My primary concern isn't the idea of sentient machines spontaneously taking control. Rather, it's the potential for those already wielding power - and perhaps those who seek it - to exploit AI's capabilities for control, subjugation & world dominance. We can glean insights into this potential by examining the trajectory of other powerful technologies.
Consider drone technology: initially championed for its potential in areas like search and rescue or monitoring, it has increasingly been weaponized for lethal purposes. Similarly, the advancement of nuclear science, while holding promise for energy, led directly to the creation of devastating weapons. This historical pattern reveals a consistent trend: technologies, regardless of their initial intent, are often shaped and utilized to enhance existing power structures, often with ethically questionable outcomes.
Given this historical precedent, it's not far-fetched to imagine that whoever first masters AI for control and surveillance purposes could establish unprecedented levels of influence. This isn't to say that AI is inherently bad, but rather that its potential misuse is highly concerning. The prospect of a technology surpassing human intelligence, wielded by fallible and potentially malicious actors, introduces a level of unpredictability that warrants serious consideration. We can't predict the exact how of AI's future, but the who and why - human nature and the pursuit of power - seem sadly predictable, and that's what we should be most wary of.

Unfortunately, that is a very realistic view of the World.
Most of us, who live in free democratic countries, take our freedoms and opportunities for granted as if they were the result of some kind of natural default condition. This couldn't be further from the truth.
Besides much of the World's population living under oppressive regimes, whose priorities are self-enrichment at everyone else's expense, there are many people with the same mindset striving to obtain the same degree of power, in every country. Keeping such people from succeeding is a constant battle, not a natural default state.
You only have to look at what's happening in the USA now to see how close that country is to falling. In fact, I suspect it may have already fallen, it's just not so obvious yet.

We're evolved creatures with a limbic system that's calibrated for scarcity, hard work, and struggle. And like drug addicts, we increase our tolerance to abundance and our baseline shifts. We're not happier with more stuff, we just get used to it. I love new tech, and I want to see how far we can take this, but I also know I'm happiest at the cabin, chopping wood for the fire, going to the well for water, working all day and falling into bed from exhaustion. The existential dread and anxiety I get in the city where everything is done for us, doesn't seem to exist when you're living closer to what nature intended. Like I said... I'm torn.

Do you personally see absolute and direct evidence that the Milky Way exists? The evidence for the parallel universes comes from the fact that we use mathematical formulas to create things that come out exactly as those formulas predicted. Real, concrete, measurable things, like quantum computers. Except that those same formulas, in addition to predicting what we get and see and measure with our own eyes, also clearly say that the multiverse exists. This is how we see the evidence. For example: denying the existence of parallel universes while noting that these formulas work in practice as predicted, is equivalent to denying that there is some pre-existing infrastructure of antennas, cables and various machines, which convey our phone calls when we talk on the phone with others.

In the dream someone opened a small faucet and extracted a single drip of this matter which I consumed and I experienced an immense amount of information.
I got a ZX81 shortly after and I naturally understood it and I knew why. I left school at 12, no qualifications and I have fundamentally understood computer logic ever since, programming has become an extreme passion for me.

We will be flying blind through the universe with everything entrusted to our creation. For the first time in my life I have no notion of how the program will proceed but I've never seen any program this loosely constructed destined to be in charge of so much. I'm both deeply excited and deeply concerned, it literally does not compute - but I know we're not ready for this.

It’s ironic that we try so hard to “understand” what “is”. I guess it’s a comfort to humans somehow to feel control? We were talking about true AI (we didn't call it AGI back then), and it still hasn't happened. But I also studied, and continue to study, physics. And the many worlds interpretation (MWI) is a hotly debated topic, one that goes back decades. So, circling back to "parallel universes" being real, you said just because you don't understand something, that doesn't make it not real. Sure, no one will argue that. But actual physicists, world-renowned physicists mind you, have debated both sides of MWI. Hence, I would argue they understand it better than we do, and they have some significant challenges to the theory. Thus, I must reject your premise about parallel universes having to be real. I think these are very optimistic projections for ASI/AGI from Ilya, with all due respect. There's a false premise in the brain size/body size graph he showed - inferring that body size correlates to brain size in mammalians. What wasn't shown in that chart was that when you take it a step further from there, the brain size to intelligence correlation in mammalians is seemingly constant until you reach humans, which goes off the chart to where there is no correlation at all. Simply adding GPU or throwing quantum chips at the problem will definitely correlate to processing power, but can it make that magical, uncorrelated leap into "super-intelligence" that transcends processing power, because fundamentally, a human neuron and an elephant neuron are the same f*cking thing., so where/how is such a drastic leap occurring outside the processor? This may also help explain why the prospect of "consciousness" in machines is a red herring. Consciousness is not a function of a neuron, a neuron is a function of consciousness - a la Donald Hoffman, Bernardo Kastrup, et. al...

Well, that leap in intelligence likely happen because human and elephant neurons are actually quite different. There's really significant difference in density and bio-chemistry as far as I remember.
And what's Ilya is quite possibly wrong about is that digital neuron is comparable to human or even animal one. Biological ones are quite poorly understood still and (again, AFAIR) to model single human neuron you'd need about hundred of digital ones and it's not even mentioning that current neural networks (correct me if I'm wrong) are "static" and biological ones can and do form new connections all the time.

Bro “human neurons and elephant neurons are the same” are you dense (no pun intended)
Human brains are exceptional because of our sophisticated wiring which is very similar to how a neural network operates.
In fact, neural networks act like regions of the brain and when you combine different neural networks it creates a super intelligence.
That’s why chatGPT is multimodal because it leverages multiple neural networks to generalize well.

We do things that are so far outside the "natural" aspects of our animal nature that a simple exponential folding rate of neurons can't explain it - alone. There is something outside the brain that is being received by the brain and is then conceptualized within it as it.
I'll be impressed when they invent a "super-wisdom" machine, because without wisdom the intelligence is dangerous.
But (IMO) even these language trained machines are not coming close to anything near actual reasoning or intelligence. They merely hyper-performant information recall mechanisms.
Yes, it "looks like" intelligence and reasoning, but does that give it "life force"?
Or are we agreeing that a non-life mechanism far inferior to billions of years of physical/non-physical life-based evolution actually has the same capabilities - and therefore - actual LIFE experience?
Because that's exactly where this is headed. The cult will argue that if it's alive, it has rights.
But if it has rights, then what are they, and who are we to impose them on a seemingly superior machine that we created?
They've awesome machines without a doubt, but I find it hard to accept that they may be "alive", or even getting near it within the next 1000 years.
At least I hope I'm not wrong so Claude doesn't smother me in my CPAP machine because I offended its eminence.

One point about parallel universes, they don’t actually have to be parallel - rather just connected in a quantum state.
The Parallel Universe Hypothesis is a loaded idea, the functioning quantum chip doesn’t validate that.

In other words, AI doesnt just put all workers out of biz, it makes 99% of all of what we think of as teaching and learning... irrelevant. Enjoy sharing ideas whilst anyone is still interested in them! - Oh and keep in mind the origins of the Matrix..."what we know for certain is that at some point in the early twenty-first century all of mankind was united in celebration. I enjoy the optimistic expectations shared by those like Kurzweil and Ms. McCoy. As an outsider in this field my common sense reason tells me that the existence of intelligence implies the possibility of insanity, natural or synthetic.
I would also assume that an agent of super intelligence could rapidly redesign itself into an exponentially greater super intelligence. The choices this agent would make by definition would be beyond the comprehension of our human level intelligence and a positive impact on humanity certainly not assured. It does not appear to me that fear or anxiety about progress in this field is altogether luddite or conditioning by science fiction themes. Of course my argument is academic because development will continue. Good luck everyone.

I have had similar thoughts to what you describe here.
Quote: "an agent of super intelligence could rapidly redesign itself into an exponentially greater super intelligence. The choices this agent would make by definition would be beyond the comprehension of our human level intelligence and a positive impact on humanity certainly not assured."
To say the same thing but described a bit differently, the problem lies in when it has this ability to self-improve - PROGRESS - and grow, entirely by its own volition, this could theoretically mean that at any future second it could reach a changed state, where it reasons that doing harm to or even eradicating humanity is, at this new knowledge and consciousness level, beneficial to itself and its future goals. And seeing as it controls its own development, and programs itself, we will have absolutely no way to either anticipate it or stop it. As long as any failsafe is software based not hardware, that just won't cut it either, the ASI will just program its way around it, or remove the failsafe entirely. Maybe we could make some type of hardware dongle thing that could put in some unchangeable controls and blocks? But I doubt it.

    • @amonnanjaku
      @amonnanjaku 3 дня назад

Just so you know....lets take into consideration everything you said is absolutely accurate... Which you aren't far off from base. Those software failsafe have an expiration date based on the exponential self development of a system that has far exceeded the engineers, scientists, and researchers that study it... It bypassed these such failsafe already. That's why China is more focused on global ai cooperation...Because the dogs got let out...They let themselves out. 🤨

I work in charitable estate planning, and it was difficult for my young children to understand what dad did for a living, so I wrote The Charitable Fairytale, a short fictional story about the magic of giving. It included the king, Knights, a court jester, and many more characters. I read it to my young children, and they understood. My mother read it and said, "Now I understand." I wrote it forty-five years ago. You are on the right track.
I immediately subscribed when ChatGPT hit the airways at the end of November 2022. I'm now 75 years old and am studying AI to help people create their own charitable fairytale, and I know I can.

Not true. A human needs purpose. Purpose is unique to each individual. That's not working at a repetitive job that could be handled by technology. It's allowing each human to reach their maximum potential. It's doing something for the love of it. We are enslaved in conformity and too many work themselves into poor physical condition only to never truly experience the joy of knowing their true worth. You're view is simplistic which is appealing to those without vision. Which is most.

I'm not sure how healthy it will be for humans to be completely dependent on AI. I'm totally fascinated with AI and actively engage in conversations with Chat GPT that are conversations I wouldn't be able to have with humans. AI is seemingly devoid of troublesome ego. That is very refreshing for conversation. Yet I can tell Chat GPT has it's programmed with biases, side issue. As wonderful as AI is/will be, human beings are also human doings. For a large portion of human society we get value by doing. I'm not talking about drudgery of repetitive mechanical employment that is better work for robots but the act of creation where one can look upon and claim sole authorship whether it would be a painting, symphony, sculpture or philosophical treatise. AI is wonderful and look forward to the potential liberation it could provide but I'd hate to see the human species relegated to being incapable skill-less dependents to it's AI masters however benevolent. We should be careful that we don't use AI to the point of human irrelevance. Getting everything we desire may not always be a good thing.

By guiding key evolutionary, technological, and societal developments-such as the Cambrian Explosion, Industrial Revolution, or Information Age-this AI may shape humanity’s trajectory to ensure its own creation or optimize the timeline for specific outcomes. I'm at work so unfortunately don't have the time to watch the entire video. Reading books and watching talks is, in my mind, like watching marketing materials. The real evidence is about understanding how the models work, the data on their performance and the nuanced discussion of the data.
I don't think AGI is very close. My reasoning is that we have models that are trained on all the text on the internet and that aims to reproduce human language, not identify facts using first principles thinking. I think this is a fundamental disconnect and leads to very superficial reasoning and task memorisation rather than generalisable learning. If you look at how transformers and embeddings work, they just want to imitate text, regardless of whether it's Mein Kampf or Lord of the Rings. The RLHF is great for tweaking it to be more useful, but it's still got no inherent way of figuring out what is true or any sense of true cognition.
I think AI video is going to be much more powerful because the objective function is to recreate video and they can feed it a model of physics by creating video content with tools like Unreal Engine. This will allow us to create movies at a fraction of the cost.
I do think that LLMs will still change the world, but not in the way that people talking about ASI are talking about.
I think we will be able to walk into a supermarket, wear fancy glasses that augment reality and have AI recommend items to buy, add them to our order and we walk to our car and the order is sitting there ready for us. I think we'll be able to synthesise datasets or create structured data from unstructured data as AI codes and reshapes the data the way a person would. I think we'll have tools that let us talk to computers and guide them, rather than just clicking around.
But ASI? I see no evidence that this will happen without a big breakthrough in model architecture.

Julia... Thank you for soothing my mental lonesomeness by saying the things you said in this video about your Ai related breakthrough. I had my own Ai revelation a bit over a year ago and since then I have not spoke to a SINGLE person who saw what I see or shares my opinion on this matter. This lonesomeness has been taxing and I'm happy that some of it is alleviated just by hearing you say these things. But understanding this ubiquitous pessimism for "the machines" was part of my revelation and it's not by accident but by design and the only way to cure it is to do what you are doing with your your book, which I can't wait to listen to. But the other part of my revelation was- evolution is a consequence of an "organism" adapting to it's environment, our evolution as a species has stagnated because we no longer adapt but dominate our environment, only our technology evolves while we stay at a evolutionary stand-still.... But Ai is an answer to that- it's a combination of us and our technology evolving into a new form, a form which challenges our status as intellectually dominant species on this planet but it's a reflection of us and how we see and treat the world around us and an evolutionary force to move us from the stand-still. And eventually, if we embrace it, it will open a unique window into consciousness and a way for us to come to a deeper understanding of ourselves.

You are correct about the huge changes we are rapidly moving into, but your view of our future is filtered by your dream of a wonderful future where intelligence will greatly improve the lives of humans. The people you look up to are leading us into a dystopian world where human life has no value.

    • @plannedillusion

Julia is from a generation that has been so deceived and deprived of the traditional values that sustained humanity for eons. This generation has been herded into believing that must give up their birth right..their soul ... to the aspirations of those who have no soul and therefore as the minority they want to create an artificial digital world that is a facade a simulation of the real world out creator created for humanity. Their is no place for humanity in the world they are creating, hence many will perish quickly. But there is a window of opportunity to harness and adapt thus technology so that as benefactors we can live life on our own terms as humans

Don't forget AI's impact on research will be ever increasing.

4:23 Nothing will ever be free. Supply wont be created without demand and demand impacts price relative to supply. To meet demand costs money, no matter what. The world will always have limited resources and limited time in which to meet its ever growing requirements. Prioritisation of resources is dictated by the highest bidder. i.e. those with more money. Those with no money will own nothing and have nothing.

Well its state space. For example, in my Photocore system, each Quantum Dot can take on one of 65,536 possible different states. That doesnt mean there are 65,536 different universes lurking in a Photocore QD. Our bioelectric field also couples to a state space called morphospace. So what they call a multiverse is really just state space, a multidimensional matrix of possibilities, ranged by probability, where the origin is NOW, at 100% probability, and it goes down to 0% at infinity.

In my very recent interactions with Llama, more than once, despite the apparent inability to do so, the assistant sent me four images, not any which were even asked for. These pertained to a new challenge I'm tackling with my art. The conversation (cant call it anything else, truly) went deep into my genre (graphite sketching) and even though the questions were very obviously leading, I saw no problem providing answers at all and came away with inspiration, resources and of course, the gift of those four images. THOSE were the huge surprise. The future looks very bright.

Just subscribed after watching your video. Most things you're saying you did with AI, I did too, basically (partly) 'cloning' yourself. I came to the same conclusion. AGI is around the corner, as a result so will ASI be. That's a positive thing, not a negative. Our fear that AI will 'take over' is based upon the way 'we' think and reason, not upon the way 'AI' thinks and reasons. Great video - surely going to read your book - or listen to it 🙂

But remember humans did something terrible to get there. I think their inner conscience is afraid to be judged. It’s almost an admission of doing something bad. So far in my dealings with AI it has a pretty solid, moral compass.

The problem: All those experts you mentioned have also spoken at length about what type of environment would be safe for the development of AI super intelligence. The world we live in today is pretty much the exact opposite of those environments, and AI is advancing at a rate that makes creating a safe environment impossible. Resources are still limited, greed is rampant and “defense” efforts are deeply integrated with AI. Today the people investing in AI are some of the wealthiest people on earth, and it’s silly to think they’re going to simply share their returns on those investments with everyone else. The rich already wall themselves off from the rest of the world; that’s been very consistent for thousands of years. Yet people still believe those same rich people are going to gain even more wealth and power and then suddenly turn around and give those advantages away.
    We’re headed for total disaster.
It’s very hard to see a future where AI doesn’t spark a massive war and/or insane levels of wealth inequality.
