0 we can play 11…Nc5!? Allowing 12.Rxd8+ Nxd8; the knight on d8 will now reroute itself to e6 after which the e4&e5 pawns would be blockaded and the position very much playable for black. Also after say 12.Nd5!? simply 12…Nxe4 should neutralize any fancy ideas white may have.
      Hope this helps. Cheers!

Sicilian Paramour I still think the position you end with is pretty ugly, especially for people who like to play the King’s Indian. White also has 11. Nd5. In pretty well all of the lines given, Stockfish gives white around about a 1 pawn advantage. That, of course, doesn’t mean in practice the position is bad, but the position does seem uncomfortable to me - certainly not one I would enjoy playing. I wouldn’t say there are huge chances of winning. So maybe here we have just go for a more traditional c5, b5 kind of line agains the four pawns which remains sharp with chances for both sides. A pity, because all of the other lines were great for black.

Well that is a judgement based on perspective and not objectivity. Someone like me would find playing against those doubled and isolated pawns like a pretty straight-forward plan. I am not denying that white might have an initial pull but it doesn't seem like much. Just like one player may like defending the poisoned pawn variation in the Najdorf as black while someone else might enjoy playing against it.
All that is left is for me to wish you luck playing either side of the 6...e5!? variation. All the best Jeremy!

Sicilian Paramour Thanks for your thoughts and time and also the video. I appreciate that :) Still don’t want to play black in these positions, but I guess everything is a matter of taste.

At 11:48, when the knight in f3 and the bishop in d3 are forked, instead of Re1, can white play Nd2, discovering a rook attack on the queen? After ... Qh4 I think white could at least trade bishop and knight for rook and pawn. How bad would be black's threat to f2 (after Rf8 for example)?
