This setting may win the prize for the dumbest factory preset in the history of printers! Thanks for the super easy solution to cancel the Deep Sleep Mode!
Before I watched this video I was about to throw the printer in the garbage. It was so frustrating. I would turn it on, print one document, then have to turn it off and turn it back on again to print the next one. This video fixed the problem! Thank you
Works great on the HL-L2400DW in 2023. I don't know what Brother was thinking making that the default setting, and having it go into Deep Sleep in such a short time no less, but you came to the rescue, so MANY THANKS for that!
Mr Genius, you saved me many hours I'm sure! I do have a different model though, the DCP-l2550DW. I followed your steps and did not QUITE get there, as it is of course a different model. However after a little trial and error, I tried down&stop, instead of down&back, and viola! It works! Hopefully adding this will help some other poor sap who has the same model I do. Cheers
Thanks, I have been struggling with this for years and usually unplug and plug in again... secret menu's are NOT nice!! I appreciate you sharing the information
In newer models (mine is 3230CDW) that has a "Cancel" button, the method in the video does not work. However, if you "Cancel" (rather than "Back") + "Down Arrow", it works fine!
Oh by the heavens thank you!! This was what I needed. For me I went up to 2 minutes pressed and held down (which went back to 1 minute) then pressed cancel and the Deep Sleep menu came up. Pressing at the same time kept registering cancel for me.
This video was very helpful because it informed me of the secret menu, so I pressed a couple of different buttons on my Brother HL-L3290CDW, and it ended up being the STOP/EXIT and the Down ( - ) buttons at the same time. Hope this helps!
Perfect! No long intro, just a simple to follow hack that cleared up my print problems. Why in the world the Brother “instructions” to resolve this deep sleep issue tells you the DS mode cannot be disabled is beyond me-why do5hey care f I use a tiny bit more power??
I have the HL-L3290CDW, and for this model it is the minus sign (-) key and Stop/Exit that you must press simultaneously. But never would have figured it out without this video! It is beyond comprehension why hardware manufacturers hide stuff like this. This setting not only was inconvenient, but I believe it was causing disconnects between my mac and the printer that couldn't be resolved just by hitting the power button!
I have the same printer as you have and I have to open the 2 doors and lift the scanner before I can do the unplugging and holding the power button down to get it to turn on....unfortunately I have to do these steps again the next time I want to use the printer, it seems that overnight something happens that stops it coming on without those start up steps.
HL-L2390DW - to get to the "secret deep sleep menu" follow the directions but press the down arrow & Stop/Exit button Thanks for this video. Problem solved.
Thanks, I would never have figured that out. I just don't print that often and the stupid printer kept going into deep sleep. Once again you prove that if you need to figure out how to fix anything, it's on RUclips. 😀
Worked on the Brother HL-2370DW! Thanks. Nice straight forward instructions. I have another brother and will turn off the deep sleep mode and sleep mode on that one as well! Good Job!!
THANK YOU!!! Deep sleep mode is so frustrating as you highlighted. Took 30 seconds to fix once I saw your video. No way I would have figured this out without your video. Awesome!!
Thanks man. I was getting pretty frustrated with this printer. Your video was the first to come up and I just followed along with your steps and now all is good. Thank you.
I was glad to get rid of my HP printer just to be met with this issue on my new Brother printer. I just hate printers in general. Thanks for your video.
Thank you for this. Unfortuntely I seem to have a different problem . Did your fix . But now printer just sits in sleep mode directly after switching on. It says ready then just goes to sleep . Any help would be ace !
Probably the best thing I ever found on YT I hate effing printers was going out of my mind re adding the wifi password on the dumb tiny panel , you are a great man thank you 😂🙏🏻🏆
Thank you for this. Incredibly stupid of them to have buried this in a secret menu item like that. Was getting frustrated trying to find a way to disable that until stumbling on this video.
Isn't it great how the IT guy at my mum's work can't do this even when asked but me finding this straight to the point video solved the issue in like ten minutes XD thanks for this, that bloody deep sleep mode has been nothing but a pain in the ass!
Thank you.👍👏👏 This video is much a marriage saver. I am waiting for my hubby to solve this for "Deep sleep" for about a month. Apparently, he is in hibernation mode when comes to fixing things in the house. 🤣
Ooooohhhh thank you! I have just followed your steps. If this works, I'll be so grateful. Incredibly frustrating feature that constantly makes my devices think the printer is offline. I've tried everything from restarting printer, restarting computer, re-connecting to wifi, all of it to nurse the printer out of its sleep. So annoying! (I do think that here in the UK it's about not using energy when not using a device, but it just doesn't work!).
Thank you-this video is helpful to turn off Deep Sleep mode but Deep Sleep was not my problem. After reading comments below, I tried printing from Google Docs and printer worked fine. What I had to do with the document that was not printing was email it to myself and print from my Google Drive. With technology, there are always multiple ways to solve the problem which can be fun. Guess you just have to figure out which way works best for you!
Thank you for this deep sleep was driving me crazy!, I have a HL-L22370DW and when I got to the part where the minutes were showing, I had to down arrow to 0 and hit OK, and that stopped it! Thanks again!
Yes! Thank you for this video! "Deep Sleep Mode" needs be killed - are you listening Brother Printers? My previous beloved Brother printer was great; plugged it in, connected and worked great for years. I pick up this one for massive kid printing and it is a big ol' piece of burnt toast, mind-f-ing waste of time getting out of deep sleep. Thank you thecollegepicker for making the easiest, quickest fix to forever get rid of this torturous feature. Thank you RUclips for hosting this educational video! Brother Printers, you dropped the ball, man. Listen to this channel and regain your supporters. Kill this stupid, stupid glitchy "deep sleep" mode. Thanks again thecollegepicker. So glad to find your video!
I hate the deep sleep "feature". What Jack-A thought that would be a good idea then, HIDE the shut off for it?!!🤨 This is the third time I've had to reference your video. Every time it resets from moving or power outage I have to re-watch your video. It's so obscure, it is easily forgotten. Thank you and I wish I could give you more up votes. You deserve more for this tutorial.
After your great video setting up this laser printer ( 1st one and shocked it had no keypad to work menu ) I did get my network connect. ( the harder way ). But after selecting printer on my MAC... printing was easy as WiFi light is always on even when "Deep Sleep" mode . I use Apple Air Print and works on IPAD and IPHONE great. I was so frustrated at first but your videos got me through it and with patience I got connected. I never used a FAX never Photo Copied of Scanned and never needed color so this monochrome laser fit my needs and no dealing with expensive fussy ink. Scanning gets done on APPS now. Hope did not jinx myself.
This was driving me crazy! There is even a video by Brother USA that states specifically that Deep Sleep cannot be turned off. Ridiculous! What is the point of a wireless printer that turns its wireless off. Crazy! Thank you so much for making this video, I now have a working printer!
Thanks for this trick! I'm not a fan of Brother printers myself. I have some on my office, which my IT manager picked (I'm also on the IT team), and they are some of the most problematic printers I've ever had to support.
This was helpful. My 2340DW goes into deep sleep and sometimes I can't wake it up trying to print from PC or AirPrint. Hopefully, disabling Deep Sleep solves this problem.
The jerks who write the official troubleshooting for Brother would rather you spin your wheels than tell you how to turn off this setting. THANK YOU! I have a HL2370DW, but the secret menu was right where you said it would be. This isn't a wireless only issue - mine is wired and it couldn't wake from deep sleep.
Thank you! I could get my iPhone to print but not my computer due to deep sleep. I don't know why the iPhone can wake the printer up but the computer couldn't. Thank you for the secret menu!
Great video, thanks. My HL3150CDW started going to Deep Sleep recently. The method in the video doesn't work however using down and cancel buttons opens the deep sleep on/off option. Now to suss out why it still wont print from my laptop after a router upgrade. Technology eh?
hi - loved the help, but this printer did not allow me to choose down & Back at the same time to bring up DEEP SLEEEP I was only able to change 0 MIN of Sleep? I will be curious if DEEP SLEEP will still show up?
Thanks. My family paid $220 for this printer and I can't find any documentation on how to turn off sleep. Unfortunately your video didn't solve my problem, so I am going to return it.

I had that same printer and could have used this!! I ended up hardwiring the dang thing. Now I have a newer model and it doesn't have the Back button. The sleep time was 0 - goes up to 50. Do you know what to do with the newer models ?
Thank you! Four years later, and we still need this tutorial.
This setting may win the prize for the dumbest factory preset in the history of printers! Thanks for the super easy solution to cancel the Deep Sleep Mode!
Lol 😆

Again, dumb guys there! It's so annoing after spending money for a good printer....
My printer said "Sleep/' after all these steps, but 2 minutes later started printing. Crazy!!!! Thank you sir!!!
People like you keep the world turning and the rest of us sane! Thankyou 👍
Mr Genius, you saved me many hours I'm sure! I do have a different model though, the DCP-l2550DW. I followed your steps and did not QUITE get there, as it is of course a different model. Setting up printer now and didn’t know that you need to physically wake up printer from deep sleep. You saved me lots of future frustration
Oh it's an awful feature. You would have been so confused.
The normale would be that it woke up when you try print some but NOOOOOO so easy can it not be!
This advice is still paying dividends to users! Thanks for this video!
I have spent hours trying to fix this problem. It's a ridiculous setting. Thank you, Sir.
Thanks, I have been struggling with this for years and usually unplug and plug in again... secret menu's are NOT nice!! I appreciate you sharing the information

You are my hero, thanks. Cant believe I have to use RUclips and a comment to figure this out. Thanks, Brother.
This worked for HL-3140CW
This worked for brother dcp l2550dw turn off sleep mode! Thank you, finally found the solution to a problem that's been bugging me for months.
Thank you! I have a MFC-L2717DW. The video wasn't working and I was running through combos as I saw your comment.
Worked for the HL-3170CDW
Not all heroes wear capes! Thank you so much for that little bit of sanity you helped me snatch back.
You are welcome. God bless you 🙏🏻

Thanks for this video. Problem solved.
I have the same printer, so thank you for the specific info. I was able to turn off deep sleep and I can print any time now.
Thanks, I would never have figured that out. I just don't print that often and the stupid printer kept going into deep sleep. Once again you prove that if you need to figure out how to fix anything, it's on RUclips. 😀
Thank you soooooooooo much! Your instructions were clear and concise. I followed the directions and achieved success the first attempt!
Awesome!!

Awesome. Thanks to commenters who found and Down/Stop combination. worked for me.
I was glad to get rid of my HP printer just to be met with this issue on my new Brother printer. I just hate printers in general. Thanks for your video.
literally just went through the exact same journey. was so excited to get a printer from a "better company", why do they all have to suck
I am having the same problem, i hate them also.
@@barrygioportmorien1 did you fix it? I was able to finally get mine working reliably
@@jmc042 No, I am not very tech savvy, I will wait until my son can assist me.

Mine too. Deep Sleep has been disabled, but now it still says Sleep and it's not printing.
Me too

Thank you so much! That problem had been annoying me for a couple of years.
It was annoying until I found this solution. Great job my friend. Thanks
🤝 you are welcome
In 2024, and this still works! Thank you SOOOOOOO much!!!!
Eric helped me tremendously! Used three of his tutorials, all of them were fantastic...!!!
Opps ....just saw your note. Pushed Down and Stop/Exit together and it worker perfectly. Thanks
This is exactly what I needed! Clear instructions and easy to follow. Thanks!
You're welcome!
OMG I love you! 2 years of misery and you solved it in seconds! I hear the sound of printing!!!🎉❤
after fighting this for an hour...I found your RUclips channel. Thanks for the fix!!!
You are welcome
Note: on my DCP-L2550DW, the secret menu was obtained by pressing STOP and DOWN at the same time.
Anyway, it was great help, thank you.
Thanks for adding that Antoine 🙏
Thanks Brother ! I was going to dump my printer !! You saved his life and mine !!
Thanks so much for the solve. Hidden unwanted features like this drive me mad!

Thank you for your help. Problem solved with your very clear instructions. You have done a lot of people a great service.

Many thanks.Brother ought to employ you as an 'adviser'.Well done.
Thanks for the helpful tip! Now is there a way to turn off the regular "Sleep Mode" on this printer?
So glad you made this video. This was driving me crazy.
Wow, what a GREAT piece of information. Unfortunately, I had spent a couple of hours before stumbling across it! Great work.
Helpful. Short and to the point! Thank you. It fixed a perplexing issue I have been having.
This video just saved me from having to chuck my printer through a window. Thank you!
Lol you are welcome
Amazing, was so annoying for last two years now fixed, thank you!

I have been frustrated since September by this feature! Thank you for the solution!!!
Didn't work for me. It says sleep mode is off but it still won't work and says "sleep." I will NEVER buy another Brother printer. This is ridiculous.
100% why is sleep mode even an option for a printer lol
Did work for me as well😢
It’s making me insane!!!!
Dude thank you, still works on the upgraded version of this printer!
Thanks so much for this. It's quick and easy. It's crazy that Canon has a secret menu. Who would have known if you hadn't told us?
You are welcome. It's nuts right 😆
Wow... It is a super annoying setting and they really don't want us to know about it... Thanks!

Was printing fine. Now won’t wake up even though deep sleep is off. Think this is getting returned. So disappointed in brother.

You're a lifesaver. My printer kept entering deep sleep almost automatically. Even when I turned auto sleep to off.
This helped a lot! When we first got our printer, it didn’t go into deep sleep, but I’m pretty sure my 2-year-old brother activated it somehow.
Oh good glad it helped ☺️
This was helpful. My 2340DW goes into deep sleep and sometimes I can't wake it up trying to print from PC or AirPrint. Hopefully, disabling Deep Sleep solves this problem.

Thank you!!☀️ Such a relieve 😅 it drove me crazy
Thank you soooo much. You made it simple and u deruta cable. Quick fix. I’m super grateful.
I bow humbly in your general direction, sir!
Lol thx
Yup. You deserve the thumbs up.
Much easier than our previous solution which was to restart the computer to get it to reconnect to the printer.
I never would have found THAT on my own. Thanks.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! For the sake of "the environment" I was ready to smash this printer to bits.
Thank you! What a fking problem this should never have been a default setting let alone not in the pamphlet you get. Lifesaver!
100%. You are right 😂
Thank you so much! Worked for my 2400DWE
Great video, thanks. My HL3150CDW started going to Deep Sleep recently. The method in the video doesn't work however using down and cancel buttons opens the deep sleep on/off option.

Thanks, this worked perfectly on a L2340DW.
you just changed my life

On Brother MFC-L2710DW it was Stop/Exit and Down buttons TOGETHER to get to the Deep Menu options.
Secret combo 🙌 thanks for adding that model for everyone to see 🙏🙏
Thanks for this. I’ll set it up right away
You have just saved me a world of grief!
Thank you sir
Thank you! Awful that I had to dig to figure this out, but appreciate that I found your video.
You are welcome

simple and to the point perfect - thanks!

I had that same printer and could have used this!! I ended up hardwiring the dang thing. Now I have a newer model and it doesn't have the Back button. The sleep time was 0 - goes up to 50. Do you know what to do with the newer models ?
I can't seem to use this method on my new HLL2390DW. Any thoughts?
Thank you! You are the most amazing being on the planet!
