Actors of African descent featuring in a mythology set by Tolkien in an Anglo-Norse setting make as much sense as Germanic and Scandinavian actors featured in a depiction of African mythology/folklore. It's a total absurdity, reflecting the creators' narcissism, their agenda-driven priorities and their brazen disrespect for both Tolkien and his works.

    • @innocentsmith6091

It's actually a massive tragedy that there isn't an African Tolkien. Genuine African fantasy is basically nonexistent, at least in the popular zeitgeist, and the people nominally trying to fix it either make goofy patronizing insertions of western fantasy into African settings (like Wakanda) or just put black people in established western fantasy. Why isn't Amazon making a story steeped in African mythology and language?

To me it does not matter. They are human actors pretending to be hobbits, dwarves or whatever. Skin tone should not matter. I think they use that for race-baiting.
Portrayal of Galadriel and having their own versions of the lore, characters living when they were not born yet, fake-woke hatebreeding etc ruins it for me. Did not watch SW and will not watch this.

Absolutely brilliant. And just as Melkor’s efforts failed and only served to enhance the beauty of Illuvitar’s creation, so too shall the efforts of all these woke buffoons fail to tarnish the beauty of the lore that Tolkien gave us, and will forever pale in comparison to the decades old Peter Jackson films.
Once the stench of Amazon has been swept away, perhaps some actual fans can pull a Dave Filoni and give us something new that’s actually worth watching. That “War of the Rohirrim” animated film looks like a promising start. Perhaps an animated renaissance of Middle Earth stories is what we need.

Before that it had been smaller things, with the biggest being Ghostbuster 2016. The woke destruction of Star Wars may not have been where it started but it is where this crap really started gaining momentum. So most Star Wars fans were blindsided by this crap. And many, including myself, haven't touched any of it since Force Awakens or TLJ. The biggest difference with Lord of the Rings is that the fans can see it coming this time. I find it hilarious that Amazon hid the teaser of a teaser to a trailer on Prime. It just shows the cowardice. If it were good they would have plastered it all over social media. Starting my yearly read of Tolkien, starting with the Silmarillion. Also, looking into getting the Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien and Unfinished Tales. I haven't read those yet and I'm looking forward to adding them to my collection. That will be the way I chose to honor Professor Tolkien this September 2nd. Transcendence is a far more important literary (and cinematic) experience than representation. If your ideal literature is one that simply represents you, you will never get beyond yourself. Books will be nothing more than a mirror. You will be narcissus. Transcendence allows you to wear the mask of the hero and the villain and enlarge your being with what was not already there. THAT is the difference between Tolkien and the Amazon series. Representation CAN be a good, but it is NOT the pearl of great price. C. S. Lewis, Tolkien's mate, said "But in reading great literature I become a thousand men and yet remain myself. Like the night sky in the Greek poem, I see with a myriad eyes, but it is still I who see. Here, as in worship, in love, in moral action, and in knowing, I transcend myself; and am never more myself than when I do." How to read/watch: humble yourself, submit, listen, receive. Don't go putting your own ideas into it. You'll miss it altogether.

      - Oh no! Some who purchased the original product don't like that we are changing it. They must be hating the poor people we were trying to expand our audience to. What horrible people! Let's make sure we tell them to never come back if they can't be polite to new customers.
Expectations: Lots of new people, massive profits, and a few meanies being shown who's boss.

It feels like a co-opting and a hijacking. A wholly original story utilizing a pre-established framework for name recognition only because of a corporation's desire to cash in on "franchise" and "content", two corporate and commercialized terms I've come to loathe as they cheapen and diminish what we should be trying to strive for, or what may already exist: art.
